Media giants want to criminalize personal copying of movie DVDs to portable electronic devices

In my opinion you are doing nothing wrong if you own a movie on DVD and rip it to other player formats such as playstation portable, iPod video, cell phone video, or any other video format. Of course, if you go out and rent movies, and then rip them, then you are in fact doing something wrong, because you don't own that movie, you're just renting it. When you return the movie for rental, you should delete the files. In other words, you should only have those alternate files for as long as you have paid for the right to be in possession of the DVD.

Toxic Childhood: How the Modern World is Damaging Our Children and What We Can Do About it

Nevertheless too much viewing, or too long on the playstation, mobile or Internet are still not recommended - suggested time limits for various ages are given in Chapter 9, but parents should use common sense in applying these in their own children's circumstances. Chapter 9 also points out the importance of monitoring what children watch on TV or do on their computers - and shared experiences of technology can, of course, be another focus for conversation.
On return, he completed his homework before setting off to swimming club; then, after a hasty family supper, he was allowed an hour on the playstation before bed. Other evenings, weekends and holidays were similarly filled to bursting point with extra tuition, clubs, music lessons and special outings - with no time left over for unstructured play or simply 'chilling out'. On one occasion the poor child had a few minutes spare between appointments and his mother seemed to panic: she eventually filled the gap by asking him to entertain me by turning somersaults.
Eventually she admitted she'd got her son a copy too, 'because all his friends have it' - as a playstation virgin she had no idea what the game involved. ... and puppy dogs' tails The yearning for acceptance by the group is just as strong in boys as in girls, and the reliance on brands to make them acceptable may be even greater - in a recent survey, 75 per cent of boys said they like to wear clothes with popular labels, as opposed to 67 per cent of girls. However, the definition of'cool' is different.
Ryu Murakami, novelist and film director, has pointed out the almost certain connection between hikikomori and 'gizmos like the new Sony playstation, which comes equipped with an Internet terminology and a DVD player ... [and] inevitably fixes people in their individual space'. But national anxiety about the phenomenon has not in any way dimmed enthusiasm for virtual existence. Psychiatrist Satoru Saito, who researches the condition, relates it to a more general withdrawal into social isolation: 'I fear Japan itself is becoming hikikomori. It is a nation that does not like to communicate.
Increasingly too, children become involved in virtual friendships on the Internet, through chatrooms and instant messaging on websites, such as the CBBC and playstation sites. Children often value these types of chat as ways of making easy non-face-to-face contact (ideal if you're shy or socially isolated) and keeping in touch with friends. As they tend to be much more chat-sawy than their parents - nearly twice as many online teenagers use instant messaging as online adults - parents may feel technologically left behind.

Neuros MPEG4 Recorder does what it promises to do well, but there's room for improvement

REPPED: If you own a playstation Portable (PSP), or any other personal portable media device, you've probably discovered that one of the main challenges is finding a way to get video onto the device. How do you rip your movie collection, for example, to a format that can play on the PSP? The PSP is a really capable portable movie player. It's not just a gaming machine -- although it's very good for games -- it's also a great way to watch videos when you are away from your home entertainment system.
The interface is clunky and the remote needs some improvements, but overall, if you're just looking to rip some movies to your playstation portable, this is a solid product. It does what it promises to do and it doesn't even require a PC. Just don't expect it to go beyond ripping videos for portable video devices. I give this device three stars, and I hope to be able to give it more stars in the future as the product continues to improve.

The iRiver PMP-100 series: A product with the typical strengths and weaknesses of Korean technology

The Sony playstation portable, or PSP, is in many ways a better video player, although it has its own limitations, which will be covered in another review. For now, keep your eyes open for new products. Personally, I would stick with products made in Japan, including products from Apple, Creative or other companies that have a good reputation for quality control. For the time being, I recommend that everyone avoid any products made by iRiver, other than their IFP 700, 800, and 900 series MP3 players and recorders, which are, as I've said many times before, outstanding MP3 devices.

DVD copy warnings, movie studio paranoia, and the effort to turn customers into criminals

I've ripped DVD movies into "avi" files and the converted them to "mpeg4s" so I could watch them on my playstation portable. If that makes me a criminal, then there's something wrong with our criminal justice system. I've paid for all this content; I bought the DVD. I paid for the music album; I just want to enjoy them on my own terms. I think somebody should manufacture a DVD player that will actually allow you to fast-forward through all the garbage that movie studios put at the beginning of their DVDs. That would be a great DVD player. It could be called the "Total Control DVD Player.
