Acetyl-l-carnitine is present in human sperm and seminal fluid and plays an important part in energy metabolism, which may support healthy sperm motility and sperm production. As a nitric oxide precursor, L-arginine may support healthy sexual function in men with low urinary nitric oxide values.
?Studies have already shown that an acetyl-l-carnitine arginine complex supported healthy neuron viability in a cellular in vitro experiment. |

Russ Hauser and Susan Duty studied men in an infertility clinic and found that men who had higher levels of DBP in their bodies had lower sperm quality and lower sperm motility.14 In a separate study of 379 men from an infertility clinic, the Harvard researchers correlated diethyl phthalate (DEP) with DNA damage in the men's sperm, a condition that can lead to infertility or miscarriage.15 DEP is the phthalate used most widely in cosmetics. The chemical appears to be getting into people's bodies from the products, according to another study conducted by Dr. Hauser's team. |

Such interference with normal gene expression may result in unhealthy Sertoli cells or spermatocytes, either of which might interfere with sperm health or quantity.
As in the case of pancreatic cells in the previous study, "A decrease in the number of nuclear pores (NP) was also detected in GM soy fed mice." 82 Pores are the gateway through which RNA and proteins move in and out of the cell nucleus. Their reduced number in Sertoli cells and spermatocytes suggests lower molecular trafficking. |

Fluid created by the prostate is secreted into the urethra (the tube in the penis that is the conduit for both urine and semen), where it combines with and protects sperm from the testicles. Semen protects sperm and plays an important role in male fertility.
Fertility isn't usually a top priority for most men over fifty, unless they are in a relationship with a woman still in her childbearing years who wants to have children. A more odious condition is BPH. The prostate wraps around the urethra where the urethra exits the bladder. |

These results were very encouraging: 66% had an improvement in sperm concentration (statistically significant), 53% had an improvement in motility, and 46% had improvements in morphology (the shape of the sperm cells). Twenty-three percent of the men were able to conceive during the trial. The researchers recommended that all men with low sperm counts be given a therapeutic trial of lycopene for their infertility.

A single ejaculation contains 200 to 500 million sperm cells. If we consider each sperm cell as a potential human being, there are sufficient sperm cells for a man in a few days to generate the current population of the Earth. That is the power of semen. |

Further observations revealed that the longer the duration of pesticide exposure, the lower the sperm count dropped: the longer men were exposed to this pesticide, the fewer sperm they had. Worse still, after a couple of years of working with this particular pesticide, sperm production totally and irreversibly ceased in many, leaving them irreversibly infertile. |

It also increases the quantity of semen men produce and the motility of their sperm. In animal studies it has been shown to stimulate the maturation of multiple egg follicles. It is also used as a tonic for recovering alcoholics, helping to decrease cravings for alcohol.

In a recent study, German and Italian researchers found that a particular selenium-containing enzyme, phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase, is produced in large quantities in developing sperm, where it protects against free-radical damage to DNA. However, the function of this enzyme changes as sperm mature, and it provides some of the physical structure of sperm.
In a series of animal experiments and human studies, Melinda Beck, Ph.D., of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that selenium can curb the spread of flu and coxsackie viruses. |

Zinc levels are usually much lower in infertile men with low sperm counts. One study showed that increasing zinc and folic acid levels helped increase sperm counts in infertile men.
But zinc is hardly just a man's mineral. It has been shown in studies to aid children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and help prevent or retard the progression of macular degeneration, the leading cause of adult blindness. |

The rise in dairy consumption since the 1940s inversely parallels the drop in sperm counts. Avoidance of hormone-fed animal products and milk products are important for male sexual vitality, especially in men with low sperm counts or low testosterone levels.

Sperm count and semen volume were increased with maca at either dose.
Why the effects? Who knows? Maca contains two novel groups of compounds— macamides and macaenes, which may be responsible for its effects. Maca also contains the amino acid L-arginine (see below), which has been shown to increase sperm production and motility and is necessary for the creation of nitric oxide, a molecule that is necessary for erections.
"For the Sex, of Course!"
An interesting theory on maca and sexual activity has to do with the fact that maca contains high amounts of an amino acid called histidine. |

But a painless lump may merely be a sign of a spermatocele, a benign cyst-like
SIGN OF THE TIMES collection of sperm within the scrotum but attached to the epididymis. Or it can signal a testicular injury or infection.
Unfortunately, sometimes a firm, painless lump can be a marker for testicular cancer; in fact, it's the most common sign. Other possible signs include a heaviness or discomfort in the scrotum; a dull ache in the groin, abdomen, or back; or enlarged or tender breasts. (See Chapter 7.) However, some men with testicular cancer have no discernible signs at all. |

Sons of mothers with low beef consumption have sperm concentrations 24.3 percent higher than those of high-beef-consumption mothers. Eighteen percent of sons of mothers with high beef consumption had sperm levels lower than what the World Health Organization considers the lower limit of subfertil-ity—this rate of infertility is three times higher than sons of mothers with low beef consumption. Extrapolating, we have two theoretical potentials: sons of vegan mothers are more virile, and vegan men are more virile. |
| PCBs in 100 percent of all human sperm samples. According to a Washington Post article in 1979, PCBs are considered one of the main reasons that the average sperm count of the American male is approximately 70 percent of what it was thirty years ago. This same article also points out that 25 percent of college students were sterile at the time as compared to 0.5 percent thirty-five years earlier. Most toxicity experts agree that the main source of human contamination comes from eating fish from waters in which the PCB levels are high, which today can be almost anywhere. |

| Fertility Effects: A water extract of Astragalus membranaceus showed a significant stimulatory effect on human sperm motility (Hong, 1992).
Fibrinolytic Effects: The in vitro fibrinolytic/antithrombotic activity demonstrated by Astragalus is compatible with its use in patients with heart disease. Astragaloside IV increases the fibrinolytic potential of endothelial cells by up-regulating the expression of tissue-type plasminogen activator and by down-regulating the expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (Zhang, 1997). |
