N.D.s (naturopathic physicians). You want to help find the cure for cancer? Find it in your grocery shopping habits, in your food choice, and in your own body. Help those around you gain the knowledge to prevent these fictitious diseases, and do your part to stop poisoning your body with cancer-causing foods (like processed meats and most manufactured foods) and substances (like popular personal care products that contain cancer-causing fragrance chemicals). If you want to find the cure for cancer, just BE the cure for cancer. Go outside and get some sunlight.

You may wonder why I’m recommending n.d.s over traditionally-trained medical doctors. In this article, I’m offering some concrete answers on why you’re much better served visiting a naturopathic physician and what kind of differences in treatment you can expect. The first and most obvious difference between naturopathic physicians and classically-trained western doctors is that western doctors are primarily experts in disease, whereas naturopathic physicians are experts in health and wellness.

Some well-trained n.d.s may be good practitioners but still unlicensed simply because their state simply doesn't offer licenses. Some unlicensed people, however, might call themselves naturopaths even though their training is from brief correspondence courses. When choosing a naturopathic doctor the main question to ask is: Where did you graduate from? To be considered for a license n.d.s must graduate from an accredited naturopathic medical school, pass board-certified exams, and receive continuing medical education.

Training, however, is substantially different for n.d.s and M.D.s. While conventional physicians undergo four years of training as do naturopathic physicians, conventional physicians must also serve a minimum of three years of residency after medical school before they may practice. The additional three years plus passing required tests allow them to practice only general or family medicine. The practice of a medical specialty such as cardiology, oncology, or pediatrics, requires several additional years of study.
The AANP warns that some practitioners who advertise themselves as n.d.s obtained degrees in courses at unaccredited schools or through the mail, rather than at accredited institutions. Naturopaths are licensed in ten states in the United States (see box), but practice in at least twenty-eight additional states. To find a naturopath in your area, contact the AANP by phone (206 323-7610) or by mail (P.O. Box 20386, Seattle, WA 98102). AANP also maintains a World Wide Web site (www.infinity.dorsai.org/naturopathic.

D.s and n.d.s over the past decade with some improvement. After discussing her long history, I chose to treat her from a different perspective. Primarily, I gave her digestive nervines and tonic herbs like catnip, lemon balm, and tilia flowers. Within three days, she went from 11 stools per day to two per day. I A DIVERSITY OF HERBAL TRADITIONS There is a great diversity and richness in the various herbal traditions of the world, some of which still thrive today. Native American cultures contain a cornucopia of healing wisdom as do European traditions, from the Welsh to the Sicilian.
This includes assessing diet and nutritional status and providing counseling to the expectant mother when appropriate. Many n.d.s also work in conjunction with medical midwives. The Future of Naturopathic Medicine "To the uninformed, naturopathic medicine, as well as the entire concept of natural medicine, appears to be a fad that will soon pass away," says Michael Murray, N.D, of Issaquah, Washington, a leading naturopathic physician and educator."To the informed, however, it is quite clear that naturopathic medicine is at the forefront of the future.
Minor surgery: Current accreditation and state licensing statutes require all n.d.s to be trained in a variety of minor surgical techniques. These include laceration repair (sutures), skin biopsies, skin lesion removal, sclerotherapy for spider veins and varicose veins, noninvasive hemorrhoid surgery, abscess incising and draining, circumcision, and the setting of fractures. Natural childbirth and midwifery: The training naturopathic physicians receive enables them to provide pre-, peri-, and post-natal care in the states where they are licensed. As a result, increasing numbers of N.D.
Fever is often regarded as an undesirable symptom of illness, but n.d.s see it as the body's defense against invading organisms. Fever stimulates the immune system by increasing the production of antibodies and interferon (proteins released by white blood cells that combat a virus). Hyperthermia can also be used to remove fat-stored chemicals such as pesticides, PCBs, and drug residues from the body. Physical medicine: Physical medicine refers to the use of physical measures in the treatment of disease.
The current scope of treatments in which n.d.s are trained include: clinical nutrition; botanical or herbal medicine; homeopathy; acupuncture; hydrotherapy; hyperthermia; physical medicine, including massage and therapeutic manipulation; counseling and other forms of psychotherapy; minor surgery; and natural childbirth and midwifery. Clinical nutrition: The use of diet as a therapy serves as the foundation of naturopathic medicine.
Although naturopathic physicians emphasize therapeutic choices based on individual interest and experience, as well as the legal parameters of the state in which he or she practices, they maintain a consistent philosophy. All n.d.s have been trained in the basic tools of natural therapeutics and most work with diet and nutrition while specializing in one or more other therapeutic methods. After identifying which conditions in the patient manifest in illness, the naturopathic physician advises the patient on the methods most appropriate for creating a return to health.

Pregnant or lactating women should avoid heavy detoxification, though they can usually handle mild programs, which should be undertaken only with the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Licensed n.d.s can legally diagnose and treat illness, and can order diagnostic tests, including blood tests, X-rays, and ultrasounds. If you live in an area that licenses naturopaths you can use an N.D. as your primary care doctor, as well as an M.D. Otherwise only an M.D. can legally diagnose and treat disease. An N.D. often offers nutritional counseling or a nonprescription alternative for a chronic condition. In the case of a serious illness, such as cancer, naturopaths are trained to make referrals to M.D. specialists for conventional treatment.
To be considered for a license n.d.s must graduate from an accredited naturopathic medical school, pass board-certified exams, and receive continuing medical education. At the beginning of 1997 there were two accredited schools: Bastyr University in Seattle and the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. In addition, two schools were candidates for accreditation: Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Tempe, Arizona, and the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, Canada. D.s alike), we have some reservations. First of all, although progesterone administration has been the most common prescription for PMS by the medical community, controlled clinical trials have failed to consistently demonstrate the superiority of progesterone therapy over a placebo (there is a significant placebo response in PMS, by the way).
