If your body produces lasting pain for no apparent reason (not caused by an injury), before drawing any other conclusions, you should interpret this as the body's cry for water and its attempt to remedy an unbalanced condition. Prescription pain medication suppresses the body's primary signal of dehydration. Pain killers "short-circuit" the body's emergency routes for water supply; they also sabotage proper waste elimination and sow the seeds of chronic illness.
There is enough documentation to show that pain medications may have fatal side effects. |

Because asthma is caused by many factors there is no single remedy for it. The most effective treatments will be different for everybody. Do not dismiss an idea in the following chapters because you do not think it will work for you. Keep an open mind.
Note: We have chosen to include in this book descriptions of some treatments that appear to have limited effects when treating asthma. They are here because alternative practitioners may recommend them to their asthmatic patients, and thus asthmatics may wish to find out more about them. |
| Dr Schachter made it clear in his results that Vitamin C was by no means the most effective agent that could be used for reducing bronchospasm, but it is a beneficial natural remedy with limited and minor side-effects.
Scientific studies may provide evidence in favour of Vitamin C, but there is also a huge weight of anecdotal evidence from the public. Many people take Vitamin C supplements and say how the number of colds and bouts of flu they catch have lessened since taking Vitamin C. |
| The herb was known elsewhere in the world: the American Indians used liquorice as tea, as a cough remedy and as a soothing elixir for the throat. It is used today for all kinds of chest complaints, including asthma, and it is also has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it especially beneficial for asthmatics.
A most beneficial healing herb when used in moderation, liquorice can be harmful if used in large amounts and should not be taken by people with high blood pressure problems or those using digitoxin-based drugs. |

| Which remedy is selected depends on the particular condition, for instance whether it is bronchial asthma, nervous asthma, if it is accompanied by fever, is worse in the evening or in an overheated room.
The relevant symptoms are best assessed by an experienced practitioner. It is advisable, therefore, that you consult a naturopath or homeopath for a proper diagnosis. Tissue salts at low potencies are available from reputable health food stores but higher potencies can be obtained from practitioners. |

He was unimpressed:
Bushofius a Minister of the Gospel at Batavia in the Indies, went too far, when he recommended the Moxa to his Countrymen in Europe, as an infallible remedy for gout. I have reason to apprehend that many a patient in Germany found himself disappointed in his expectation ...35
This was a clear criticism of laymen who transgressed the increasingly well-defined boundaries of medicine. |
| Urgency and, as Temple put it, 'obstinacy' and 'sullenness' with Europe's elite scholastic medicine drove him, albeit unwillingly, to try a new remedy which had come his way. T never thought it would have befallen me to be the first that should try a new experiment... being little inclined to practise upon others, and as little that others should practise upon me.'15 And experiment he did—but his 'sullenness' extended even to the most unusual wares of the European medical marketplace. |
| But if an external and local remedy like moxabustion could effectively cure so complex a disease, then surgeons—who, after all, specialized in external and local treatments?could rightly claim a commercial and intellectual stake in one of the most important and paradigmatic diseases of their day. Neither group had much success in creating an effective or accepted therapy. However, their attention and efforts may have had an effect on patient attitudes towards the disease and its cure, by rendering more visible the degree of medical uncertainty and debate that surrounded gout. |
| But many doctors and Chirurgeons are like to condemn this remedy as new and unknown, and so render it suspected among their patients?' Busschof's alter ego called upon the value of experienced relief to disarm this straw-man: 'The effect will soon silence you, and convince you of envy and ignorance [on the part of the protesting medical men].'
Busschof accompanied his sharp critique of western medicine's 'arrogance' and resistance to change with some censure of medicine in Asia. |

Ginger {Zingiber officinale), a natural remedy obtained from the root of the ginger flower that is used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of inflammation and rheumatism, is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties. There is no evidence that the ginger contained in supplements is superior to fresh ginger from the grocery store or ginger tea. Ginger has no side effects, so if you want to use it there are no reasons not to. |

Eisai went so far as to claim that tea was a remedy for almost all health problems.
Eisai's confidence in the healing properties of tea was soon put to the test. A government official who was in danger of dying from the ill effects of gluttony asked Eisai to pray for his recovery. Rather than trusting this man's fate solely to the power of prayer, Eisai directed the official to drink tea that Eisai himself had cultivated and prepared. After the official recovered, Eisai gave him a copy of his book, and the official became a strong tea supporter. |

Although a fixture of orthodox medicine in Asia, her technique—subsequently called moxabustion in the West—clearly sounded harsh to European ears: 'to tell you the truth, it was done by a way of Burning: which means being by me rejected out of an apprehension I had of the pain that must needs to accompany such a remedy.... I could not then resolve upon it'. Horrified, Busschof sent the healer away; her treatment might be good enough for native slaves, who were anyway hardened to it, but it was unsuitable for more civilized and sensitive European bodies. |

Peter began treating Harry by giving him a remedy he made for the Flaviviridae virus, which Peter believed was largely responsible for CFS. The remedies he was using at that time were meridian complexes, that is, they were modeled after Peter's earlier work exploring the meridians, although his spiderweb diagram had revealed that the group of twelve compartments had a specific sequence that deviated from the order specified in traditional Chinese medicine. The liquid remedies were taken, as the new Infoceuticals are now, as drops in a small glass of water. |
