As Linda and I write these words, we too sit metaphorically on the shoulders of giants as we once sat, literally, upon the shoulders of our own departed fathers, and we look from this great height with new eyes. When Linda's father passed, he was honored by the American College of Cardiology as being a "gentle giant."
Everything you've read, and will read in this book reflects the evolving vision that comes from sitting on the shoulders of those who've come before us, the scientists and mystics we honor in this book. They are the pillars, we are the children. |

Inhale and raise your shoulders up toward your ears, then exhale, letting your shoulders down again. Breathe only through your nose; keep your eyes closed and focus into the distance. As before, listen to the sound of your inhalation and exhalation. If your mind wanders, try to bring it back to the sound of your breathing. Continue this action rapidly, building to three times per second for a maximum time of 2 minutes.
Technique against fatigue and listlessness. If you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, skip this exercise. Sit with a straight spine. |

THREE GIANTS
We are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, purportedly said Bernard d'Chartres, the twelfth-century French philosopher. To the extent that he saw further and clearer, he said, it was not because of sharper vision, but rather that he was carried on the shoulders of giants. The phrase has become famous, used by Isaac Newton, and more recently by the eminent sociologist Robert Merton—from whom we learned it—to describe how science advances.
Three groups of giants (for, as sociologists, we always think of groups) have allowed us to imagine this book. |

The responsibility for making the right decision rests on your shoulders, on my shoulders and on the shoulders of all consumers everywhere, because the only way we are going to change this modern food system is to shift the demand curves. We must force companies to stop poisoning our planet by making it unprofitable for them to do so, and the only way we can do that is by changing our purchasing habits at the grocery store. Change what you buy, and you will change the world. Thanks for reading. This is Mike Adams, the Health Ranger. |

| Poorposture—rounding the shoulders, stooping forward, etc.—can inhibit oxygen intake.
People who stand straight, roll back their shoulders, push their chests out while squeezing their shoulder blades together and keep their chin up can increase lung capacity by 5%.
Helpful: To ensure proper form, practice this while looking in a full-length mirror.
Step 3: Exercise. Aerobic exercise increases pathways in the body that carry oxygen to cells. People who start an aerobic exercise program experience an immediate increase in oxygen usage and energy. |

Next place your hands on your hips, roll your shoulders forward, and bow forward slightly as you pull your shoulders and elbows forward. Inspect both breasts for swelling, changes in skin (dimpling, puckering, discoloration, or scaling of skin), or changes in your nipples, including retraction or discharge.
2. The second step is to lie down and place a small pillow or folded towel under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. |

Motor tics usually involve the muscles of the face (especially around the eye), head, and neck, producing movements such as blinking, facial twitching, and shrugging of the shoulders. They can, however, affect other parts of the body. Common vocal tics include grunting and clearing the throat.
Tics and twitches usually develop during childhood and tend to affect boys more often that girls. As many as one in four children will develop a "transient" or "simple" tic, which subsides with age, at some point during their school years. |

Only years after she died did I learn how Bubbe Fanne got the thick red scars that ran down her arms and across her shoulders and chest. Long after his mother had pulled him from a blazing building, my father eluded death another time. As a drill sergeant, he snatched a live grenade from the shaking hands of a green army recruit and tossed it away just before it blew to smithereens.
If my grandmothers or father had lacked good timing, they wouldn't have survived. My brothers and sister and I wouldn't be here. You could say that perseverance is a family trait. |

Relax your shoulders and breathe in as deeply as you can, and then slowly release the air from your lungs. Do this several times. Breathe as if you are inflating your whole body, clear down to your toes. Pause and then slowly exhale. Feels great, doesn't it? The air that enters our lungs brings life. And as we quicken our breathing through aerobic exercise or running, we feel invigorated and may even experience a feeling of euphoria.
Being a doctor, I like to imagine what is happening inside my body at a cellular level as oxygen enters through my nose and travels to my lungs. |

Activating pressure points in the cheek, nose and on parts of the chest, back and shoulders can often help relieve asthma and act as a preventive measure. The Chinese, in particular, believe that pressure and stimulation of the lung points successfully relieves asthma and the most effective areas are located in the elbow crease and above the wrist. Acupressure to these points also helps coughs, headaches and a stiff neck. Asthma lung points are shown on the next page. |

Soon she became aware of joint pain, knots in her shoulders, headaches, and a sore throat—those symptoms were more apparent in the morning hours; but the sore throat and mild headaches were a constant problem. She realized something very serious was affecting the quality of her health.
When she began waking each morning with stiffness, she knew it was time to seek medical help. At this point she was getting only three to four hours of sleep at night, and those few hours were not restful. Her nerves were frayed, and every little noise and action set her off. |

I just shrugged my shoulders. I knew it was hopeless.
"Lady, you should be careful about hotdogs," the vendor said. "You know hotdogs can cause cancer."
My mother smiled and shrugged. "That's okay. I already have cancer."
The Hillman Center was the place where she got the best care, but at that time it did not offer much advice about whether there were any things—like eating hotdogs or not—that she should or should not do to keep herself well as she dealt with this disease. |
| She shrugged her shoulders, put her chin to her left shoulder with her lips pursed downward. "Too many words ."That was all she ever said about it.
On her final day, my mother gave the entire family one last gift. Her granddaughter Claire was to celebrate her bat mitzvah on Saturday, June 22, 2003. According to tradition, if Mom had died, the bat mitzvah would still have been held, but there would have been no party afterward. As the day of the bat mitzvah dawned, Mom's breathing was slow and shallow. Mom's skin was graying, even beneath the slight tan she was so pleased to have acquired. |

With your pelvis tucked under and back straight, use your shoulders to circle your arms and squat down as you rotate your arms around in one direction—as though you are cleaning a mirror. Kneel on the floor near the toilet, in the 'head-to-floor' position so that the rectum is higher than the shoulders. This position allows the water to run more easily into the colon. If for some reason it is not possible to assume this position, an alternate is to lie on the right side or on the back.
6 Insert the nozzle gently. If it will not go in all the way, it should do so once the flow of water is begun. It will be necessary to hold the nozzle in place throughout the enema session, as the body will tend to push it out. |

Tenosynovitis (inflammation of the tendon sheath) of the wrist associated with typing or operating a word processor is the most common repetitive strain injury. Appropriate work furniture can help prevent injuries by keeping the back and hands in the correct position and as relaxed as possible. RSI can be painful, and may eventually result in the loss of function in a limb. |
