Today, the FDA approved Lybrel, a daily pill for women that stops periods... forever.
The concept behind such a pill is based on the false idea that menstruation is a disease requiring a medical fix. Most sane people would agree that menstruation is, in fact, a natural biological function and not a disease. So why take a pill to stop it?
If you ask the women taking this pill, it's because their periods are extremely painful or inconvenient. Taking Lybrel to stop the period is a typical Western-mindset approach to all ailments: Mask the symptoms and ignore the cause. |

In fact, in the A Coronary disease Trial Investigating Outcome with Nifedipine (ACTION) study, the calcium channel blocker nifedipine did not prevent heart attacks or chest pain (angina) any better than did a placebo, or sugar pill.7 A meta-analysis of all studies combined showed that treatment with calcium channel blockers did not improve mortality more than a placebo, although ACE inhibitors did. |

It's not an overnight solution like the seductively easy Lybrel pill, but it is a far wiser and more wholesome solution that honors your body rather than hijacking its natural functions. Chemical are not the answer to your health problems. They are merely seductive, harmful synthetic substances that will inevitably produce harmful side effects.
If you think your periods are painful today, just imagine the emotional pain of being diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoing chemotherapy that nearly kills you and having a mastectomy. |
| If you ask the women taking this pill, it's because their periods are extremely painful or inconvenient. Taking Lybrel to stop the period is a typical Western-mindset approach to all ailments: Mask the symptoms and ignore the cause. Painful periods have a cause, mostly related to hormone imbalances caused by poor nutritional habits, lack of exercise and exposure to toxic chemicals in foods, medicines and personal care products (which contain hundreds of hormone-disrupting chemicals). |

DHEA
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is marketed as an antiaging pill, which, thanks to some fancy footwork in Congress (the DSHEA, or the Dietary
Supplement Health and Education Act, as explained earlier), is available over the counter. DHEA declines with normal aging. Since DHEA blocks the effects of stress hormones like Cortisol and has a protective effect on neurons in animal models, it has been described as an antistress and antiag-ing hormone. DHEA, since it is a precursor of testosterone, is being used by athletes to build muscle mass, but it is not very effective for this purpose. |
| So rather than take a pill that has dubious potential benefit and definite risk, type 2 diabetics who smoke would benefit more from quitting cigarettes, exercising, and losing weight. Such behavior modifications would help their diabetes as well as dramatically cut their risk of heart disease. I recognize that none of these changes are easy to make, but they are lifesaving and life-extending. |
| Asthma patients can also be treated with steroids in pill form for a short period of time. Corticosteroids can inhibit growth in children and decrease bone-mineral density, although growth inhibition is reversible. Steroids also suppress the immune response, increasing the risk of infection, and decrease bone-mineral density. Other side effects of steroids include low blood sugar, changes in state of consciousness, nausea, seizures, or, in rare cases, death. |
| And I do understand that changing behavior is not easy; the temptation to take a pill to solve a problem is very appealing to many of us. Yet you know what I am going to say: Excess weight is not a "genetic" problem; it is not possible for genes to account for such a dramatic change in obesity in the country in such a short period of time. The only logical explanation is the rapid shift in the amount and kinds of food we eat combined with a lack of exercise. The only lasting, healthy solution for weight loss is to eat less and move more. |
| The placebo response is essentially how much better you do if you take a pill that you believe helps you, even if it really does nothing in terms of its actual effect on your body. At the end of the study the "blind" is removed, and the doctors look to see if the drug was better than the placebo in improving the symptoms of the disease or preventing some predefined event, like a heart attack. The company must conduct at least two studies showing that the drug is better than the placebo. |

| This isn't some prescription drug where you take one pill in the morning and one pill in the afternoon. That can't compete with the disease-promoting diets most people pursue. You have to take these pills like foods. Some days I'll take 6 or 8 or even 10 of these pills. And other days I'll take none and just focus on the superfoods powders. But you can eat these like food. We can actually live on these superfoods. They are foods, they're not medicines. So don't treat them like medicines. |

The Contraceptive Pill
There is also clinical evidence, though admittedly no strong study, to support the idea that the contraceptive pill can cause food intolerances. This may be due to the fact that the hormones in the pill affect certain liver-detoxification enzymes, thereby making a woman more susceptible to the negative effects of toxins in foods and from the environment. The pill also depletes vitamins (B vitamins, vitamin A) and minerals (zinc, magnesium, manganese, and iron) and tends to increase copper levels. |

Similarly, capsules are often seen as more effective than tablets, and even the size, shape, and color of a pill can play a role. In a study designed to determine the suggestive value of a pill's color, researchers found that people tend to view yellow or orange pills as mood manipulators, either stimulants or depressants. Dark red pills are assumed to be sedatives; lavender pills, hallucinogens; and white pills, painkillers.22
Another factor is the attitude the doctor conveys when he prescribes the placebo. Dr. |

Bio-identical progesterone can be administered as a cream, a pill, a capsule, a gelcap, drops under the tongue, or a suppository. Fortunately, for those who don't like taking pills, topical creams have been shown to be the most effective way of administering bio-identical progesterone. If you take bio-identical progesterone in a pill, it must first go through the liver to be metabolized. Some of the active substance is automatically excreted in the feces. The remaining progesterone must be metabolized into more than thirty-five biochemical substances before it can enter the bloodstream. |

The FDA further states "three well-controlled trials in pediatric patients with MDD failed to show that the drug was more effective than placebo (sugar pill)." 19
The other mind-altering drug 16-year-old Baadsgaard had been prescribed is Effexor, both an SSRI and SNRI (selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Inc. |
| The only difference between Lilly's mind-altering Prozac and its mind-altering Sarafem is the color of the pill. Lilly apparently at least thought it appropriate to change the color of Prozac from green to the very feminine pink and lavender. The chemical name of Prozac's active ingredient is fluoxetine HCl, and the active ingredient in Sarafem is fluoxetine HCl.
During an interview in April 2001, I asked a representative of Eli Lilly to explain the difference between Sarafem and Prozac. |

But if you take many forms of the famous "Pill," you're not doing something all that different. The gifted chemist Carl Djerassi based his development of the pill on just this kind of botanical birth control. He wasn't using clover, though; he was using sweet potatoes—the Mexican yam to be exact. He started with disogenin, a phytoestrogen produced by the yam, and from that base, he synthesized the first marketable contraceptive pill in 1951.
Yams aren't the only source of phytoestrogens in the human diet. Soy is rich in a phytoestrogen called genistein. |

The drug company only has to prove that the drug is statistically significantly better than placebo (sugar pill). Usually the outcome is quite marginal and usually most of the studies don't show an improvement over placebo. This fact was made clear during the February 2004 FDA hearings."
Recall that in February and September of 2004, the FDA held hearings to establish whether the SSRI class of drugs was causing self-harm and violent behavior in children. |

The drug approval agency concluded that, after careful consideration of pharmaceutical-company-supplied clinical trial data, the majority of clinical trials the agency reviewed revealed that the psychiatric mind-altering drugs are no more effective than a placebo (sugar pill) in treating the alleged stated mental disorder. An unknown number of the adolescent population is being prescribed mind-altering drugs that are neither safe nor effective.
Okay, let's recap. |
| Would it not seem logical to assume that if, in fact, a neurological "chemical imbalance" exists and is the actual cause of an alleged psychiatric disorder, that the results of the "treatment" —the increase of brain chemicals—would be far superior to a sugar pill? |

When my son was two years old, we were developing a line of pill capsule vitamins, and there was going to be a series of about 14 pills that you'd wind up taking every day -- sometimes twice a day.
Mike: Wow, that's a lot.
Kunin: It's a lot; it's a burden. It puts your body through digestive stress. There are tremendous difficulties for people to absorb their nutrients out of pills. Tablets are the worst. Capsules are a little bit better, but it's still quite a stress to go through the process and hope that you're getting something out of those nutrients.
Mike: Yes. |
