In one study that examined the diets of 1,300 elderly persons in Massachusetts, those who had at least one serving of carrots and/or squash each day had a 60 percent reduction in their risk of heart attacks compared to those who ate less than one serving of these carotenoid-rich Foods per day. High carotene intake has been linked with a 20 percent decrease in postmenopausal breast cancer and up to a 50 percent decrease in the incidence of cancers of the bladder, cervix, prostate, colon, larynx, and esophagus.
While moderate consumption of meat and animal products may be health-promoting, there is no question that overconsumption of these Foods is spurring a global epidemic of lifestyle diseases, such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancers, as well as creating new pressures on land and water resources, contributing to water pollution, and exacerbating global warming. 596 World meat production has surged nearly sixfold since 1950, and per capita meat production stands at 36 kilograms, more than double the 1950 level.
For years the FDA refused to even consider a ban on sulfites, even while admitting that these agents provoked attacks in an unknown number of people and in 5 to 10 percent of asthma victims. It was not until 1985, when sulfite sensitivity was linked to fifteen deaths between 1983 and 1985, that the FDA agreed to review the matter. In 1986, the FDA finally banned the use of sulfites on produce and required labeling of other Foods, such as wine, beer, and dried fruit, that have had sulfites added.

LJ Many studies have found a link between asthma attacks, which may be immediate or delayed, and food allergies. In children, Foods that are most likely to trigger immediate attacks are eggs, fish, shellfish, nuts, and peanuts. Foods most commonly associated with delayed attacks include milk, chocolate, wheat, citrus, and food colorings. (For more information, see Food Allergies under ALLERGIES in Part Two.) —J Hypochlorhydria, or deficient production of gastric acid in the stomach, has been linked to asthma in both children and adults, as well as to a higher incidence of allergies.
Taken as a preventive, it can also reduce the frequency of vomiting with migraine attacks. LJ Avoid Foods containing the amino acid tyramine. These include anchovies, beer, hard cheeses, chocolate, corned beef, dried meats, fava beans, fermented beans such as miso and soy sauce, lima beans, pickled herring, red wine (white wine can be used in moderation), sardines, sauerkraut, and yeast. Although a single serving of a tyramine-containing food such as chocolate may not provoke a migraine, excessive consumption of these Foods can increase the frequency of attacks.

Although a single serving of a tyramine-containing food such as chocolate may not provoke a migraine, excessive consumption of these Foods can increase the frequency of attacks. LJ Avoid bingeing on sweets or starches. The temporary "sugar buzz" is followed by hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which is a well-known trigger of migraine attacks. LJ Eliminate coffee and other sources of caffeine from the diet. Once you are off caffeine, you can use coffee as a treatment for migraine. Drink one or two cups of strong coffee at the first sign of an attack; then lie down in a dark, quiet room.
People who tend to suffer panic attacks, however, are unable to convert lactate into pyruvic acid, and so have elevated blood levels of lactate. Stress and reactions to certain Foods or drugs also can trigger anxiety. Other factors that can cause or contribute to anxiety include fatigue, nutritional deficiencies, malfunctions in brain chemistry, headaches, surges in adrenaline, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Using recreational drugs, including marijuana, can cause panic attacks. Conventional medicine uses both drug treatments and psychotherapy to treat anxiety.

Once gallstones have developed, measures to avoid gallbladder attacks and increase the solubility of the bile are necessary. To limit the incidence of symptoms, allergenic Foods must be determined (see Food Allergies) and, along with fatty Foods, avoided. The solubility of the bile can be increased by following the dietary guidelines and utilizing the nutritional and herbal supplements recommended below. Diet Increase intake of vegetables, fruits, and dietary fiber, especially the gel-forming or mucilaginous fibers (flaxseed, oat bran, guar gum, pectin, etc.).
For years, the FDA refused to even consider a ban on sulfites, even while admitting that these agents provoked attacks in an unknown number of people and in five to ten percent of asthma sufferers. QUICK REVIEW • Recurrent attacks of boils can indicate a depressed immune system. • Tea tree oil is an effective topical treatment of boils. • If the boil is severe or does not resolve within two to three days, a physician should be consulted immediately. TREATMENT SUMMARY Eliminate from the diet any Foods that may suppress immune function (sugar, refined simple carbohydrates, and food allergens).
This explains why alcohol consumption is often a trigger in acute attacks of gout. Elimination of alcohol is all that is needed to reduce uric acid levels and prevent gouty arthritis in many individuals.2-4 Low-Purine Diet A low-purine diet has long been the mainstay of dietary therapy for gout. However, with the advent of potent drugs that lower uric acid levels, many physicians choose to simply write out a prescription rather than educate the patient how to control the gout by dietary measures. Foods with high purine levels should be entirely omitted.
Foods such as chocolate, cheese, beer, and wine precipitate migraine attacks in many people because they contain platelets of migraine patients. However, the quantity of serotonin released by the platelets of the migraine patient in response to serotonin stimulation (such as a food allergy), while initially normal, becomes progressively higher until a migraine is produced.6 The platelet hypothesis is strengthened by the observation that patients with classic migraine have a twofold increase in incidence of mitral valve prolapse.' Mitral valve prolapse refers to a "leaky" heart valve.
Dietary Amines Foods such as chocolate, cheese, beer, and wine precipitate migraine attacks in many people. This is because they contain histamine and/or other compounds that can trigger migraines in sensitive individuals by causing blood vessels to expand.30-32 Red wine is much more likely than white wine to cause a headache because it contains twenty to two hundred times as much histamine and because it stimulates the release of vasoactive compounds by platelets.8'29,33 Red wine is also much higher in flavonoids—the antioxidant components shown to help prevent heart disease.

People who suffer this type of depression in the winter months lose their energy, suffer anxiety attacks, gain weight as a result of craving the wrong Foods, sleep too much, and have a reduced sex drive. Many people get depressed around the December holidays. While most of them probably just have the "holiday blues," some of them may be suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Suicides also seem to be highest during this time of year. Foods greatly influence the brain's behavior. A poor diet, especially one with a lot of junk Foods, is a common cause of depression.
The attacks themselves are very unpredictable; some people experience one every few weeks, while others may have several a day. They are often triggered by stress (conscious or unconscious) or certain emotions, but may also occur in response to certain Foods, drugs, or illness. Food allergies and hypoglycemia are both common among people with this disorder, and can promote panic attacks. An attack may follow ingestion or overindulgence in caffeine-based stimulants such as tea or coffee. Some attacks occur with no apparent cause.
Allergies may be linked to some heart attacks. When a reaction in the walls of the arteries triggers a spasm in the coronary arteries, a heart attack may result. Allergies can also cause a temporarily rapid pulse. Your pulse rate may increase after you eat certain Foods or when you come into contact with particular allergens. Allergy testing is recommended to determine whether you react to certain Foods or other allergens. (See allergies in Part Two.
During severe attacks, use liquid vitamin supplements for better assimilation and put all vegetables and fruits through a blender. Eat steamed vegetables only. Baby Foods are good until healing is complete. Earth's Best produces organically grown baby Foods that are available in health food stores and some supermarkets. Add supplemental fiber to the baby food. As healing progresses, gradually add raw fruits and vegetables to the diet. Drink carrot juice, cabbage juice, and "green drinks." Or take chlorophyll liquid or liquid alfalfa in juice.
Keep a food diary to detect correlations between your attacks and the Foods you eat. Food allergies and sensitivities may trigger panic or anxiety attacks. (See allergies in Part Two.) Q Learn relaxation techniques. Biofeedback and meditation can be very helpful. Q Get regular exercise. Any type of exercise will work—a brisk walk, bicycle riding, swimming, aerobics, or whatever fits your individual lifestyle. After a few weeks of regular exercise, most people notice an improvement in anxiety symptoms. Q Be sure to get adequate rest.
Panic attacks are usually abrupt and intense. They can occur at any time of the day or night, lasting from several seconds up to half an hour. To the panic sufferer, it often feels as though they are much longer. A person having a panic attack often believes that he or she is experiencing a heart attack or a stroke. The attacks themselves are very unpredictable; some people experience one every few weeks, while others may have several a day. They are often triggered by stress (conscious or unconscious) or certain emotions, but may also occur in response to certain Foods, drugs, or illness.

But, he says, use alternative home remedies as well, along with a corrective diet to prevent future attacks. HIGH-PURINE FOODS: A Must to Avoid One way to control uric acid levels is to avoid eating too many Foods rich in purine, a protein-related substance that the body turns into uric acid. "If you avoid high-purine Foods, gout attacks won't be as common," says Dr. Aesoph, "and when they occur, they won't be as severe.
One caution: This technique is so effective that you may be tempted not to bother with trying to prevent gout attacks. That would be a big mistake, says Dr. Holder, because the disease would still progress, slowly but surely destroying your joints. If you have a gout attack, use this technique.
If you avoid high-purine Foods, gout attacks won't be as common," says Dr. Aesoph, "and when they occur, they won't be as severe." The Foods highest in purine include organ meats such as liver, kidney, and sweetbreads; fish such as sardines, mackerel, and anchovies; vegetables such as asparagus and mushrooms; and beans of any kind. ALCOHOL: Pull the Trigger Alcohol of all types, including beer, wine, and liquor, triggers the body to produce uric acid. To control gout, you must avoid alcohol, says Dr. Holder.
In some people, dairy Foods may cause other, more serious problems, such as gallbladder attacks, irritable bowel syndrome, and even ulcers. Since many of the symptoms of lactose intolerance and dairy sensitivity can mimic symptoms of serious illnesses, you should see your doctor to find out what's going on. Lactose intolerance can often be diagnosed in the office with a simple test called a hydrogen breath test. In addition, your doctor may give you a blood test for delayed milk allergy to see if you're reacting to something else in milk besides the lactose.
He got his asthma under control using nutritional supplements, whole Foods, herbs, exercise, and breathing and mind-body techniques, as well as by avoiding allergens that could trigger attacks. Then he began to offer his alternative program (some of which is described in this chapter) to his asthma patients, a group that now numbers in the thousands. Doctor, what Should I Eat?: Nutrition Prescriptions for Ailments in Which Diet Can Really Make a Difference

Isadore Rosenfeld, M.D.
See book keywords and concepts
ANXIETY, PANIC ATTACKS, AND FOOD ANGST-FREE FOODS Anxiety and panic attacks are an appropriate human response to danger. If you're on a plane and the pilot announces that there is a serious engine malfunction and the possibility of a crash landing, you should be anxious! If your job is in jeopardy, anxiety or panic is also understandable. But when the threat ends, so should the emotional response to it. Feelings of panic and anxiety that continue indefinitely for no apparent reason are not "normal" behavior.
Although it's important to avoid Foods that provoke asthma, you should also know what to eat to help prevent attacks. For years, natives in Mexico and South America have been eating chili peppers to improve sexual performance, decrease lung congestion, and relieve pain. Really hot chilis consumed regularly (a raw pepper contains 110 milligrams of vitamin C and only 18 calories) will reduce the frequency and severity of your asthmatic attacks; so will drinking a glass of water containing ten to twenty drops of Tabasco sauce, a chili concentrate.
Migraine runs in families; if you suffer from it, there's an even chance that one or more of your blood relatives do too. Attacks occur as often as every few days or not for months and they can be triggered by a variety of factors. The most common culprit is stress, but precipi-tants include a change in the weather or a drop in barometric pressure; hunger; fatigue; alcohol (particularly red wine); caffeine; nicotine; certain foods; bright lights; loud noises; specific odors; and sleeping either too much or too little.
That raises the blood uric acid level and increases the frequency of attacks. In fact, gout is one of the major complications of the more drastic liquid-protein and other weight-reduction diets. Instead of purine-rich Foods, focus on complex carbohydrates such as pasta, rice, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables; go easy on the fat (20 to 25 percent of total calories); and eat protein in moderation (20 percent of your total caloric intake). Drink plenty of fluids to increase the normal urinary excretion of uric acid.
You can reduce the frequency of the attacks by eliminating alcohol and tobacco, and some people improve after reducing their caffeine intake. Caffeine is naturally present in coffee, tea, chocolate, and cocoa. It is often added to soda (but not seltzer), nonprescription cold remedies, painkillers, and antacids. So always check the label and select those products without added caffeine. The table on page 45 lists common Foods that contain caffeine and that can worsen your symptoms of Meniere's.
The rub is that some patients "break through" the preventive-medication regimen and continue to have acute attacks. In such cases, diet is important. If your gout is drug resistant, so that you must be careful about what you eat and drink, keep away from Foods that are rich in purines and that raise your uric acid level.

Eat Right, Live Longer: Using the Natural Power of Foods to Age-Proof Your Body

Neal Barnard, M.D.

You can protect your cell membranes against damaging free radical attacks if your diet contains generous amounts of Foods from four sources: vegetables, fruits, grains (such as breads, cereals, pasta, rice, oats, or corn), and legumes (beans, peas, and lentils). These Foods sound very humble and if your diet contains only modest amounts of them, they will not do very much for you. But in more generous amounts, their power reveals itself. They hold natural compounds that actually wedge themselves in the cell membrane and protect it, while other nutrients guard the bloodstream.
Certain nutrients can shield your cells from these attacks, not only in your skin, but in all parts of your body. I am not referring to nutrient supplements from a health food store. The protectors you need are in Foods that are probably already in your cupboard or refrigerator or can easily be found at any grocery store. The key is to learn how to use them. They give you enormous power. But that is only the first step. The next step is to turn on natural enzymes in your body that strengthen your defenses against environmental pollutants that would age you.

Burkitt thought "softage" would be a better name for fiber, because it keeps the stool moist, soft, and easy to eliminate. Appendicitis.
