ROYAL JELLY
This ancient Chinese food of nature is made by bees, as it is the special food fed to the larvae who will grow up to be queens rather than workers. royal jelly has been used for centuries to ward off disease: Hippocrates is said to have mentioned it in his teachings in the fourth century BC. royal jelly is not used as a drug to combat any particular disease, but rather as a health-giving supplement.

In fact, no clear evidence exists to support claims of internal usefulness for royal jelly as a therapeutic agent—though one study showed that royal jelly (at approximately 50 to 100 mg per day) reduced total serum cholesterol and serum lipid levels. And neopterin—a substance found in humans that appears to play an important role in the human immune system—has been isolated from royal jelly.
Still, it is a greatly nutritious food—containing all the B-complex vitamins, including a high concentration of B5—plus minerals, vitamins A, C, D, and E, eighteen amino acids, enzymes, and hormones. |

Even the tongue-in-cheek name ('royal fern') announces that the game has changed: ferns, of course, have no smell, and there is nothing royal about them.* What made Fougere Royale so special in 1881? It made use of a freshly minted synthetic ingredient called coumarin. To be sure, coumarin was contained in many natural products available to Parquet. But to have it pure, and cheap, allowed him to use a big dose and to get a different effect altogether. I am sitting across the desk of the osmothecaire waiting to be summoned down to the cold room to smell Fougere Royale. |

The domestication of strawberries seems to have begun in France in the mid-fourteenth century, as gardeners sought to transplant wild strawberry bushes in the royal gardens. The considerable efforts expended testify to a certain kingly passion for these berries: in 1368, Jean Dudoy, royal gardener to France's King Charles V, transplanted no fewer than 1,200 strawberry bushes into the royal gardens at the Louvre, in Paris. Indeed, the close relationship between strawberries and royalty is of long standing in French history. |

In 1677 the royal treasury pocketed f 100,000 from import duties on Virginian tobacco and another £50,000 from Maryland tobacco. Virginia returned more to the royal pocketbook than any other colony; more than four times the revenue from the East Indies.
Not surprisingly, colonial governments piled on to use tobacco to raise revenue. Once hooked on the new source of cash, they quickly squashed attempts to stem reliance on tobacco. When Virginians requested a tem-porary ban on tobacco growing in 1662, they were unsubtly told never to make such a request again. |

© royal Jelly Eye Creme ($15 for 0.5 ounce) shares the same basic formula as most of the Burt's Bees moisturizers above that combine a nonvolatile plant oil with glycerin and beeswax to benefit dry skin. The amount of royal jelly is minuscule, but that's fine because it isn't a must-have ingredient for skin. |

But none of these vitamins or minerals appears to be unique to royal jelly, and there is much less published research on royal jelly than there is on propolis. Its antibacterial activity seems unlikely to be expressed when the food is ingested, yet that same antibacterial activity, along with other properties of the substance, make it a really desirable ingredient in topical preparations and skin creams.

Now a farmer just had to mix the right chemicals into the dirt, add seeds, and stand back to watch the crops grow. Faith in the power of chemicals to catalyze plant growth replaced agricultural husbandry and made both crop rotations and the idea of adapting agricultural methods to the land seem quaint. |

Interestingly, the urine may not turn purple until it's exposed to light for a while. Porphyrias produce many body signs, which range from light sensitivity and rashes to severe abdominal pain, mental confusion, epileptic seizures, and even paralysis.
SIGN OF THE TIMES
Several members of the British royal family suffered from porphyria. Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son King James I of England had the disease. |

Beeswax & royal Jelly Eye Creme ($12 for 0.25 ounce) contains a tiny amount of royal bee jelly (in powder form), but this ingredient, despite tempting folklore, has no established benefit for skin. It can cause contact dermatitis, though the amount of it in this product likely negates that possibility (Source: www.naturaldatabase.com). This is otherwise a boring moisturizer consisting mostly of plant oil, glycerin, and beeswax. It's an OK option for dry skin anywhere on the face. |

Bee Pollen, Propolis, and royal Jelly
Advocates of bee pollen can be their own worst enemies, claiming that bee pollen can cure everything from cancer to hangnails. But inflated claims aside, a significant body of literature shows that bee products—particularly propolis—do have significant and documented health benefits that help explain why they have been a staple in folk medicine and healing traditions for more than 2,000 years.
Bee pollen is a phenomenally nutritious and well-balanced food that can be consumed by people and domestic animals. |
