According to the American Plastics Council, products that may contain the chemical bisphenol A include: hard, clear plastic baby bottles hard, clear, sometimes tinted, plastic water bottles hard, clear plastic bowls, tableware, storage containers liners inside food and drink cans dental sealant to prevent cavities electronic equipment sports safety equipment medical devices pet carriers spray-on flame retardants
There's more to this story, too -- not only is it toxic, it could affect your child's metabolism. |
| REPPED: Before you decide to chew on the cap of your water bottle because you're nervous, make sure the plastic you are chewing on isn't full of carcinogens and chemicals -- even though lobbyists for the plastics industry argue that any traces of the toxic substance bisphenol A are low and therefore, insubstantial.
Bisphenol A, or BPA, is found most commonly in polycarbonate plastics. According to the Bisphenol-A. |
| Avoid storing food in plastic containers. Instead, choose Pyrex or class containers (stainless steel is also acceptable). Also avoid using plastic sandwich bags or plastic wrap products, wherever possible.
Remember that if you are pregnant or nursing, BPA chemicals are passed through your bloodstream directly to your baby. |
| Bisphenol A is an industrial chemical used primarily to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, both of which are used in countless applications that make our lives easier, healthier and safer, each and every day."
But the Environmental Working Group states, "BPA is an ingredient in plastics and the epoxy resins that line food cans. Low doses of BPA lead to a range of health problems, including birth defects of the male and female reproductive systems in laboratory animals. |

However, I do not recommend using distilled water that has been stored in plastic jugs, because the plastic contains xenoestro-gens, substances that mimic the effects of the hormone estrogen, which may be a carcinogenic risk. The plastic also imparts a plastic flavor to the water. I also do not recommend using municipal tap waters that contain chlorine, fluoride, and other components that should be avoided.

The bottles used to package bottled water are almost always made from plastics containing bisphenol-A (BPA), a carcinogenic chemical that often leaches into the water and gets swallowed by consumers. Click here to read our articles on BPA, a chemical widely believed to contribute to certain cancers. This contamination factor, however, is true for all products stored in plastic bottles, not merely water. Sports drinks, sodas, fruit drinks and even "healthy" smoothie drinks packaged in plastic all share a common risk of BPA contamination. |

But, if we can create options, let's say for example you're manufacturing plastic, you can make that plastic out of cornstarch cheaper than plastic. It's environmentally friendly, it degrades in the environment and there's no pollution. This is where it's going in big business over the next 20 years. I think everybody in his or her heart knows that we can no longer exploit the planet. We have to do everything we can to live in harmony, to plant trees, to create a peace. Cut a piece of plastic 1 to 2 inches larger than the folded flannel sheet.
3. Soak the flannel sheet in gently heated castor oil. Fold it over and squeeze until some of the liquid oozes out. Unfold.
4. Prepare the surface where you will be lying. Place a large plastic sheet and an old towel over the surface to prevent staining.
5. Lie down on the towel and place the oil-soaked flannel sheet over your abdomen. Place the fitted plastic piece over the flannel sheet. Apply a hot water bottle over the area.
6. Wrap a towel under and around your torso.
7. Rest for 1 to 2 hours.

Our children play with plastic toys each with varying levels of toxicity. We drink our beverages out of plastic bottles. We brush our teeth using plastic toothbrushes generously dappled with one of the most toxic substances known to humankind — sodium fluoride, otherwise known as fluoride. We've been told that fluoride is good for our teeth. Not so. It is a known hazardous, poisonous, toxic waste by-product of the aluminum, phosphate fertilizer and other industries. |

Many guacamole dips don't even contain avocados.
7. plastic food packaging is a potent health hazard. Scientists now know that plastics routinely seep the chemical bisphenol A into the food, where it is eaten by consumers. Cooking in plastic containers multiplies the level of exposure. Bisphenol is a hormone disruptor and can cause breast formation in men and severe hormonal imbalances in women. It may also encourage hormone-related cancers such as prostate cancer and breast cancer. See Plastics chemical bisphenol A found to promote prostate cancer in animal studies.

The best thing to do is to avoid plastic altogether. (Side note: Baby bottles made from polycarbonate plastics have quietly disappeared from the market despite industry assurances that polycarbonate plastics are safe.)
There are two approaches to take to avoid exposure to BPA. First, if you are active and take water with you, switch to a stainless steel water bottle. But, be careful. Many products on the market are lined with an epoxy finish. This defeats the purpose. Make sure that the bottle is stainless steel both inside and out. |
| Water Bottles
As stated in earlier chapters, you should be drinking a lot of water, but please beware of plastic water bottles. Plastics made from polycarbonate resin can leach bisphenol-A (BPA), a potent hormone disruptor. BPA, a chemical found in epoxy resin and polycarbonate plastics, may impair the reproductive organs and have adverse effects on tumors, breast tissue development, and prostate development by reducing sperm count.
BPA can leach into water bottles through normal wear and tear and exposure to heat and cleaning agents. |
| This includes leaving your plastic water bottle in your car during errands, in your backpack during hikes, and running it through your dishwasher or using harsh detergents. What's more, a 2003 study conducted by the University of Missouri published in the journal, Environmental Health Perspectives, found that detectable levels of BPA leached into liquids at room temperature. This means just having your plastic water bottle sitting on your desk can be potentially harmful. The best thing to do is to avoid plastic altogether. |

While the mechanisms underlying these changes remain elusive, it is known that synapses are less plastic in the aging or diseased brain. Loss of plasticity in the hippocampus, where short-term memories are stored, causes the forgetfulness common in older people.
Armed with this new understanding, the researchers then identified magnesium's importance in synaptic function. Magnesium is the gatekeeper for the NMDA receptor, which receives signals from an important excitatory neurotransmitter involved in synaptic plasticity. |

Whenever possible, avoid distilled water bottled in plastic. Distilled water is "mineral hungry" and tends to draw substances including plastic into itself. plastic mimics estrogen (the female sex hormone) inside the body. Trinity Springs Water is my personal favorite commercially available bottled spring water even though I am other than excited about the plastic bottling. Other spring waters (such as high-end Grander water) bottled in glass are great.

My main complaint about the product is that it's made of ABS plastic. It won't survive being run over by a car, nor is it waterproof. plastic can break if it gets crushed, and I can imagine that if somebody cranks the dynamo handle too aggressively at the wrong angle, they could break that off, too. I would have much preferred to manufacture a product made of stronger materials such as aluminum alloy or even titanium. But guess what happens to the cost? Instead of a $39 device that everyone can afford, you'd end up with a $300 device that almost no one could afford. |

He demonstrated the molecular basis of learning, and even more broadly, he had demonstrated the plasticity of the nervous system.
So plastic are our brains that research over the last decade has shown that at least some part of the brain is capable of growing new neurons, which for a century had been thought to be impossible. Scientists had believed that the regenerative capacities of our bodies did not extend to the central nervous system—the brain and the spinal cord. The immutability of the brain was one of the central dogmas of neuro-science. |

What could have eaten through thick plastic pipes like that?" I asked.
He answered, "Well, I can't be sure. Pretty strong acids must have been there. We also know that benzene dissolves plastics. But we will never know. Every time we would come in to sample a spot, the guys from the plant would know we were coming and would tell us where to look."
"What happened then?" I asked. "That must have been a little unnerving."
He sighed and nodded. "Yep. Well, the next day we went out to drill new wells, right where our old one had dissolved. But we couldn't. |
