Sweet deals: Agave nectar, Raw Revolution food bars are a steal at Amazon.com

But over the weekend, I spotted this "sweet" deal: Organic Raw Blue Agave from Wholesome Sweeteners: Pack of six11.75-ounce bottles for just $18.75. Do the math: That's barely over $3 a bottle! Unless it's some kind of Amazon typo, it's a steal. Click here to view on Amazon.com. If you can't get the link to work, just go to Amazon.com and search for "wholesome sweeteners agave" They also have a larger size available: Six 23.5-ounce bottles for just $26.25. That's what I purchased. If you have the Amazon Prime membership ($75 a year) and you're in the U.S.
It's a super sweet liquid, but surprisingly low on the glycemic index (anywhere from 19 - 34, depending on the brand), meaning it doesn't spike blood sugar levels and invoke an exaggerated insulin response. Agave nectar is, of course, far more expensive than corn syrup. I've paid as much as $12 for a single 9 oz. bottle. Sugar Shock!: How Sweets and Simple Carbs Can Derail Your Life-- and How YouCan Get Back on Track

Then, there's the addiction argument, fueled by the fact that compelling new evidence has been pouring in (as I'll discuss in chapter 9) suggesting that, like Big Tobacco, manufacturers of processed, sweet desserts and fast foods may be making their foods just too darn "palatable"—a word that to most people means "I just can't get enough of it." In fact, new research indicates that some formulations from food companies may interfere with our satiety signals so that, as a result, we eat more than we want or need.
All carbohydrates will do it except fruit, but, of course, from a nutritional standpoint, it's obviously better to eat healthy carbohydrates such as whole grains and sweet potatoes. The correct types of carbohydrates can boost serotonin and take the edge off of PMS symptoms." Although Dr. Wurtman's theories are convincing, other experts such as Dr. Sinatra believe that it's better to eat some protein and fat at the same time to offset blood-sugar swings.
Hyde whenever I overindulge in sweet foods such as candies, cookies, cakes, cereals, sodas, ice cream, and waffles smothered with powdered sugar. Likewise, I become outright irrational and illogical after filling up on refined, fiber-stripped breads, rolls, crackers, spaghetti, chips, or white rice—in short, any processed, devitalized baked goods or what I call "much-like-sugar carbs" or "quickie carbs.
They certainly didn't think my turbulent, on-again, off-again love/hate affair with sweet snacks was to blame. Depending upon when you caught me, I'd have quickie-carb favorites. Toward "the end" (as I call it), before my "eureka" moment, I'd become overly attached to red licorice, which first seductively beckoned to me at a screening for us film reporters. Without realizing what was happening, I let one piece lead to a fistful, and soon I was scouting them out at grocery stores so I could devour 10 to 15 at a time.

Vegetables are unlimited, but one can eat sweet vegetables such as carrots and beets in moderation. If you want a sweet, sugar-free sweets are good choices, or sweets that are low in sugar (made with unsweetened fruits). It is best to eat sweets after a meal and limit yourself to one serving a day or less. Proteins and fats do not elevate your blood sugar unless they are prepared with a sweet sauce. Eat a Variety of Nutrient Groups at One Meal Each nutrient group—proteins, carbohydrates, and fats—are digested at different rates.

One famous ad for Bernays's client Lucky Strike read, "Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet."The candy companies struck back. They charged that smoking was more dangerous than being chubby. In response, Lucky Strike provided a scientific-sounding riposte that was unsupported by any real science: "The authorities are overwhelming that too many fattening sweets are harmful and that too many such [sweets] are eaten by the American people."1 Just who were these authorities? Department chairs at prestigious universities, whose eminence in science and medicine gave them the appearance of expertise.

During the process of switching from one chemical sweetener to another, it occurred to me that where I was once satisfied with one pink packet of chemicals, I now needed three of the yellow packets, which was said to be twice as sweet as the other artificial sweeteners. Increased dependency was a major clue to this chemical addiction for me. As my usage increased beyond the multicolored packets and into a variety of other products promising to keep me thin, my short-term memory deteriorated. Initially, I attributed my fading memory to age. My wife implored me to use raw sugar.

You might add a touch of stevia to sweeten it up, too, since the aloe isn't sweet by itself. If you want a really great-tasting drink buy GCW's Aloe Vera Raspberry Drink Mix (click here to view them). It's incredibly delicious even without sweeteners. It's my favorite instant drink mix! Then, while consumed by her sugar habit, Marianne admits, she had "zero sex drive." Becoming amorous was the last thing on her mind. "All I wanted to do was sit around and eat candy, not make love. I tried to keep our sex life up enough so that he wasn't miserable and insecure, but I just didn't have much interest." Soon after stopping her sugar sprees, however, Marianne discovered a surprise benefit—a big rise in libido. "My sex drive improved a lot. I also began to have more energy and fewer headaches. I started using saccharin from the pretty, pink Sweet'N Low® packets years ago when I, like many people, believed that it could help me manage my weight. Saccharin is said to be 100 times sweeter than sugar and one packet sufficed in a cup of coffee. After reading stories about cancer in rats I was soon turned off by the product. Market competition brought us another chemical, aspartame, with more pretty packets to choose from with Equal® and NutraSweet®. It wasn't long before stories about tumors related to aspartame started popping up.

The Leptin Diet: How Fit Is Your Fat?

The only way to get rid of these excess sweet cravings is to rebalance the leptin receptors on the tongue. When this happens, the desire for the taste of sweets is toned down and the cravings disappear. Individual perception of sweetness varies considerably from person to person. An adequate level of sweet-taste satisfaction should come from one-two servings of fruit a day, a moderate amount of complex carbohydrates, and an occasional treat for dessert that contains some form of sugar (in a moderate portion).

The sweet poison even the FDA didn't want to approve3 A good place to have started the War on Drugs all those years ago would have been to bring down GD Searle Corp. and prosecute its CEO, Donald Rumsfeld, for his blatant violations of the Constitution and his shameless disregard for the safety of the American people. You see, Rumsfeld is not only the current point man for the disaster in Iraq, but he was also the point man who brought to your table the most toxic substance ever added to food — aspartame (commonly known as NutraSweet).

One theory is that the high sweetness of drinks conditions people to crave sweet foods; another is that ingredients in the drinks can lead to insulin resistance or inflammation. the result of a fundamental mismatch between our ancestral insides and our modern world outside. Why is that such a problem? Because the excess sugar we consume today coalesces into a syrupy mixture that coats our organs and creates glasslike shards that can cut up the blood vessels and tissues of our body.

Specifically, sweet treats between meals do more harm than those eaten with a meal because the sugars are not diluted by other foods. The following guidelines can minimize the tooth damage initiated by sugar: • Choose your snacks carefully. Avoid chewy, sticky foods, especially as between-meal snacks. Bacteria love sweet and sticky foods. Candy, raisins, and dried fruit can cling to the teeth. This doesn't mean that you can never eat these foods, but you should brush your teeth after eating them. • Time your snacks carefully. Nibbling throughout the day gives bacteria a constant food supply.

That's why I combine fruit, dried, unsweetened fruit, and I say 'unsweetened' because fruit is naturally sweet in its own right, and you don’t need to add sweeteners to it. So we combine those dried fruits with the nuts and, nuts have all those really good beneficial pmega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, the oils, and those are slow digesting. So the combination of them actually is not only energizing, but it's also sustaining. And they’re full of fibers so they work long-term. You know, you don’t get hungry an hour later. Mike: Indeed!

If you still miss salt, try adding a little Bragg Liquid Aminos (available in health food stores), South River sweet White Miso, or low-sodium tamari. Try to limit sodium consumption to less than 2,000 mg a day. Your choices are easier when you know the salt content of various seasonings. Some useful comparisons: • Sea salt, 1 teaspoon: 2,360 mg sodium • Low-sodium tamari, 1 teaspoon: 700 mg sodium • Bragg Liquid Aminos, 1 teaspoon: 233 mg sodium • South River sweet White Miso, 1 teaspoon: 115 mg sodium It is helpful to keep breakfast and lunch simple—and nearly the same every day.

The Leptin Diet: How Fit Is Your Fat?

The tongue has leptin receptors on it that are tuned to sweet taste. When leptin is out of balance, the desire for sweet-tasting foods can be overwhelming. This includes cravings for junk sweets and chocolate, or it may involve cravings for complex carbohydrates such as bread products (especially if they have some kind of sugar on top). Junk-food processors frequently add hidden sugars to their products, which are covered up by other flavors.
If you feel deprived of the taste of sweets from these guidelines, realize you are a sweet addict and have succumbed to the marketing ploys of the vested-interest trash-food monopoly. You have become a pawn in their game of profits at the expense of your health. They are controlling your brain. After a few months of following the Five Rules, you have the chance to recover from this addiction and become normal again. In the meantime, find something else to do besides eating sweets or using sugar alternatives. The problem is your abnormal sense of taste.

THE DANGERS OF A sweet TOOTH People and plaque-promoting bacteria have something in common: they both love sweets. Though the bacteria in your mouth thrive on all types of sugar, they seem to grow best on a diet of sucrose, ordinary white table sugar. The prevalence and severity of dental cavities took a sharp upward swing in the middle of the nineteenth century, corresponding to a rapid rise in the consumption of sugar. Moreover, a higher rate of cavities appears suddenly in countries that change from diets traditionally low in sugar to a Western diet high in sugar.

Another way to control your sweet tooth is to satisfy the dietary need that makes you feel that you need something sweet. Chromium picolinate supplementation (200 meg daily) has proven effective for this by helping the body metabolize fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, it can also give you increased energy and suppress appetite.

The full name of the disease is actually diabetes mellitus—which literally means "passing through honey sweet." One of the first outward manifestations of diabetes is the need to pass large amounts of sugary urine. And for thousands of years, observers have noticed that diabetics' urine smells (and tastes) particularly sweet. In the past Chinese physicians actually diagnosed and monitored diabetes by looking to see whether ants were attracted to someone's urine.

The native flora and fauna offered so little to eat that the new arrivals' diet was based on chickens and sweet potatoes they brought with them. sweet potato cultivation took little effort in the island's hot, humid environment, leaving the islanders with enough free time to develop a complex society centered on carving and erecting gigantic stone heads. The monstrous statues were carved at a quarry, transported across the island, and then capped by a massive topknot of red stone from a different quarry.
