The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil Syndrome X There's another term for the diabetes-like "disease" that results from eating too many refined carbohydrates: syndrome x. syndrome x is characterized by elevated levels of insulin in the blood. Here's the link between dietary carbohydrates and syndrome x, as explained in The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine: Syndrome Xis a term used to describe a set of cardiovascular risk factors, including glucose or insulin disturbances, high blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, elevated blood pressure, and android obesity.

Kaylor: Yes, we have a book that's actually focusing on a condition called syndrome x, sometimes known as metabolic syndrome. It's a resistance syndrome that is pre-diabetes. The book has a beautiful pink cover entitled syndrome x and SX-Fraction. It's really just a quick booklet; a quick look at a particular component of the maitake mushroom, which is very useful in helping the body correct the imbalance that has arisen through bad lifestyle choices, bad food choices and abnormally high stress levels. It is also very relevant for diabetes. Mike: Are you the primary author of this book?
We've talked a little bit about cancer and syndrome x, or pre-diabetes. These mushrooms have many other uses in terms of dealing with health challenges aside from that. Just the simple anti-viral properties are legendary in these mushrooms. It helps people overcome viral infections or defend against the common flu. Are there any anti-inflammatory effects that might interest people? Kaylor: Well, I think the whole maitake mushroom has some mild anti-inflammatory effects.
Mike: And then SX-Fraction is for syndrome x? Kaylor: Yes, the SX-Fraction is a different component of the same mushroom, the maitake mushroom. This would be useful for lowering blood sugar levels, lowering insulin levels, lowering blood pressure and lowering triglycerides. It lowers LDL, the so-called "bad" cholesterol. It raises HDL, the so-called "good" cholesterol. And it may even effect the conversion of LDL to BLDL, which is very bad cholesterol, so to speak. So it has some distinct cardiovascular benefits, as well.

In addition to these risk factors, there are two syndromes, both called syndrome x, associated with heart disease risk. The first one was named by Dr. Harvey Kemp of Harvard in 1967 to describe women with normal coronary angiograms who had angina-like chest pain with or without positive treadmill tests.27 Some of these women turned out to have abnormal circulation in the small coronary arteries, and their coronary flow didn't adjust itself appropriately. The second syndrome x, also called Reaven's syndrome or metabolic syndrome,28 was coined in 1988 by Dr. Gerald Reaven of Stanford University.

It is interesting to note that in the year 2005 the most common cause of high blood pressure is a complex relationship of insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome often referred to as syndrome x. Future research may show that coenzyme Qiq can help to neutralize this poorly understood "Syndrome X," which is the major cause of vascular dysfunction, vasoconstriction and eventually high blood pressure, and even type 2 diabetes.

In 1999,1 began writing a book titled syndrome x, which was essentially about prediabetes, yet I was still in denial about having the early stages of syndrome x, a form of prediabetes. At that time, my personal life and relationships were undergoing big changes, and, for some inexplicable reason, I lost my taste for pasta, which had been one of my favorite foods. I started to eat more salads and baked chicken. Over the next three months, I lost twenty pounds without trying, and my body mass index decreased to 23.5, which is within the normal range.

The underlying metabolic denominator in Syndrome Xis elevated insulin levels. There is little doubt about what contributes to these elevations: an elevated intake of refined carbohydrates.

Because syndrome x is a form of prediabetes, it frequently includes mood changes, such as impatience, irritability, anger, hostility, and fuzzy thinking. The ideal solution is not to self-medicate with foods that promote mood swings or heart disease, but rather to reduce or eliminate the source of stress, a topic that I'll address later in this book. In the next chapter, I will explain more about neurotransmitters and will describe some of the nutrients needed to make them.

Diabetic patients and patients with syndrome x need 300 meg of chromium in supplementation. Vitamin E not only improves antioxidant defenses but also seems to help the body in the problem of insulin resistance. Research reveals that a low vitamin E level is an independent and strong predictor for the development of adult-onset diabetes. Individuals who have low levels of vitamin E have a fivefold higher risk of developing diabetes than those with a normal amount of vitamin E.

This manifests most clearly in what the author considers a classical manifestation of how to eat in a way to give you the lowest phenotypic expression of your genes, which is syndrome x. Many doctors have thought that the way to deal with diabetes is just to give insulin, but now we have begun to understand that Type II diabetes doesn't have as much to do with insulin as with insulin insensitivity. This is known as insulin resistance. Syndrome X was first identified by Dr. George Reaven, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Medicine at Stanford University.

Let's take a moment to look at the common cause of syndrome x, the body's developed resistance against insulin. What Is Insulin Resistance? . Americans are infatuated with a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet, although in truth, most Americans eat a high-carbohydrate and high-fat diet. Over the years our diet has taken its toll, and many of us have become less and less sensitive to our own insulin as a result. Insulin is basically a storage hormone that drives sugar into the cell to be utilized or stored as fat. The body desires to control our blood sugars.

For prediabetes, insulin resistance, or syndrome x, take 200 mg once or twice daily to improve insulin function and glucose metabolism. For additional guidelines in blood-sugar disorders, see my book Syndrome X: The Complete Nutritional Program to Prevent and Reverse Insulin Resistance. Alpha-lipoic acid, like any other supplement, will work best when combined with a healthy overall diet. Specifically, a nutrient-dense diet, rich in lean, high-quality protein (fish and chicken) and vegetables will help moderate spikes in blood sugar and insulin.

If you are in a health predicament like Joe's, you can achieve a similar outcome with the same commitment to lifestyle and eating adjustments. syndrome x and its deadly ramifications can be beat. Now let's turn our attention to the progressed development of diabetes and how to reverse its devastating effect on our bodies. Diagnosis and Monitoring of Diabetes Mellitus The most common screening technique for diabetes is a fasting blood sugar test like the one I gave Joe.
And exercise is especially critical for the patient with syndrome x or diabetes mellitus. Why? Studies show that exercise makes patients significantly more sensitive to their own insulin and is, therefore, a critical part of the lifestyle change needed for diabetics and those who have insulin resistance. The exercise program should include a balance of aerobic and weight-resistance exercise done at least three, and not more than five or six, times per week. It is important that people get involved in an exercise program that they enjoy. No one has to become a marathon runner.

Metabolic syndrome," or "syndrome X," is the medical term for the complex of health problems these Aborigines had developed: Large amounts of refined carbohydrates in the diet combined with a sedentary lifestyle had disordered the intricate (and still imperfectly understood) system by which the insulin hormone regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats in the body. Metabolic syndrome has been implicated not only in the development of type 2 diabetes, but also in obesity, hypertension, heart disease, and possibly certain cancers.

As many as 50 percent of individuals with high blood pressure may have syndrome x.30 Overweight individuals are more susceptible to this condition, but as many as 50 percent of hyperinsulinemic patients may be of normal weight.31 Individuals who have glucose intolerance and hyperinsulinemia should eat a diet lower in carbohydrates, whether simple or complex. A diet that is 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent fat, and 30 percent protein may help to correct the hyperinsulinemia.

And growing numbers are appearing among children and teenagers, especially in African-American and Hispanic communities.13 Lifestyle, genetics, and poor nutrition all work together to create this devastating health problem. A relatively new phenomenon in medicine, the term syndrome x was first coined by Gerry Reaven of Stanford University in the late 1980s.

Today syndrome x is a recognized condition and is well understood as a metabolic disorder. People who have untreated syndrome x are more prone to inflammatory disorders, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. The modern American diet of refined carbohydrates and low fiber and a deficiency of essential fatty acids, combined with nutritional deficiencies and a lack of exercise, sets the stage for insulin resistance.

The diamond-apple shape points to prediabetes, diabetes, and what is sometimes called metabolic syndrome and syndrome x. Belly fat results from two particular types of fat deposits. Subcutaneous fat is stored under the skin of the belly, and visceral fat is intertwined around organs in the midsection. Both subcutaneous and visceral fat secrete inflammation-causing substances that further harm the body. Measuring Your Body Proportions and Belly Fat How do you measure your belly fat? The simplest method is to stand naked in front of a mirror without sucking in your gut.
This type of blood-fat profile is part of syndrome x and is associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. (For more information, see Jack's earlier book SyndromeX.) High blood pressure. Hypertension is considered a leading risk factor for heart disease. Higher blood pressure leads to greater pounding of the blood vessels, kind of like strong waves crashing against a pier. This stress damages blood vessels. Research points to elevated insulin levels as the principal factor in hypertension. Inflammation.

Stanford first coined the term "Syndrome X" to describe the constellation of signs and symptoms caused in certain patients by insulin resistance, including high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, cholesterol and lipid abnormalities, and an increase in waist circumference. He continues to research this condition to this very day. Not everyone who is insulin resistant goes on to develop diabetes. In fact, if you discover you are insulin resistant, you can take steps to help reverse the condition.
