Another study describes cancer patients who took 35-70 mg of the maitake extract called D-fraction, and 4,000-6,000 mg of maitake mushroom powder per day. This is equivalent to taking 25 commercially available maitake mushrooms pills at a cost of about $3 per day. Tumor regression and svmDtom imorovement was recorded in 1 1 of 15 breast cancer patients, 12 of 18 lung cancer patients and 7 of 15 liver cancer patients, and pain reduction was noted in 83% of patients taking maitake extract and raw powder. | Mike Adams, the Health Ranger See article keywords and concepts | We're known for a variety of medicinal mushroom products, particularly two: The SX-Fraction and the maitake D-fraction.
Mike: Do you do any work with reishi mushrooms?
Kaylor: Yes, we certainly use reishi. You can't be a mushroom company and not work with ganoderma. It is really the heart and soul of not only of medicinal mushrooms, but of holistic. We could talk for hours on what the reishi mushroom is capable of doing and what it can be used for. It's interesting, I was actually just in Hong Kong doing a lecture on medicinal mushrooms for cancer treatment. | | With certain chemo agents, the maitake D-fraction actually seems to potentiate the activity of the chemo agent, so it may kill more cancer cells than it would without it. Some of the other mushrooms, particularly the reishi mushroom that you mentioned, are incredible mushrooms to use to really protect yourself from the damage associated with these processes.
Unfortunately, chemo and radiation are not as selective as we'd really like them to be. So having something that's going to boost the body's overall immune function is certainly going to be useful. | | The site is www.maitake.com.
Mike: Thank you very much, Mark, for taking a few minutes here.
Kaylor: Thank you. It's been a pleasure, I appreciate it. | | Mike: Is maitake Products your company, then?
Kaylor: Actually, I'm a consultant with the company; I'm responsible for education and training. I do lectures for them. I have my own private practice and work primarily with late-stage cancer patients. I also work with individuals who have what I call the "unnamable" or "untreatable." These are people with problems that Western medicine has not named, or "it's just all in your head," or they have a name for it but they have no treatment for it. Those are the people I end up working with, mostly. | | Kaylor: Yes, definitely, with our maitake D-fraction, we actually have a couple of clinical trials done in conjunction with chemotherapy treatment. We've found out a couple of things. One is that it decreased the negative side effects of the chemo agents by roughly 90 to 95 percent. So the decrease is in hair loss, pain, nausea, vomiting and less of a decrease of red and white blood cells. All the things we associate with and are afraid of when we talk about chemo and radiation therapy significantly improved. | | Kaylor: Well, I think the whole maitake mushroom has some mild anti-inflammatory effects. I think the reishi mushroom in particular is a very potent anti-inflammatory, particularly for just general inflammation in the cardiovascular system and inflammation that may be associated with the respiratory system, like asthma and bronchial problems. There are clinical studies done showing reishi is very effective for treating bronchitis, which is inflammation of the bronchioles. So that's very specific. | Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S. See book keywords and concepts | In fact, maitake is approved by the Japanese government for just this purpose. It's especially good for counteracting the toxic effects of radiation and chemotherapy, such as extreme fatigue and nausea. According to my friend Robert Roundtree, M.D., author of Immunotics, maitake extract can shrink tumors in mice; Roundtree also points out that a number of studies in Japan showed that maitake and chemotherapy together can boost the effectiveness of standard chemotherapy for several types of cancer. | Bill Sardi See book keywords and concepts | In 1998, maitake Products received FDA approval for an Investigational New Drug Phase II pilot study of maitake mushroom extract in the treatment of advanced breast and prostate cancer.
Dietary mushrooms and cancer
There is also some evidence that the consumption of mushrooms in the diet may ward off cancer. A 15-year study of 174,505 mushroom farmers in Japan concluded that mushroom intake reduced the cancer death rate from 160 per 100,000 non-mushroom farmers to 97 per 100,000 among the growers of these fungi. | Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S. See book keywords and concepts | In addition to being loaded with vitamins, maitake has a special polysaccharide component called beta-1,6 glucan, a very close relative of the beta-1,3 glucan in the shiitake (see below). Beta-glucans stimulate the immune system. Many of the compounds in the cell structures of mushrooms are actually classified as HDPs—host defenses potentiators. They're used as adjunctive cancer treatments throughout Asia. In fact, maitake is approved by the Japanese government for just this purpose. | Hyla Cass, M.D. See book keywords and concepts | Cancer patients may also wish to investigate medicinal mushrooms (such types as reishi, shiitake, cordyceps, maitake, agaracus, and coriolus) as immune-boosting companions to chemotherapy. These medicinal mushrooms are sources of antitumor and immunity-modulating polysaccharides (a type of carbohydrate) that have been extensively researched. Formulas containing concentrated extracts of medicinal mushrooms are available; talk with your oncologist about which he or she might recommend.

See book keywords and concepts | Lentinan is also referred to as beta-1,3 glucan, a polysaccharide that has potent immune-stimulating effects, and a close relative of the beta-1,6 glucan found in maitake (see above). When beta-glucans bind to immune system cells like natural killer (NK) cells, T-cells, and macrophages, the activity of these cells is increased. No one is quite sure why, but Roundtree speculates that the beta-glucans "trick" immune system cells into thinking they're under attack (mushrooms are, after all, fungus, and maybe the cells think the harmless little critters are dangerous. For generations, okra has been a staple of traditional Southern cooking. This nutritious green vegetable arrived in the United States in the mid-1600s and became an important part of the colonial diet. Its seeds were even used to brew a coffee substitute that was consumed by Southern Americans during the Civil War, when they couldn't obtain coffee beans. | Bradley J. Willcox, M.D., D. Several leafy plants such as jiaogulan and holy basil have been cooked as potherbs, like spinach.
Not all plant parts can be eaten. Reishi and eleuthero are hard and woody, and the dried fungus or wood is inedible to say the least. Cordyceps mushrooms need to be cooked to kill any harmful bacteria. Ashwagandha leaves are toxic, and he shou wu fruit has been reported to be poisonous. | | Herbal Adaptogens
A good example of this is seen with the immune system-enhancing mushroom known as maitake. Researchers studied several polysaccharide fractions and claimed that one specific fraction was the most active. However, when they combined the fraction with an extract of the whole mushroom, the activity was increased by more than 80 percent. A reductionist pharmacological way of looking at herbs often doesn't work.
Another example of this problem comes from German research on hawthorn, an herb used as a nerve and cardiovascular tonic. | Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S. Shiitake
The shiitake mushroom is one of the most widely cultivated specialty species of mushroom in the world and is deeply valued for its medicinal effects as well as for the fact that it tastes delicious. It contains enzymes and vitamins that do not normally appear in plants, like all eight essential amino acids and one of the essential fatty acids, linoleic acid. The caps contain more nutrients than the stems. | | The three specific types with the greatest health benefits are maitake, Shiitake, and Reishi. When you think about it for a minute, it makes an awful lot of sense that mushrooms have medicinal properties. Mushrooms are fungus. They scavenge on organic matter. Where do you find them?
