One is that to carry anything on it, you have to lean forward, so you're walking around all day carrying this huge load on your back, and it's really bad for your posture and spine. The human body was not designed to carry weight in this way, and if you do it for a prolonged period of time, it can lead to posture problems or injury. In fact, just putting on a weighted backpack can injure people because of the twisting motion of the spine and the abnormal lifting of weight. |

| Did You Know A Misaligned spine Can Cause Colon Dysfunction?
A less obvious physical stressor is a misaligned spine. Injury, poor sitting, sleeping, standing posture, or abnormal growth patterns in the spine result in vertebral misalignment. The displacement of vertebrae is referred to as subluxation, which stresses the spinal muscles, discs, and joints. The nervous system can also become aggravated, which can further hinder organ functions all over the body. |

To prevent a whip action of your neck, try not to let your head move much with the flexing action of the spine. Start slowly to loosen up your spine—one cycle every 2 to 3 seconds. Close your eyes and concentrate on the sound of the breathing. If your mind wanders, try to bring it back to focus on your breathing. Do this for 1 minute at first, gradually increasing over time to 2 minutes. Then over the next several weeks, pick up the speed at which you do these exercises until you can do one cycle of spine extension and flexion in one second. |

The other problem with backpacks -- and I'm sure all of you who have done any hiking can certainly understand this one -- is that when you're carrying stuff in the backpack, you can't get to it easily. What good is having all this stuff in your pack, if you can't reach it? |

The biggest problem with this piece of equipment is that it is a rotary torso movement which can place stress on the spine if not performed properly. The dangers are increased when additional resistance is added, placing more pressure on your spine as you twist your body back and forth. Those with back problems should avoid this movement altogether.
There is a simple tension knob to adjust the resistance on the Red Exerciser called the "Torsion Max Resistance System" which makes it sounds like there is some sort of advanced technology involved. The piece of equipment is anything but advanced. |

| Researchers from the National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Taiwan examined tea drinking habits and total body, spine, and hip bone strength of over one thousand Chinese men and women.
They found that people who drank tea at least once a week for more than six years had better bone strength in the spine than people who drank tea less often. What's more, people who drank tea at least once a week for more than 10 years showed better bone strength in the spine, hip, and total body than less frequent tea drinkers.

One thing he will be looking to answer in his pig study is the question of distance: it's one thing to grow new axons the short fourteen centimeters it takes to travel from a rat's spine to his feet. But what about the greater length nerves must run from a pig's spine to its toes? And what about the distance motor neurons have to travel in, say, a six-foot-tall man, whose longest nerve spans a full three feet?
Kerr is hoping to start clinical trials in paralyzed adults within five years—before 2012—if all goes well in his study on pigs. |

When surgeons operate on people with ruptured discs and osteoarthritis of the spine, they often find uric acid crystals and calcium crystals in the intervertebral disc and in material removed from the spine. This is especially true in arthritis involving the neck (these patients may have severe headaches and/or fever).

Because of the bone loss in osteoporosis, the spine can sustain tiny fractures, called vertebral compression fractures. Over time, the spinal structures pancake on themselves, resulting in a noticeable loss of height.
CURVED BACK
A crooked back can signal scoliosis, a curvature of the spine. The curve is almost always noticed first by others and can be seen most easily when you bend over from the waist. Sometimes people with scoliosis will spy the problem themselves; for example, they may notice that one shoulder or one hip is higher than the other when they look at themselves in a mirror. |

Although this usually translates into pain in all four quadrants, or quarters, of the body, someone with pain in three areas—for example, the right shoulder, left buttock, and spine— would also satisfy the list for having "widespread pain" and would receive the diagnosis of FM, while someone with pain in the right shoulder, right buttock, and spine would not. In addition to pain, the patient must have tenderness or pain in at least eleven of the eighteen points depicted in the figure on page 60. |

The information pathway of Energetic Integrator 6 goes through the white matter of the brain and down the white matter of the spine. It bioenergetically connects to the thalamus, pineal gland, medulla oblongata, and the arachnoid membrane (lining of the skull). It relates to the skull as a cavity and its role in the attraction and storage of Source energy, which, of course, has immense ramifications for brain function. Energetic Integrator 6 also has strong connections to the emotional self, so it is important in maintaining physical-emotional harmony. |

More common are fractures in the vertebral body (the bones of the spine), which usually are not associated with pain but may cause a bowing of the back. In the elderly, 25% of hip fractures lead to a permanent loss of independent function. No wonder many seniors, especially frail ones, live in mortal fear of fractures that may send them to oft-dreaded nursing homes for the rest of their few remaining days (although my neighbor lived out her long life at home).

I had never thought to test the two for a match, but it turns out that they are connected, they match, they 'talk' to each other—whatever you want to call it. You could say NES links with osteopathy and chiropractic!
"It doesn't always work out that way," Peter continued. "Sometimes people say that this or that happened, and I go to the lab and check, and the match cannot be verified. |
| Also, because Integrator 3 bioenergetically regulates calcium metabolism in general, it is strongly linked to all of your bones, not just those of your spine. Hence, Integrator 3 is implicated bioenergetically in such conditions as osteoporosis. We should note that Integrator 5 also is linked to the bones, but for different reasons, which we will discuss when we describe that Integrator.
As with every Energetic Integrator, the bioenergetic influence of this one also reaches far and wide, influencing many different organs and physiological processes. |

Those who consumed more protein had less bone loss, and those who consumed less protein had more bone loss, both at the femoral bone and at the spine. The study also found that "higher intake of animal protein does not appear to affect the skeleton adversely." Calcium is better absorbed on a higher-protein diet, even if there is somewhat more urinary calcium excretion. High-protein diets in two recent studies resulted in significantly more calcium absorption than the low-protein diets they were compared to. |

In humans, the mother can't do that (even if she is squatting) because the baby is facing away—if she tries to assist the baby she risks bending its neck or spine the wrong way and causing serious injury. Trevathan believes this "triple threat"of big brains, a pelvis designed for walking, and backward-facing babies led to the nearly universal human tradition of helping one another with delivery. Every other primate generally goes it alone when it comes time to give birth. |

Since nerves from the spine go to all parts of the body, subluxations can cause malfunctions throughout the body (most significantly, in internal organs) because of insufficient electrical communication from the brain.
True chiropractic treatment focuses on restoring health to the entire spinal column and balancing the nervous system to restore life force to an optimum level, so energy can flow freely from the head down, and from inside to the outside. |

ENERGETIC INTEGRATOR 7: BLOOD FIELD /GALLBLADDER MERIDIAN
Whereas Energetic Integrators 5 and 6 relate bioenergetically to the brain and/or spine's white matter, Energetic Integrator 7 connects to the gray matter. It especially is tightly linked to the motor cortex of the brain, so it is correlated clinically to all types of motor problems, from twitches and numbness to gait problems.
In TCM, the gallbladder meridian passes through the hip, in particular the great trochanter, and down the body to the toes. However,
Peter's matching experiments could not confirm this route. |

An intensely painful disease, gout most often affects only one joint, typically the big toe, although it can affect other joints, including the ankle, heel, instep, knee, wrist, elbow, or spine. Urate crystals are deposited in tendons, joints, subcutaneous tissue, cartilage, kidneys, and other tissues, and cause inflammation and damage.
Painful gout attacks usually occur at night, may involve fever and chills and are generally preceded by alcohol ingestion, dietary excess, stress, trauma, or certain drugs. |

We saw that Energetic Integrator 3 dealt with the bones of your spinal column, and we see the spine again in Energetic Integrator 5, only this time the focus is on the spinal nerves. Integrator 5 is sometimes called the Chiropractic Integrator because it communicates bioenergetically with your vertebra and discs via your spinal nerves. Balance is controlled, bioenergetically speaking, via this Integrator through its connection to the cerebellum and cochlear nerve. |
