So nuts and seeds include everything from almonds to walnuts as well as sunflower seeds, sesame seed, pumpkin seeds, and pine nuts. For the purposes of SuperFoods Rx, my top picks include sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. I encourage people to include seeds in this food category and use them regularly as snacks, and in salads, cereals, and casseroles. I eat a handful of nuts and/or seeds every morning. I also prefer jams with seeds and I even eat watermelon seeds. |

Grinding flaxseeds in a seed or coffee bean grinder boosts their digestibility and nutritional value.
?When buying ground flaxseeds, look for vacuum-sealed and/or refrigerated packages, as the seeds are much more susceptible to oxidation once they are ground. Store ground seeds in an airtight container and refrigerate.
?Flaxseeds can be sprinkled on cereal and vegetables, added to breakfast shakes, or mixed into muffin, bread, or cookie recipes.
?When adding ground flaxseeds to a cooked dish, do so at the end of the cooking time. |

You can buy them in the form of flaxseed meal, or you can buy them in seed form and grind them yourself in a coffee grinder or mini food processor. The seeds must be ground, as the nutrients are difficult to absorb from the whole seed. Since the oil in flaxseeds spoils quickly, ideally it's best to grind them as you go. Some people use a grinder, dedicated to flaxseeds, and grind them in small amounts, keeping the ground portion in the fridge in a small glass jar. I keep flaxmeal—already ground flaxseed, which you can buy in health food stores—in a plastic container in the fridge. |

Raw, Unsalted Nut and seed List
Nuts and seeds are rich in protein. You can select any 2 of the nuts and seeds when you are planning a meal. If you eat meat you still should not eat it over 3 times weekly, and on the other days you should eat the nuts or seeds for your protein. If you have tender gums or unreliable dentures, then you should purchase a coffee mill or small nut and seed grinding machine to make it easier to masticate, assimilate and digest nuts and seeds. |

Mark sent me all four photos of seeds, each nestled in a seed pocket; right before our experiment was to begin, I asked a member of the audience to select our target randomly. We'd tried to model the wording of intention closely to that used by Roney-Dougal in her experiments—for the target seeds "to enjoy enhanced germination, greater growth and greater health." After our 10-minute intention, Mark planted the seeds and during the next two weeks took regular measurements.
Before we even had our first results, I wanted to run the experiment on our website. |

The synergy inherent in this little seed is drawn from a number of its components, though the specific dynamics remain unclear. For example, many studies have clearly demonstrated that flaxseed offers cancer-protective effects in the body, but researchers aren't sure just which specific component accomplishes that. It could be the plant's lignans, its omega-3s—or the synergistic interactions between these components.
To get the biggest bang for your one buck (that's about what a pound of flaxseed costs), you are probably better off getting everything in the ground seed. |
| It's ground flaxseed, not whole, you want to add a spoon of here and there because all those wonderful components aren't absorbed and available until the seed is ground. Keep your ground flax in the freezer to preserve its freshness, and add a tablespoon a day, if you can, by stirring it into your yogurt, cereal, smoothie, or stew.
When baking, you can usually replace Va cup of every 1 cup of flour in recipes with ground flaxseed. This means that instead of 1 cup of flour, you could use Va cup flaxseed and 34 cup flour.

Recent studies have shown that flaxseed has protective effects against cancer, particularly of the breast, prostate, and colon, with the effect depending on the stage of carcinogenesis. Here's a snapshot of the nutrients in flax responsible for those feats. |

Basmati rice was briefly owned by a company in the United States, which then went out of its way to sue farmers in Southeast Asia for growing this rice, but thankfully the Indian government was successful in challenging the company's ownership over this seed.
Similarly, companies have been given patent ownership over sequences of the human genome. Imagine that! You're walking around with a genetic sequence in every cell in your body, thinking, "Hey, I own my own body." But, no! The U.S. patent office says you don't own your own genetic code; rather, all these various companies own it. |
| Every seed is imbued with qualities of life, and when you eat raw fruits, vegetables or nuts, you ingest more than just their chemical constituents. You also ingest the homeopathy of plants, or what I also call vibrational nutrition.
I very much doubt that food fabrication is going to be able to duplicate this energetic component of foods. |

Tips: Eat a salad or other high-fiber foods before consuming juices made from concentrate (including pom juice, grape juice, orange juice, blueberry juice or even apple juice). |

The third study had to be analyzed on its own, as the design was different—with a longer growth time (6 hours), a more focused intention (a specific growth instruction), and separate seed group growing conditions. According to his calculations, the Rhinebeck study had generated significantly larger seed growth overall (in both intention and control seeds) than the other two.
The combined results of Experiments 1 and 2 showed a significant effect with one set of the statistics, while Experiment 3 showed a significant effect with both sets of statistics. |

Any time you have a seed, you have everything needed to make it into something wonderful. I think oftentimes you just have to follow your intuition on things -- you see it and eat some of it, and it just feels right to you. My interest in chia bubbled under the surface for years because they were not readily available.
Chia seeds probably will last 20 or 30 years. They do not go bad. Someone bought a container of them and distributed small amounts to health food stores throughout the U.S., and that container probably lasted for 15 years. The seeds were good. |

When a seed germinates, it creates a storehouse of vitamins and enzymes that it will need in order to grow and thrive as a live, healthy plant. So eating sprouted grains or seeds is always much better for you than just grinding up the dry seeds and eating those.
Next we have the sprouted organic Quinoa, and again, we have the substantial benefit of these seeds being sprouted. But we also have all the remarkable qualities of Quinoa itself. Quinoa is something that I call a "supergrain." It is one of the few grains that offers a complete protein all by itself. |

Ward placed the chrysalis of a moth in a sealed glass jar to observe its emergence into mothhood; he also noted that a plant (some say two plants) developed, within the sealed environment, from seed into sapling. He had discovered the principle of the unique specialized environment, in which the air plus moisture enclosed in the sealed case produces vapor and carbon dioxide during the day, and oxygen, dew, and even frost (depending upon inducec temperature) by night. No foreign diseases, fungi, or viruses could attack the plant within the case. |

As of May 2001, all seed corn in the United States was thought to be contaminated with at least a trace of genetically engineered material. Organic groups believe that GE pollution of American commodities is so pervasive that it is not possible for farmers to keep their sources of seeds pure.43
It appears that some farmers whose land was contaminated with GE seeds are being sued because they did not buy GE seeds from Monsanto. This in turn has lead to counter suits because they claim they never planted or wanted the modified seeds. |

PHYTATES ties that bind
Phytates are natural compounds found in beans, grains and other seeds that serve two primary functions: they prevent premature germination and they store the phosphorous that a plant needs to grow when the seed begins to sprout. Because phytates stop oxidative damage such as discoloration and decomposition, food processing companies use them as preservatives.1"4
Phytates are valuable plant components that allow humans to store seeds safely over the winter, but a potential problem if you want to eat those seeds, grains and beans. |

Unfortunately, Harriot gave him potato seed rather than tubers, and Raleigh, not unnaturally, experienced indigestion rather than nourishment.1 Despite this inauspicious start, potatoes had become a staple of the Irish by 1625. Unfortunately everything about this story except the last sentence is untrue.
Drake certainly knew about the potato: He had been offered it in Chile in 1577 during his voyage around the world. Potatoes were not indigenous to either the West Indies or Virginia, and originally grew only in the Andean highlands. |
