The amount of uv radiation reaching the surface is primarily related to the elevation of the sun in the sky, the amount of ozone in the stratosphere, and the amount of clouds present. The UV index can range from 0 (nighttime) to 15 or 16 (in the tropics at high elevations under clear skies). uv radiation is greatest when the sun is highest in the sky and rapidly decreases as the sun approaches the horizon. The higher the UV index, the greater the dose rate of skin-damaging (and eye-damaging) uv radiation. Consequently, the higher the UV index, the less time it takes before skin damage occurs. |

All of our LED lights produce no uv radiation or IR radiation, making them perfect for use in museums, hospitals, offices or areas where uv radiation might degrade the surroundings (such as illuminating valuable artwork or photographs). The fact that they run remarkably cool also means they greatly reduce the fire hazard normally associated with the use of lights.
LED lights will make incandescent and fluorescent lights obsolete
I will offer a prediction right here: LED lights will render both incandescent light bulbs AND compact fluorescent lights obsolete. |

The majority of skin cancer, which originates from the Major Ager of uv radiation (see more on how uv radiation damages our skin and eyes on page 252), comes in the form of basal cell or squamous cell cancers. Related to excessive sun exposure (which is why most of us will never get them on our buttocks), these cancers are rarely fatal and can be simply removed as long as you catch them early. The other kind of cancer, melanoma, is related to sunburns, as opposed to long-term exposure, and it's much more dangerous. |

This research was conducted to detect the frequency of uv radiation that causes sunburn. uv radiation had dropped an average of 0.7 percent per year over the period from 1974 to 1985 and continued to do so afterwards.
The fact that the number of skin cancers in the United States had doubled within this period of 11 years contradicts the theory that UV light is the reason behind the skin cancer epidemic. The number of malignant skin cancers (melanomas) discovered in 1980 in the United States was 8,000, and eight years later it had increased by 350 percent to 28,000. |
| For every 100 feet of elevation there is a significant increase in uv radiation. But this does not prevent people from climbing mountains or living in countries like Switzerland or at the high altitudes of the Himalayan Mountains. According to the UV/cancer theory, most Kenyan, Tibetan, or Swiss residents should be afflicted with skin cancer today. Yet this is not the case at all. The fact is that those who reside at high altitudes or near the equator where uv radiation is the most concentrated are virtually free of all cancers, not just skin cancers! |

Here's how the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) explains the UV index:
The annual UV index is a graphical report of the amount of skin-damaging uv radiation expected to reach the earth's surface at the time when the sun is highest in the sky (solar noon). |

The cornea bends, or refracts, the remaining.) uv radiation can cause oxidative stress, which damages vision by clouding our lens and burning through the delicate film and cells of our retina. Prime example: Portland, Oregon, gets a little more than half as much sunlight as Atlanta, and Atlanta eyes have more damage.
The mass of the lens actually triples from the age of twenty to the age of seventy, which you'd think would be a good thing. But it's not. That thicker lens causes us to become more nearsighted (not being able to see far). |

Regulation of Flavonol Biosynthesis
Flavonols play important functions in plants, serving as co-pigments (Forkmann, 1991), as shields from uv radiation (Kootstra, 1994; Ryan et al., 2001) and contributing to male fertility by facilitating pollen germination (Mo et al., 1992; Taylor and Grotewold, 2005; Ylstra et al., 1992). Flavonol formation requires the expression of CHS, CHI, F3H, and FLS, this last gene encoding flavonol synthase, which converts dihydrokaempferol (DHK) or dihydroquercetin (DHQ) to the corresponding flavonols, kaempferol (K) and quercetin (Q), respectively. |
| Activation of this control system is induced by uv radiation (van Tunen et al., 1988; Kubasek et al., 1992; Pelletier et al, 1997), exactly what would be expected if flavonoids evolved originally to provide photoprotection as plants moved onto land. Under this scenario, a second regulatory control system would have been added as additional enzymes were incorporated into the flavonoid pathway, giving rise to the coordinated control over the "late" genes. |

Three studies also showed L-ergothioneine to be a protector of environmental uv radiation damage. Though shiitake and maitake have much more of it, even our friend the lowly white button mushroom has many times more L-ergothioneine than wheat germ and chicken liver, the other two sources of this incredible antioxidant.

One way is through connective-tissue breakdown. uv radiation causes the structural protein of our skin, collagen, to break down and disables our ability to repair damage. Another way sun ages our skin is through the formation of free radicals—those aggressive charged compounds that damage cells and break down collagen as well. Free radicals can cause cancer by changing our DNA and preventing our body from repairing it. How? UV destroys the rungs of the DNA ladder so that the DNA ladder posts bind with one another. This makes a bulge so that the DNA doesn't form—or function—correctly. |

Less well-known and probably more ancient functions of flavonoids include protection against the detrimental effects of UV radiation; mediation of interactions between pollen and stigma; defense against bacteria, pathogenic fungi, and herbivores; mediation of interactions between plants and mutualistic mycorhizzal fungi; and regulators of hormonal activity. Because recent, thorough reviews of these functions are available elsewhere (Koes et al, 1994; Shirley, 1996), they will not be discussed in detail here. |

As you can see, the Major Ager of uv radiation has a big impact on your eyes by oxidizing the pigments in the retina and decreasing the antioxidants in the thin, yellowish film that protects it, meaning that these delicate cells are always at risk of being damaged through another Major Ager, free radicals. That's why nutrition is so important in rebuilding these antioxidant stores over time, especially when you consider that sunlight damage to the eye is cumulative—particularly in conditions like macular degeneration, where the cells die from oxidative damage. |

Smoking or high blood pressure cuts off blood vessels that feed the retina (the nerve tissue that converts signals to the brain) and carry vitamins and antioxidants to the back of the eye to repair damage caused by the Major Ager of uv radiation. While genetics do play a role—those with light-colored irises and high blood pressure and low HDL cholesterol are most at risk—lifestyle choices that keep your arteries young will reduce your chances of developing macular degeneration. |

Even worse, sunscreen blocks the uv radiation that allows the skin to manufacture all-important vitamin D -- the most powerful anti-cancer nutrient yet known to modern science. It prevents over a dozen different cancers, yet parents block it by slathering toxic sunscreen on their children, all while mistakenly believing they're "protecting their children from cancer!" What a scam.

The UV index is not solely a measure of UVB light, but UVB plays the largest role in calculating the UV index. And because the UV index is available in real time throughout the year, it's a useful tool for estimating your capacity to make vitamin D.
To make any vitamin D, you need a UV index of about 3 or greater. |

But since uv radiation is decreasing every year and skin cancers were extremely rare 100 years ago when UV intensity was much higher and people spent much more time outdoors, what other factor could be held responsible for causing skin cancer?
The More UV, the Less Cancer
Even if UV penetration to the surface of the Earth did actually increase by, for example, one percent each year (which is not the case), such slight increases would still be hundreds, if not thousands, of times less than the normal variations which people experience because of differences in geography. |

Katiyar's research series has demonstrated that green tea protects against cancers caused by uv radiation, and that a green tea cream applied prior to exposure to a carcinogen is highly effective in protecting the skin against cancerous changes. Mice in a group that was treated with a green tea cream developed fewer and smaller tumors than did mice that were not administered the cream. Dr. Katiyar also found that green tea extract lessens swelling of the skin and uncontrolled growth of skin cells in mice. |

Several large studies plus a review of all previous studies have shown there is a link between low vitamin D levels and colon cancer. A 50% reduction in colon cancer risk can be achieved by adults who maintain adequate blood levels of vitamin D, but for most adults in North America and Europe this means vitamin supplementation will be required. | Sun-starved females are at great risk for breast cancer, particularly women living in northern latitudes where wintertime sun exposure produces little vitamin D because of a decline in uv radiation in solar light. Dietary supplements are strongly recommended. Warnings that adults can overdose on vitamin D with daily oral doses exceeding 2,000 units are ill founded.
Vitamin D's ability to inhibit breast cancer cell growth is enhanced by resveratrol, a red wine molecule. Resveratrol increases the vitamin D receptor sites on cells which sensitize the cells to vitamin D. |

One of the most important reasons is that uv radiation is necessary for normal cell division. A lack of UV light disturbs normal cell growth, which can lead to cancer, as confirmed by Dr. Shaw's research. The use of sunglasses, including regular UV reflecting spectacles and contact lenses, are co-responsible for certain degenerative eye diseases, such as macular degeneration. Most people who use sunglasses report continuously weakening eyesight. The solution is to this problem is simple: Stop wearing them. You will soon discover that your eyes are getting used to sunlight again. |
| This shows that uv radiation does not cause cancer; in fact, it can even prevent it.
The human body has a unique ability to become accustomed to all kinds of variations in the environment. It is equipped with perfect self-regulating mechanisms that protect it against damage from the natural elements. Overexposure to swimming in the sea or in a lake can lead to extensive skin swelling, shivering, and circulatory problems. Our body will let us know when it is time to get out of the water. Getting too close to a fire will heat us up and encourage us to move away from it. |
