As a side note, Chinese Medicine relies heavily on tongue diagnosis, which is based on the same holistic principles being presented here. The character of the tongue can reveal an extraordinary amount of information about the health of a person's internal organs. tongue diagnosis is extremely advanced, amazingly accurate and is a medical technology that has been developed and improved for nearly 5,000 years. In fact, an experienced Chinese Medicine doctor can tell more from your tongue and pulse than a Western doctor can tell from $10,000 worth of blood tests and an MRI. (No kidding. |

To taste a plant, put a small piece on the tip of your tongue and chew for two to three minutes. Plants have primary actions and secondary actions. By allowing time to taste the plant fully, you will receive a taste on the tip of your tongue that indicates the primary action and a taste on the back of your tongue indicating the secondary action. This ability to recognize the subtle differences in taste may take a while to develop, as our modern diets don't venture far from sweet and salty. The full range of taste also includes sour, bitter, and pungent or spicy. |

Cats eating niacin-deficient diets develop "black tongue" hemorrhagic diarrhea, anemia, and reddening and ulceration of the mucous membranes of the tongue and mouth. If this inadequacy is not corrected, emaciation and death eventually occur. Humans face similar diseases if their diets are vitamin B-3 deficient.
Vitamins-as-Prevention
How did the modern diet become so deficient in certain nutrients that we can no longer scavenge adequate amounts? Food processing would seem to be the chief cause, although depletion of soil nutrients may also be implicated. |

Gymnema components, like gymnemic acid, when applied to the tongue are able to block the sensation of sweetness. Clinically this has shown some significance. People who had gymnema extracts applied to the tongue have been shown to eat fewer calories at a meal compared to people who did not have the gymnema applied. It must be stressed that the gymnema extract was applied to their tongues. They did not swallow it in capsule or tablet form. Obviously this would not produce the same effect.
Gymnema extract appears to work in type 2 diabetes by enhancing the action of insulin. |

I would bite through my tongue. When I would wake up from a seizure my muscles would be sore to the point that I couldn't stand up and my stomach would burn. My whole body would ache and I was completely exhausted and hurt. The recovery period was typically about a week. I couldn't talk because of a swollen tongue due to the biting. I would have this feeling in my head that I can't even describe. It was like my head was underwater and I couldn't think clearly, so I usually slept for the first few days after the seizure. I would feel suicidal for about a week afterwards. |

Obstruction may be caused when the throat muscles and tongue relax during sleep, allowing the tongue and uvula (the small, fleshy tissue hanging from the back of the throat) to sag and block the airway. Excessive tissue in the airways (prevalent among overweight people) and excess swelling and mucus production in the nose (often caused by childhood allergies) can also narrow airways and substantially obstruct breathing during sleep.12 Central sleep apnea, in which the brain fails to signal the respiratory muscles to breathe, is less common. |
| Darren's tongue was flabby and slightly pale with a red tip; he also had scalloped "teeth marks" on the sides of his tongue and his pulses were "slippery." All of these signs indicated that Darren's spleen and stomach were deficient in energy, meaning he was not producing enough blood or digestive power. The deficiency was allowing a condition of "dampness" to build up in his body, causing the energy to stagnate in his liver meridian (one of the 12 principle pathways for the flow of qi through the body), which was creating heat. |

This bilateral energy channel starts at the soles of the feet, flows up the inside of the legs, moves across the abdomen and along the chest, continues to the back of the throat, and ends at the root of the tongue. Inner branching channels run from the main kidney meridian to the root of the tongue and on to the inner ears and brain tissue. Traditionally, there are twenty-seven acupuncture points along the kidney meridian.
There are myriad health-related associations for each of the twelve main meridians and the deeper, inner meridians that branch from them. |

Sublingual (under the tongue) progesterone has basically the same uses for menopause and premenstrual symptoms as the creams and the oral progesterone. However, it is generally stronger than the creams and weaker than the usual oral doses. Typically, the tablets must remain under the tongue for 20 minutes while they dissolve before the progesterone is fully absorbed.
One advantage of sublingual tabletsas well as creams and vaginal and rectal suppositories is that they are not significantly metabolized by the liver, as is the case with oral progesterone. |

It's in your genes' interest for you to eat the sweetest food with the most calories, fust in case you have a different opinion, your genes have a powerful ally in the tip of your tongue, which houses your taste buds. Sugar is so powerful that your whole tongue is oriented to finding it, and your brain is programmed to seek it endlessly, because if it gets in your system fast enough, it goes right to your brain's pleasure center. In the natural world, the only source of concentrated sugar with enough power to elevate your blood sugar level is a lot of fruit. |

Recent studies have found that sublingual (under the tongue) vitamin B12 tablets increase blood levels just as well as injections do. As the sublingual vitamin B12 dissolves, it enters a network of blood vessels located under the tongue. If you are deficient in vitamin B12, however, you may need several hundred times the recommended daily amount to restore normal blood levels of the vitamin. That amount translates to 600 to 1,000 meg of vitamin B12 daily.
Dosage: Take 500 to 1,000 meg daily.

It's sort of like saying, "Well, doctor, my tongue hurts." And the doctor says, "Let's cut out your tongue." In fact, your gall bladder is far more important for digestion than your tongue.
Do everything you can to protect your gall bladder. Along those lines, one of the most important things you need to do is physically massage your internal organs through body movement. A lot of people are surprised to hear this, but your internal organs need to be massaged just like your muscles and skin.
Massage therapy is something that I recommend everyone pursue to enhance his or her health. |

You can also do a prescreen yourself: Every morning, as soon as you wake up and before getting out of bed, put a thermometer under your tongue for three minutes. If your under-the-tongue temperature is less than 98 degrees Fahrenheit, you are likely hypothyroid. Repeat the test every day for two weeks.

On several occasions the ideas with regard to his tongue and lungs being gone have so overmastered him that he has nearly gone into maniacal excitement" (325).

After about six months Carl noted some recovery in the movement of his tongue, and he was able to get up and walk for short distances. I decided to increase the amount of grape-seed extract. He reported back to me that he was now able to get up and down to walk about twenty times each day. His physical therapy also helped, and his overall strength began to improve. The most exciting thing for Carl was the fact that he was able to continue to paint. When he painted, he could forget about the Parkinson's disease, at least for a while. |

Cloves (Eugenia caryophyllus)
SPEAK IN CLOVED tongue Did you know . . . during the Han dynasty, people were required to put a piece of clove in their mouths to hide bad breath before they were allowed to talk to the Emperor?
What's the Story?
Cloves are dried flower buds that come from the Evergreen clove tree. The English word "clove" stems from the Latin word clavus which translates to "nail." Cloves have a sweet, warm flavor and smell. Cloves and clove oil are used in cooking, perfumes, and artificial flavorings.

After Jack developed a series of odd tics, including flicking his tongue over his lips or continuously scrunching up his nose, his parents went to the Internet to look for information on Adderall's side effects (the doctor had not reviewed anything remotely like what Jack was experiencing) but found only that the drug could possibly accentuate preexisting tics. While on vacation his parents stopped giving him the drug to try and get him to eat. |

We often admire a person with a quick, sharp tongue, and sometimes we wish we could say things the way that person does. For example, the comedians Don Rickles and Joan Rivers excel in sarcasm. Yet sarcasm is as sharp as any dagger, and laughing at sarcasm is a little like laughing at someone who tortures kittens. It's a red flag.
Passive-aggressive behavior is another form of anger, although it is subtle and many people can be manipulated by it. Passive-aggressive people are angry because other people don't do what they would like. |

There are also lesser known methods of diagnosing asthma, which must be considered to be of dubious value. ūHair sampling, where hairs from your head are examined under a microscope to make a diagnosis. ūVEGA testing, in which the electrical conductivity in your body is measured by machine. VEGA testing is also used to detect allergies. ūSEC (segmental electrograph) testing: a diagnostic method where segments of the body are stimulated in turn. |

However, these hidden sugars communicate to the tongue and subconscious brain, confusing leptin and driving the compulsion to eat more food than is needed. The only way to get rid of these excess sweet cravings is to rebalance the leptin receptors on the tongue. When this happens, the desire for the taste of sweets is toned down and the cravings disappear.
Individual perception of sweetness varies considerably from person to person. |

As one western commentator observed, in Indian medical thought, 'the soul can (with great difficulty) be extracted from the body, but then so (with much greater ease) may a heart or a tongue'.11
For western healers, these interactions between body and mind, and body and environment, were mediated by the humours. These fluids were produced by the different organs and circulated through the body. Their production was affected by the changing seasons and by the aspect of the planets with which each was associated, as well as by diet and physical or mental actions. |
