Instead of the pita, substitute water- and fiber-rich romaine lettuce leaves. Wash two large romaine leaves, spread a thin layer of hummus on one of them, add some sprouts and thinly sliced cucumber, place the other leaf on top, and then roll up the leaves and hummus like a jelly roll. You just made a hummus sandwich that contains fewer calories and more water and fiber than a pita sandwich.

Black tea comes from leaves that have been fermented before being heated and dried. Green tea leaves are steamed before drying, but not fermented, producing a greenish-yellow brew that tastes closer to the flavor of a fresh leaf.
Fight heart disease with green tea. Food synergy is most certainly at play with the many cardiovascular benefits linked to green tea. Consider this: Antioxidants make up a third of the weight of dried green tea leaves. And one of these antioxidants is EGCG, which was shown to slow the buildup of artery-clogging plaque in mice in a recent study. |

The average American consumer uses close to 100 toxic chemicals before she even leaves the house in the morning. Many of those chemicals are encountered in the morning during showering, shaving, skin care, hair care and application of cosmetics. Other chemicals are encountered in breakfast foods, including bacon, sausage, processed milk, breads and other processed foods. By the time the average consumer leaves their home in the morning, they've already poisoned their liver, pancreas, kidneys, heart, lungs and brain. |

Steeping fresh leaves in very hot (not quite boiling) water makes green tea, which inactivates oxidizing enzymes and leaves intact polyphenols, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties in animal models. Based on this evidence, many consider green tea to be healthful, and many Japanese drink large quantities of it. Green tea extracts sold as supplements in the U.S. are promoted as having cancer-prevention properties. One study that examined the risk of stomach cancer in Japanese men found that drinking green tea conferred no protective effect. |

As of now, the standard myth feeds into an extremely negative and deterministic view that can be summed up in the popular image of "loss of self" and "the death that leaves the body behind." In addition, this view treats aging persons technically, as if they were computers with malfunctioning hardware, and leaves the caring process vague and undeveloped while implying that nothing will get better until a technological fix comes along. |

Normal metabolism also leaves acid residues in the blood that need to be buffered.
If the amount of potassium-rich fruits and vegetables eaten is not sufficient to produce enough alkalinity to buffer blood acids, the body has the ability to remove calcium from bones. This calcium helps neutralize the blood, but leaves the bones depleted in calcium. This increases the risk of osteoporosis.
Increasing the amount of potassium-rich fruits and vegetables in the diet helps to preserve calcium in bones. |

Cleaning is a survival issue," Janine explained. leaves need to stay free of debris in order to feed themselves with the sun. Oaks have devised an excellent strategy: their leaves are covered with tiny hairs that work like fine bristles to keep debris off the pores underneath. The "hairy leaf strategy" could be borrowed for human products such as clothes or buildings. "Instead of making buildings with little hairy buffers, we think about sandblasting them once they get dirty," Janine reflected. "We don't think preventatively, but these organisms do. |

She did not know the name of the plant, and although I was familiar with the leaves, I did not know what kind of plant it was nor did anyone else I asked. It hung in my garden all summer and in the late fall
I brought it in and stood it in a planter in my living room. Shortly after Christmas it began to bloom clusters of small red flowers.
My old Siamese, Ben, had been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism shortly before Christmas and was on drugs to control this disease plus another medication to lower his heart rate. |

The fats that we used to consume as recently as fifty years ago came from animals that fed primarily on grass and leaves. Remember that carnivores get most of their micronutrients by consuming the fatty organs of their grass-eating prey, a fact critical to understanding this second innate drive to find fat. It would have only been in this fat that our ancestors obtained the fat-soluble vitamins necessary for their health. (This is why later you will see that I recommend eating beef that has grazed on grass, not been fed corn in a feedlot. |
| Vitamin C, also found in green leaves, is essential to rebuild collagen breaks in your blood vessels and skin. The sun's rays cause wrinkles, which are one kind of collagen break. (Add vitamin C to your face cream and those wrinkles vanish, or at least diminish.) Vitamin C is also essential for recharging other vitamins, including beta-carotene, which becomes a pro-oxidant without vitamin C's help. (Pro-oxidants are the bad guys; antioxidants are the good guys. |

Other hospitals have run into the same problem when they implemented similar integrated care programs for such conditions as pneumonia, diabetes, and heart failure. That leaves hospitals looking for profit where they can, and providing care that loses money only when they must.
Langbaum offered the example of a program at Hopkins for cochlear implants, a $2c,ooo device that is implanted in the skull and can restore hearing to some deaf patients. The cochlear implant program is not profitable, because many insurers don't yet reimburse the hospital for the device. |
| Even when physicians win their cases, going through the ordeal of a malpractice suit leaves many emotionally shaken and filled with distrust for their patients. Their malpractice-insurance premiums may go up, and every time they renew their licenses, they must register the fact that they have been sued and explain what happened. As one physician blogger responded to the Sprague case, "What is the moral of the story? Order an expensive test and save yourself the trouble."
The other reason physicians commonly offer for ordering so many unnecessary imaging tests is that patients demand them. |
| That leaves only two people in the entire hospital who may know what's happening to the whole patient. If you come in for surgery, one of those two people might be your surgeon, except for the fact that surgeons are often far too busy to keep tabs on what all the other specialists are doing to their patients. If you're lucky, your primary care physician takes time off from his office schedule to make regular visits to the hospital and check up on you. (Some hospitals have begun to hire "hospitalists," primary care physicians who rotate in shifts to watch over the care of specific patients. |
| That still leaves the question of how to get research that we need done. In giving the industry increasing responsibility over the years for funding clinical studies, says John Abramson, we have granted it the power to leverage the direction that medical research takes. "The primary mission of medical research has been transformed," he says. "It used to be all about gathering information to improve health. Now, clinical research is aimed at gathering information that will maximize return on investment. |

Completely digesting the average meal, from the time the food enters the body until the waste leaves, can take hours or days depending on the type and quantity of the food (for example, pork is more difficult to digest then chicken, and chicken is more difficult to digest then watermelon). For all practical purposes though, if we are eating two to three meals a day, every day, then we are in a constant state of digestion. That is, every minute of every day our digestive system is working hard at breaking down foods, delivering nutrients, and expelling waste. |
| Our body will always supply the energy our digestive system needs to benefit from the food we have eaten, no matter how little that leaves for other systems. Perhaps you have experienced this when, after a large meal, it takes all the energy you can muster just to stay awake. That energy demand robs all other systems of the body of the vital energy they need to keep up.
Thus it should not surprise us to learn that when we eat cooked and processed foods, especially when we overeat, our immune system actually becomes less active. |

Because of the number of cases of Bovine Spongiform Encaphalopathy (BSE) in the United Kingdom, and the nearly ninety cats who have died from the feline form of this disease as of March 2002, certain materials derived from beef have been banned for use in pet food. |

Wild animals low in the pecking order have to work harder to get food and usually settle for the worst parts of the kill or the least nutritive leaves. Both factors increase the level of oxidative stress on the system, just as smoking does to humans. (In simple terms, oxidation is caused by free radicals that "rust" your body, much as metal degrades when exposed to oxygen.) Ultraathletes also exhibit high levels of oxidative stress.15 If your autopilot detects heightened oxidative stress, it perceives you as an unsuccessful animal, harboring genes that are not worth passing on. |

Buy a bag of triple-washed, ready-to-go spinach leaves, and a quick salad can be yours at a moment's notice. Every time I make scrambled eggs or an omelet (with omega-3 eggs), I toss in a bunch of raw spinach. It's easy! If you aren't ready to go 100 percent spinach salad, mix some spinach greens with whatever lettuce you prefer. You'll be halfway there!

The reason why inclusion of green smoothies produces such positive health changes appears to be due to the high-speed blending of whole green leaves. A blender thoroughly ruptures the plants' cellular structures, making all nutients available in significent quantity and in readily usable form for digestion. Chewing alone cannot achieve this level of efficiency.
The Roseburg experiment demonstrated that regular consumption of green smoothies can significantly improve health in a relatively short period of time. |
