Maca is from peru. Known as the superfood of the Inca, it's been around for perhaps 10,000 years. When we first went to peru 15 years ago, there were only two acres of maca left in production, so it was virtually extinct. Maca is now well known as an endocrine modulator, or an endocrine adaptogen, working on the pituitary through the hypothalamus, communicating with all the glands of internal secretion, the whole endocrine system. |

Heridas y Hemorragias

Does the cocaine go back to peru? I actually emailed Coca-Cola and asked them this every question. So far, I've received no response other than, "Hold on, we'll reply as soon as we're done snorting..." and I have no idea what that means.
Anyone who has actually been to peru, by the way, knows that coca leaves are frequently chewed by Peruvian natives (and the ancient Incas, of course) to aid in altitude sickness and enhance stamina. It's what helps a 110-pound Peruvian male wearing leather sandals sprint up a 14,000 foot mountain carrying the 80-pound pack. |

Because of maca's function on the endocrine, a lot of people think that I'm a snake oil salesman when I start telling them about the many uses of maca, but the glands in the body are very basic to human function. |

| The enormous number of plant species used for the treatment of psychosomatic disorders indicates that the curanderos of Northern peru are valued specialists who are consulted mainly for these conditions. This is all the more interesting since Western medicine has still not found efficient treatments for psychosomatic disorders. The plant species used for "magical" disorders come mostly from the high Andes, especially from the vicinity of sacred lakes, since plants from those regions are regarded as especially powerful. |

| Plant Uses
A total of 510 taxa belonging to 250 genera and 126 families were registered in Northern peru. Of these, 504 could be identified, most of them to the species level. A detailed overview of all plants encountered, their scientific and vernacular names, and all uses, is given in the descriptive section of this book.
Four hundred thirty-three species (85%) were Dicotyledons, 46 (9%) Monocotyledons, 21 (4%) Pteridophytes, and 5 (1%) Gymnosperms. Three species of Giartina (Algae) and one species of the Lichen genus Siphula were used. |

Maca is a root vegetable, in the same family as turnips and broccoli, which grows at high elevations, native to the high Andean plateaus of peru. It has been used traditionally by native Peruvians as both a food and medicine. It has historically been used for a variety of purposes, including hormone balancing, thyroid function, sexual function, PMS, menopause, and as a tonic for healthy aging.
A recent study proved maca's effectiveness in treating women with amenorrhea due to hypoestrogenic states, and especially premature ovarian failure. |

The government of peru maintained tight control over its guano monopoly. American farmers frustrated over the rising price of Chincha Islands guano agitated for breaking the Peruvian monopoly. President Millard Fillmore admonished Congress in 1850 that it was the duty of the government ro ensure guano traded at a reasonable price. Entrepreneurs scoured whaling records to rediscover unclaimed guano islands where the stuff could be mined freely. After President Franklin Pierce signed rhe 1856 Guano Island Act, making it legal for any U.S. |

Our partner company in peru is led by an agricultural engineer that was trained in England -- he's Peruvian -- and he's become instrumental in going around to these agricultural families in all the different regions of peru and helping them convert their lands into organic farms so they can produce cacao, maca and other products for us. But, they own their own land, and we pay them a fair wage. Some companies will go in there and buy the land from people and then control the people more. We're into educating them and helping them develop the products and providing an economic source for them. |

The border region of Ecuador and peru is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world, and thus is a "biodiversity-hotspot" par excellence. Low passes in the Andean chain allow an easy exchange between the flora and fauna of the Amazon Basin and the Pacific lowlands. Additionally, the region is characterized by a rapid transition between the humid mountain forests of the Andes and the dry, deciduous forests and deserts of the Peruvian lowlands.
Considerable progress has been made in the overall taxonomic treatment of the flora of the country as a whole l1-2-34!. |

Because El Nino effectively reverses the Pacific's weather patterns - causing floods in Peru's Atacama Desert and droughts in Indonesia and Australia - it has knock-on effects (known as teleconnections) right across the planet. On the good side, the north-eastern US tends to experience mild winters, and increases in wind shear over the tropical Atlantic dampen down the Caribbean hurricane season. On the other hand, droughts in forested areas from Amazonia to Papua New Guinea spark devastating fires, whilst rainfall deficits also cause harvest failures and famines in southern Africa. |

| In most cases in Southern Ecuador, a "Western" altar without many power objects is employed, in contrast to Northern peru, where normally a "traditional" mesa is set up. This difference is rooted in the fact that traditional healing was illegal in Ecuador until the constitutional change of 1998. Additionally, traditional cures are often performed outdoors, either close to sacred lagoons or waterfalls, or at special ceremonial sites. |

Tomatoes: The Prostate's Best Friend
The tomato hails originally from South America, probably peru, where it still exists in the wild. Yellow in colour, and about the size of cherry tomatoes, Peruvian tomatoes were not, however, eaten by the Incas. |

In contrast, modern farmers in Peru's Colca Valley still use ancient terraces cultivated for more than fifteen centuries. Like their ancestors, they maintain soil fertility through intercropping, crop rotations that include legumes, fallowing, and the use of both manure and ash to maintain soil fertility. They have an extensive homegrown system of soil classification and do not till the soil before planting; instead they insert seeds into the ground using a chisel-like device that minimally disturbs the soil. |
| Comparison of ancient agricultural soils and uncultivated soils in New Mexico and peru shows that agricultural practices need not undermine societies. Soils at a site in the Gila National Forest, typical of prehistoric agricultural sites in the American Southwest, were cultivated between ad 1100 and 1150, at the peak of Pueblo culture, and subsequently abandoned. Soils of sites cultivated by the Pueblo culture are lighter colored, with a third to a half of the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus content of neighboring uncultivated soils. |

Of course, you could also come just for the chocolate, and you wouldn't be disappointed. But there's much more to see and experience here at the Raw Spirit Festival. |

When I was in peru in 2002, I visited the Lima water utility SEDAPAL's space-age buildings on the outskirts of town. Despite perennial funding problems, SEDAPAL's operations were humming along as normal, with huge undercover reservoirs, looking like Olympic swimming pools, channelling crystal-clear water to different parts of the city.
But SEDAPAL has a problem. The inland Cordillera Central, on which the river Rimac depends for glacial runoff, is lower than the more extensively glaciated Cordillera Blanca, with even the highest peaks barely crossing 5,500 metres in altitude. |
| Thompson pioneered the drilling of ice cores in inaccessible mountain regions, bringing back ice tens of thousands of years old from glaciated peaks as remote and far apart as Peru's Nevado Huascaran and Tibet's Dasuopu, often pushing himself to the edge of human endurance in the process. In 1993 Thompson and his drilling team camped for 53 days at 6,000 metres between the two peaks of Huascaran, perhaps setting a world record for high-altitude living. (I stayed there for one night in 2002 - one of the most freezing, wind-blasted and wretched nights of my life. |

The model lacks the detail to pick out changes at small scales in peru and the US, but according to a separate study, nearly 90 per cent of California's winter mountain snowpack disappears, cutting river flows in the south of the state (where Los Angeles and San Diego are located) by nearly half.
The role of underground aquifers is worth a closer investigation, because they are crucial in supporting cities and agriculture in dry areas. |
