There is no lab test for rosacea. Instead, diagnosis is based on a visual inspection by a dermatologist who is familiar with the spectrum of symptoms. Early signs of rosacea include a flushing or redness in the cheeks, chin, nose and/or forehead that comes and goes. Over time, this redness persists for increasingly longer periods until, eventually, it is always present. Fine, dilated blood vessels may also appear in the face, and red bumps and pus bumps ("pimples") can develop as well. Sometimes patients may also experience a burning, stinging or itching sensation in the affected areas.
For the more than 40% of rosacea patients who develop the ailment in their 30s and 40s, this is a chronic disease, so they will have to deal with it for years. Some of the afflicted first seek treatment after age 50. Reason for the delay: Research has found that 78% of Americans are not aware of the symptoms of rosacea, and therefore, many people tend to ignore the problem until symptoms become advanced.
Someone who has ocular rosacea may feel as though there is a foreign body or something gritty in his/her eyes. He may also have feelings of burning, stinging, itching or dryness similar to eye allergies. ENVIRONMENTAL TRIGGERS Once rosacea has been diagnosed, the next step is to begin identifying any environmental factors that may be triggering outbreaks. Your doctor might ask you to keep a diary recording foods consumed and other daily details, such as your exposure to light, heat and wind.. .stressful events or situations.. .and what skin-care products you used.

HERBALISM Some herbalists consider a chronic skin condition like rosacea to be \ "\ f / indicative of an underlying dysfunction of the whole body. As such, one M \/ approach is to prescribe general body cleansers or alternatives to detoxify and increase the body's processing and elimination functions. Burdock root: The use of burdock root tincture or tea on a daily basis can help to detoxify the body, especially when it is paired with approaches that promote regular bowel movements in order to improve elimination.

They are especially unsafe if you've been having facial peels; using Retin-A, Renova, AHAs, or BHA; or are taking Accutane; or if you have naturally thin skin ot any skin disotder such as rosacea, psoriasis, or seborrhea. Biore claims this product can pull an entire blackhead plug out of the skin. It can't. If you could grab a blackhead out of the skin, your skin would be left with an empty hole (and there is nothing in this producr that will close it up), but that's not what happens.
It would be an excellent choice for those battling redness from rosacea. Not only are such mineral-based sunscreens extra-gentle, but also the amount of coverage they offer (when combined with pigments) will tone down excess redness—assuming you choose your shades carefully. Clinique hit a stumbling block in regatd to shades, however. Although there are some great choices among the 12 options, Porcelain Beige, Warm Golden, Sand, and Nutty are too pink, rose, peach, ot yellow to recommend, so choose carefully.
It is recommended for sensitive skin that is normal to dry or struggling with rosacea. S© $$$ Daily Protective Moisturizer SPF 15 ($36for 1.7ounces) combines zinc oxide with other sunscreen actives, including 0.5% avobenzone (which is interesring because, as of this writing, these actives are not permitted for combined use by the FDA, although they are routinely combined in sunscreens sold outside the United States and a proposal is pending that may grant such a combination stateside).

It is also used topically and internally for skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and eczema to help calm the skin and reduce redness and irritation. Lavender has antibacterial qualities that contribute to its effectiveness in treating acne as well as minor cuts and scrapes. Lavender oil can be applied to burns and insect stings. The astringency helps to reduce pain and inflammation. A tea can be taken for headaches or diluted lavender oil can be used to massage the temples or body to ease tension in the muscles. Lavender has also been used for mild depression.

Oregano oil: There are many volatile oils in oregano with a variety of antibacterial and antifungal effects, which may account for its ability to improve symptoms of rosacea. A drop or two of the oil can be massaged into the affected skin once or twice daily. However, given that the skin of the face is often delicate and sensitive, it may be more tolerable to apply a cream or ointment that incorporates oregano oil. Any topically applied essential oil has the potential to cause dermatitis, so discontinue use if any redness, swelling, itchiness, or pain develops.

If left untreated, ocular rosacea can lead to corneal damage and impaired vision. DANGER SIGN Seek medical attention immediately if you have bloodshot eyes along with any of the following signs: severe headache, blurred vision, mental confusion, nausea and vomiting, or seeing halos around lights. You may be having an attack of acute glaucoma (a sudden increase in eye pressure), which, without prompt treatment, can lead to blindness. YELLOW EYES Having red eyes is one thing, but when the whites of our eyes turn yellow, it may conjure up images of aliens or the devil.
Watery eyes can also be a sign of rosacea, the skin condition that can cause your eyes and skin to turn red. (See Bloodshot Eyes, above, and Chapter 9.) Or they can signal more serious conditions such as a blocked tear duct, a nasal polyp, or Graves' disease. (See Bulging Eyes, above.) Dry Eyes When our eyes don't produce enough tears or our tears contain chemicals that cause them to evaporate too fast, we wind up with dry eye, which usually affects both eyes. People with dry eye often complain of eyes that feel sandy or scratchy.
Red ears may be red flags for ear infections as well as such skin diseases as psoriasis or rosacea. (See Chapter 9.) They can also signal a condition, aptly named red ear syndrome, in which one ear typically becomes red, hot, and sometimes painful. Various seemingly innocuous triggers—such as touching your ear, turning your neck, chewing, sneezing, or Auditory nerve Cochlea EAR ANATOMY coughing—can set off red ear syndrome, which primarily affects children and young adults. But regardless of age, it's often associated with migraine headaches that affect the same side as the red ear.
But a red nose can be a red flag for rosacea, a condition in which the skin becomes abnormally reddened. (See Chapter 9.) And sometimes it's a telltale sign of alcohol abuse. Alcohol causes the blood vessels near the skin surface to dilate, giving the skin a reddish hue. A BULBOUS NOSE Most of us view a big, red, globular nose as a sign of alcoholism, and we may be right. However, an equal number of teetotalers have this condition, which is medically known as rhinophyma but is commonly referred to as bulbous nose. The late comedic actor W. C.

However, the -Cut-,scrape-,and bruise-free carcinoid flushes usually last for only about 20 to 30 seconds and may be followed by a bluish tinge; the rosacea flushes persist for much longer. And unlike other types of flushes and blushes, during a carcinoid flush the face becomes beet red and is covered with the characteristic marks of telangiectasia. Other signs of carcinoid syndrome may include shortness of breath, wheezing, cramps, and severe diarrhea. Unfortunately, by the time these signs appear, the cancer is usually quite advanced and has spread to the liver.

These mineral sunscreens have almost zero risk of causing irritation, which is what someone dealing with facial redness or rosacea should be considering. Because this sunscreens base formula is listed in alphabetical order (which is within FDA regulations because it is an over-the-counter drug, not a cosmetic), the relative amounts of the different ingredients are not as clear as when ingredients are listed in descending order. However, it does contain fragrance—another faux pas for an "ultra-calming" product—and lacks antioxidants.

Studies show that the digestive system in some patients with rosacea has low amounts of both stomach acid and of the pancreatic enzyme lipase. Take 2-4 pills containing these digestive enzymes with each meal. Betaine hydrochloride improves stomach acidity and digestion, especially of proteins. Take 1-3 capsules with each meal, but reduce the dose if you experience a warming or burning sensation. Topically, sea buckthorn can be applied to the skin in the form of oils, salves, balms, or lotions to treat acne, burns, dermatitis, eczema, infections, rosacea, and wrinkles. In fact, after the disaster at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Russia, sea buckthorn oil was used to treat the burns of people exposed to the leaked radiation. Sea buckthorn can also be used to prevent sunburn and radiation burns; Russian cosmonauts, for example, have used this herb to protect their skin against radiation burns when in outer space.

Acupuncture: This is an effective treatment for rosacea. The acupuncturist will insert needles in your face and other parts of your body to reduce the heat and to remove stagnated blood and energy. The treatment will take one to three months on a twice weekly basis. You may notice a change after a couple of treatments. Your acupuncturist may advise you to stop using antibacterial medication and cream. Acupressure: Pressing the Yin Tang, Ying Xiang, Quan Liao, Di Cang, Hegu points can be effective. The Yin Tang point is located in the depression midway between the eyebrows.
Alcohol and sunbathing are common triggers that worsen the flushing associated with rosacea. Stress reduction techniques can benefit the condition as can adhering to an anti-inflammatory diet that excludes processed foods, dairy, and sugar. Topical treatments: Azelaic acid is based on a natural plant and can be very helpful when applied topically as a cream at a 20% strength. Topical metronidazole (known as MetroGel®) is a mild treatment that can be applied once daily at a strength of 1%. This is used by itself or after a course of antibiotics.

These include metronidazole 0.75% gel (including MetroGel as well as other brands)...azelaic acid 15% gel (Finacea)...and sulfacetamide-sulfur (including Rosac, which also contains SPF 18 sunscreen, and other brands). Sulfur-based prescription cleansers such as Plexion and Rosanil can also be helpful. Metronidazole gel is an antibiotic—but it is prescribed here for its anti-inflammatory properties rather than its antibiotic effects.

One small, preliminary report suggested that fasting followed by a vegan diet (allowing no animal flesh foods, dairy products, or eggs) had only small and inconsistent effects on rosacea.3 Lifestyle changes that may be helpful Sun exposure, stress, excessive exercise, and extreme temperatures (hot or cold) of weather or bathing water may trigger flare-ups of rosacea, so avoiding these conditions is recommended.4 Nutritional supplements that may be helpful Azelaic acid is found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley and is used topically in a 20% strength cream.
A topical preparation of retinaldehyde (a prescription form of vitamin A [page 595]) may be effective in treating people with mild rosacea. In a small, preliminary trial, women with rosacea used a retinaldehyde cream (0.05%) once daily for six months.14 Inflammation was improved in most participants, and blood vessel abnormalities responded in about half the people after six months. Controlled research is needed to confirm these effects. Retinaldehyde cream is available by prescription only and should be used only under the supervision of the prescribing physician.

Your fat also manufactures testosterone, so if you are a woman and your hair is thinning, you also probably have insulin resistance. Want some motivation to get your hair back?
