Skin and mucous membranes Often overlooked, the skin and mucous membranes can be obvious sites for the expression of symptoms from celiac disease. The classic skin manifestation of celiac disease is a skin rash called dermatitis herpetiformis, often abbreviated DH. It occurs primarily in adults and is rarely seen in children before puberty. This skin rash is classically pruritic (itchy) and symmetrical and does not respond to topical creams and medications. The rash begins as flat, red lesions, which then progress to erythematous, fluid-filled blisters. |

Capsaicin is a sticky poison—it adheres to mucous membranes, which is why your eyes burned if you ever rubbed them after handling peppers. It's also why the heat from a hot pepper sticks around so long—and why water does nothing to cool the burn. Its stickiness acts to prevent capsaicin from easily dissolving in water. You're much better off drinking milk (but this is one time to pass o j on the skim!) or eating something else with fat in it—since fat is hydrophobic, it helps to peel the capsaicin away from your mucous membranes and cool you down. |

It's known for its soothing effect on inflamed mucous membranes. Licorice root, when mixed with water or used in cough drops, soothes mucous membranes like those found in the throat, lung, and bronchial tubes. (When I was a kid, my mom would give me Smith Brothers licorice cough drops at the first sign of a cough.) According to the Materia Medica, licorice root is also used for urinary tract irritation, adrenal fatigue and exhaustion, immune-deficient states, allergies, liver disorders, and detoxification. |

Arnica preparations should not be administered on mucous membranes, eyes, or damaged skin.
Frequent administration, in particular of the undiluted tincture, as well as with contacts with the plant, lead to sensitization. Prolonged topical administration on damaged skin, e.g., in injuries or ulcus cruris (indolent leg ulcers) may cause eczema and edematous dermatitis with the formation of pustules. Arnica preparations may cause cardiac arrhythmia, tremor, dizziness, and collapse when used internally at doses higher than those recommended. |

Cats eating niacin-deficient diets develop "black tongue" hemorrhagic diarrhea, anemia, and reddening and ulceration of the mucous membranes of the tongue and mouth. If this inadequacy is not corrected, emaciation and death eventually occur. Humans face similar diseases if their diets are vitamin B-3 deficient.
Vitamins-as-Prevention
How did the modern diet become so deficient in certain nutrients that we can no longer scavenge adequate amounts? Food processing would seem to be the chief cause, although depletion of soil nutrients may also be implicated. |

As an antiseptic and as an anti-inflammatory for inflammations and sores of the mucous membranes, these two herbs have been very reliable and may go a long way not only toward improving the health of the epithelial tissue of the mouth and genital region but also stimulating an immune response locally in that tissue.

Additional Botanicals. Many botanicals have the ability to provide immune support through various mechanisms. Other plants have very specific antiviral properties as well. |
| Because of its potential irritating and inflammatory effects on the urinary tract mucous membranes, uva-ursi is best used in combination with other botanicals. It is not safe for use by pregnant women and unknown whether or not it is safe for lactating women. |
| It is thought that gynecological conditions associated with bleeding may occur as a result of poor tissue tone of the mucous membranes, poor uterine tone, and a constitutional weakness of the tissues that presents as generalized lack of tissue integrity, in this case the uterus. The astringents (herbs that slow the loss of body fluids, i.e., menstrual bleeding) are the herbs most likely to affect tissue tone, while the uterine tonics and the emmenagogues (herbs to promote menses) are most likely to affect uterine tone. |
| Vitamin A and beta-carotene enhance the immune response in epithelial tissues and thereby help mucous membranes resist infection. Vitamin A and beta-carotene can be used orally to enhance the immune response, and vitamin A can be used intravaginally to stimulate the local immune tissue of the vaginal mucosa. Vitamin A in a capsule can suffice, but vitamin A suppositories are available in higher doses than a standard capsule. Vitamin A intravaginally is useful in cases of infectious vaginitis as well as allergic and irritant-induced vaginitis. |

Vitamin E protects the mucous membranes and can increase resistance to bacterial and yeast infections. Vitamins B6 and B5 stimulate the immune system,- a vitamin B6 deficiency is associated with depletion of white blood cells in the thymus, spleen and lymph nodes and lowered antibody production. Combinations of various vitamins with omega 3 and omega 6 oils regulate inflammatory reactions in the body.
Vitamins A and D also improve the digestive system, stimulate bowel function and help rid the body of any build-up of toxic matter. |

There are five categories of cancer: Sarcomas affect the connective tissue, muscles, and bones; carcinomas affect the skin, glands, organs, and mucous membranes; lymphomas affect the lymphatic system; leu-kemias affect the blood; and myelomas, which are very rare, affect the plasma of the bone marrow.
Many different forms of treatment are available depending on the type of cancer, including chemotherapy, drugs, radiation, nutritional support, and immune system stimulation and support. |

They are involved in turning the food we eat into energy,- they help build up specific parts of the body, especially the red blood cells, enzymes and fatty acids,- they play an important role in growth of bones, teeth, blood vessels, and maintaining these (plus the skin and mucous membranes of the body) in good health.
Some vitamins have antioxidant roles, which means they protect vulnerable fatty acids from being destroyed by free radicals in the body. Free radicals are formed by oxidation processes (natural chemical reactions) and by radiation. |

Vomiting, bloody diarrhea, colic, and kidney irritation follow the intake of toxic dosages (0.6 to 1 g), and then increased diuresis that progresses to anuria. Lethal dosages (starting at 2 g) lead to convulsions, paralysis and, if untreated, to death through circulatory collapse. The treatment for poisonings should proceed symptomatically following gastric lavage. |

The drug is used to treat depression, disorders of the mucous membranes, hemorrhoids, herpes, painful kidney disorders, (in particular inflammation of the kidney and an increase in urination), liver disorders, poorly healing wounds and pruritus. The herb is used as a supporting treatment in various carcinomas. It is used both internally and externally to treat pains in the joints.
The efficacy of Scarlet Pimpernal in the treatment of these conditions has not been proven. |

If you swallow your medication (as opposed to inhaling it, injecting it, or applying it to skin or mucous membranes), it's broken down in your gastrointestinal tract, just like the food you eat. It is then absorbed into tiny blood vessels (capillaries) that line your intestines, and ends up in a large vein that carries that blood to the liver. Here it's broken down by enzymes into harmless end products. The newly altered drug molecules pass out of the liver and are eventually distributed by the circulation throughout the body, where it does its job. |

"I'd like the grilled chicken breast with sauteed vegetables, please." Most people would be proud of themselves for ordering that dish instead of a hamburger and fries. Unfortunately, it's not as healthful as you might think. As the vegetables are heated, precious enzymes and vitamins can be reduced or destroyed; they are no longer living sources of energy. | You should not let AHA or BHA products come in contact with the eyes, eyelids, or any mucous membranes. It is also possible that you may have an irritation reaction or sensitivity to AHAs or BHA. Slight stinging is expected, but continued stinging is not; if the stinging continues, stop using it. Ditto for persistent redness.
FACIAL MASKS: Many facial masks contain claylike ingredients that absorb oil and, to some degree, exfoliate the skin, which can be beneficial for someone with oily skin. |

Since asthmatics have generally poorer, or more stressed, immune systems than non-asthmatics, and frequently have over-stimulated mucous membranes, you do need to ensure that your vitamin intake is sufficient to heal, not just to keep the status quo. Review your diet and take a long hard look at just what your body is absorbing. Are you getting enough vitamins and nutrients? Are they the right ones for you? Will they help your asthma? |

This is also important in rapidly-developing cells such as epithelial cells in skin and mucous membranes. This change of a cell to a more specialized cell is called differentiation. Many of the important effects attributed to vitamin A appear to result from its role in cellular differentiation.
Vitamin A in the form of retinoic acid is essential for fetal development. Retinoic acid is needed for the formation of the heart, eyes, limbs, and ears of the growing fetus. Not only that, but retinoic acid is used to regulate the expression of the gene for growth hormone. |

Extended skin contact with the freshly-harvested, bruised plant can lead to blister formation and cauterizations which are difficult to heal due to the resulting protoanemonine, which is severely irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. If taken internally, severe irritation to the gastrointestinal tract, combined with colic and diarrhea, as well as irritation of the urinary drainage passages, are possible.
Symptomatic treatment for external contact consists of mucilaginosa, following irrigation with diluted potassium permanganate solution. |
| Frequent contact with the drug can trigger allergic reactions of the skin and the mucous membranes ("druggist's asthma", the allergen is a glycoprotein).
OVERDOSAGE
Higher dosages of the drug (1 to 2 gm) have a nauseant effect (therapeutically used as an emetic). Toxic dosages can lead to mucous membrane erosion in the gastrointestinal tract, tachycardia, drop in blood pressure, cardiac rhythm disorders as well as to disorders in respiratory function and possibly to convulsions, states of shock, and coma. |
