Melatonin deficiency seems to be a key component in the incidence of sleep disorders in elderly subjects and melatonin replacement therapy may be of benefit," the researchers concluded.31 and noninvasive, and tests can easily be performed at any time or place. Because levels of many hormones, including DHEA, Cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, are highest in the morning, it is far more convenient to be able to test them at home. |

The International Longevity Center-USA, a research policy organization in New York City led by my friend and colleague Bob Butler, recently released its sleep and healthy aging tips for older adults, which offer comprehensive advice:
Do:
?Go to bed at the same time each night, and get up and out of bed at the same time each morning.
?Keep your bedroom/sleeping area dark, cool, quiet, restful, and comfortable.
?If you cannot fall asleep within twenty minutes, get out of bed and read something boring until you feel sleepy.

| It is believed that memories are consolidated by the brain during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Thus, sleep deprivation can cause difficulties in the storage and recall process, which is why you may not feel quite as sharp after a night of tossing and turning. Though everyone varies in their sleeping patterns, a good rule of thumb for keeping your memory strong day to day is to make sure you keep regular sleeping habits and get seven or so hours a night. |

Women's Hormones and sleep Disorders
For women at midlife, the natural interplay between the two primary female hormones, estrogen and progesterone (see "A Hormone Glossary," page 184), takes on a new significance. As a woman approaches menopause, her hormone levels begin to shift, and this can start to occur as much as 10 to 15 years before menopause. Many women don't realize that they may start having some symptoms of menopause long before what is still referred to as "The Change" is due; this phase of changing hormone levels and its symptoms is called perimenopause. |
| The B vitamins (particularly B6) are also important for sleep, as they regulate the body's use of L-tryptophan. In the absence of adequate vitamin B6, the body cannot convert L-tryptophan into melatonin. Deficiencies in folic acid (also known as folacin or folate), another member of the B vitamin family, have been linked to insomnia and restless legs syndrome.16
• Vitamin E deficiency may be a factor in restless legs syndrome.17
• People suffering from insomnia may be deficient in the mineral zinc, particularly infants with frequent nighttime waking and crying. |
| As a result, he stayed up until the early morning hours and then would wake a number of times once he finally got to sleep.
Darren's diet was high in sugars and fatty foods, such as cheese and peanut butter. He frequently felt bloated and gassy and estimated he was 30 pounds overweight. In addition to the insomnia, lethargy, and depression, he had suffered with hay fever since the age of 17, and also had chronic neck pain from sitting and looking down into a microscope at work.
Darren decided to get a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diagnosis. |

Set aside a specific time for worrying.
Many of us tend to worry about the day's events or next day while in bed. Dr. Ancoli-lsrael recommends spending time in the daytime to process your concerns. "We suggest that people find 30 minutes earlier in the day when they can sit down quietly, put out the Do Not Disturb sign, and worry. That's your chance to sit and think about all the things that you're concerned about. We also recommend getting it out of your head and onto paper or your computer. Make a list of all that is on your mind. |

Sources of Toxins
We are exposed to toxins every day of our lives, in air and water pollution, chemical and pesticide residues, mercury amalgam dental fillings, biological contaminants such as pollen and parasites, and genetically altered foods, among other sources. Even our own bodies can produce toxins, called endotoxins, which can be harmful if their numbers become excessive or if they aren't adequately neutralized.
Environmental Pollution
Toxins emanate from a variety of sources, but chiefly from environmental pollution. |

It's a mix of valerian, Jamaican dogwood, Sun Theanine and wild lettuce -- and a number of other excellent herbs that work very well for sleep. Anybody with insomnia can take one to four of these at bedtime and it's excellent. I do want to note one thing about theanine, which comes from green tea. It is the only nutrient that has been shown to increase deep sleep -- and there are very few medications that have been shown to do this. Sun Theanine -- and it needs to be the Sun Theanine form, not the regular theanine -- has been shown to increase deep sleep. |
| You really want to get your eight to nine hours of sleep a night because, again, your body heals during sleep and makes growth hormones during sleep -- that's what heals the tissues and gets rid of the pain.
Mike: Very good. What else do you have?
Teitelbaum: Well, for hormonal support, the two key hormones would be adrenal and thyroid. If you get irritable when you're hungry, which is hypoglycemia, you need adrenal support. Our Adrenal Stress End is outstanding for that. |

Is the tachycardia present during sleep? If present during sleep, causes such as caffeinism or other drug effects and hyperthyroidism need to be considered.
4. Has there been any weight loss? If there is weight loss and tachycardia, hyperthyroidism is likely.
Tests
Once a thorough history has been obtained, the diagnostic work-up involves various tests depending on the nature of the anxiety.1 If the anxiety was found to be intermittent, it might be necessary to perform a wake-and-sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) and possibly a computed tomography (CT) scan to rule out a cerebral tumor. |

For example, the one category for "disorders of sleep" was replaced by 15 different categories, ranging from "primary insomnia" to "breathing-related sleep difficulties."
Thus, over time, DSM-IV became, in the words of its editors, a detailed "classification of mental disorders that was developed for use in clinical, educational and research settings."17 Yet even as it became a standard reference, its wise authors recognized that they are dealing with muddy foundational concepts.18
Some scholars, psychiatrists among them, rejected the very notion that emotional problems are illnesses. |

Contact with geomagnetic fields may play a primary role in maintaining the equilibrium of the nervous system. Indeed, the Earth's tiny geomagnetic fluctuations have the most profound effect on the two major engines of the body: the heart and the brain.
Persinger went on to discover other extraordinary geophysical effects on human beings. |

And they can sleep at night. And sleeping at night, and the inability to sleep at night is a billion-dollar business. Stress is a contributing factor to many chronic ongoing diseases, and it compromises a person's immune system, so this is a health benefit that people are recognizing, either consciously or subconsciously, they're recognizing real value and benefit when they participate, when they vote with their dollars on something that's good for other people.

Krippner had perfected an experimental protocol to test telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition in dreams during deep sleep. Volunteers would be paired off. |

The next problem she encountered was a sleep disorder. Although she tried a number of solutions, such as medication, less coffee, and warm milk nothing seemed to help. She continued to struggle with erratic sleep patterns for the next four years. She also experienced confusion, memory loss, and visual disturbances. Soon she became aware of joint pain, knots in her shoulders, headaches, and a sore throat—those symptoms were more apparent in the morning hours; but the sore throat and mild headaches were a constant problem. |

Researchers have concluded that a sleep deficit leads to elevated levels of ghrelin in your system. If you are not getting enough sleep, your body responds by telling you that you are hungrier. Furthermore, when you do eat, it will take you longer to feel full and satisfied. This is because the amount of leptin in your system has decreased. The combination of elevated ghrelin (making you feel constantly hungry) and decreased leptin (telling you that you still aren't full) will wreak havoc on your waistline. |
