If you have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) you may not be a star hockey player, but you certainly don't have to surrender your capacity to have a full and joyful life.
What Is IBD?
IBD is the collective name for two diseases in which the intestines become deeply inflamed: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Unlike irritable bowel syndrome (IBS—see page 230), in both forms of inflammatory bowel disease there is active pathology in the tissues. |

A more serious condition not necessarily resulting from IBS is inflammatory bowel disease, which causes ongoing inflammation of the intestines and includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. inflammatory bowel disease affects fewer people and tends to be hereditary.
Notable with IBS is the fact that it is strictly a functional disorder, with no identified structural defects. Though IBS sufferers often seek medical help and rarely require hospitalization, the symptoms can significantly interfere with normal daily activities. |

RESULTS: Histology demonstrated lymphocytic colitis in the autistic children, less severe than classical inflammatory bowel disease. However, basement membrane thickness and mucosal gamma delta cell density were significantly increased above those of all other groups including patients with inflammatory bowel disease. CD8(+) density and intraepithelial lymphocyte numbers were higher than those in the Crohn's disease, LNH, and normal control groups; and CD3 and plasma cell density and crypt proliferation were higher than those in normal and LNH control groups. |

INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE
There are two common types of inflammatory bowel disease. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the colon (large intestine) and rectum. Poor eating habits (diets high in fat and processed foods), food allergies, viral or bacterial infection, and genetic makeup may be possible causes of colitis, though there are no clear, defined causes. The symptoms include severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea (usually with blood and mucus) and sometimes fever. |

How you interact with these bacteria and what bacteria actually grow determine whether you develop inflammatory bowel disease.
Healthy bacteria in the bowels are your partners—essentially, a part of you. When you develop inflammatory bowel disease, it's because your body failed to tolerate these healthy bacteria or other proteins in your intestines.
If you got IBD because of bacterial overgrowth, your bowel contents were contaminated by either invasive bacteria from food poisoning (E. coli, S. typhi) or unfriendly bacteria that grew wildly because of bad diet. |

Licorice also is of significant benefit for people with irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis). Most inflammatory bowel diseases are autoimmune in nature, so this herb's ability to reduce excessive immune system response plus its anti-inflammatory effects makes it a good choice for people with irritation, inflammation, or ulceration of the gastro-intestinal tract caused by these diseases. It is a prominent remedy for gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, ileitis, and leaky gut syndrome (hyperpermeability). |

| Factors that may elevate your risk for developing colon cancer include: having polyps or inflammatory bowel disease, pre-existing cancer in another part of the body (particularly the breast), and having relatives with a history of colorectal cancer. A significant rise in the risk of colon cancer occurs for both males and females after age 35.28 It's estimated 1 in 26 women (compared to 1 in 27 men), will suffer from the disease at some point in their life.29 The biggest risk factor however is the amount of daily toxins to which you expose yourself. |
| Colon hydrotherapy may not be suitable for people suffering from severe hemorrhoids, malignant polyps, active inflammatory bowel disease, or active Diverticulitis.
During a colonic hydrotherapy session, a therapist helps the client gently insert a small plastic tube called a speculum a few inches into the rectum. The speculum is attached to a plastic hose connected to the hydrotherapy machine. Then, warm, purified water enters the body and will slowly and gently begin to cleanse the colon. |

As a child, I had watched my father suffer through a constellation of what I have since learned were autoimmune illnesses: inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and leucopenia. By the time my father was forty-two years old, he could barely walk a step without wincing with joint pain, and his bowels were continually inflamed. He died without warning one August morning following routine abdominal surgery to remove inflamed parts of his duodenum. I was twelve. |
| Other studies show that vitamin D can be protective against not only multiple sclerosis but inflammatory bowel disease. According to Mullin, 75 percent of Crohn's patients are deficient in vitamin D. There is growing evidence that vitamin D plays a central role in rebalancing T-cell activity, which is why it is proving to be such an important adjunct to the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as MS and Crohn's disease. |

It has become well accepted, says Mullin,
"that gut bacteria help drive inflammatory bowel disease and inflammation, and over the past decade an increasing number of studies indicate that by changing the mix of bacteria, probiotics may help patients with these autoimmune diseases of the gut significantly."
The human gut is full of bacteria—most of it beneficial. But lacking a complete set of these healthy bacteria can interfere with food digestion and fighting off illness and inflammation. |

According to a study in the Journal of Alternative Medicine, aloe vera juice can be effective for treating inflammatory bowel disease. In this study, ten patients received 2 ounces of aloe vera juice three times a day for a week. After one week, 100 percent of them were cured of diarrhea. Four had improved bowel regularity. Approximately one-third of the patients reported feeling increased energy, probably because they were doing so much better. |

Normally, the body's natural response to injury, irritation or invasion would never lead to such extreme illnesses. However, our modern environment bombards us with stresses that trigger the inflammation response too often. |

People with a history of liver disease or abnormal liver function, diabetes, peptic ulcers, gout, cardiac arrhythmias, inflammatory bowel disease, migraine headaches, or alcoholism are more susceptible to the adverse effects of excessive nicotinic acid intake. Doses of 3000 mg or more per day are potentially dangerous therapies and must be supervised.

Yogurt has been favorably associated with helping to reduce the risk of the following conditions: certain cancers, allergies, lactose intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, certain kinds of ulcers, diarrhea, and vaginal and urinary tract infections. Obviously, making nonfat or low-fat yogurt a regular part of your diet is a smart decision. But there's even more reason for people trying to lose weight to include yogurt in their diet. Most of us know that yogurt, as a dairy product, is rich in calcium. |

Unlike irritable bowel syndrome (IBS—see page 230), in both forms of inflammatory bowel disease there is active pathology in the tissues. If you have IBD, a biopsy of your tissue would come back with visible, active inflammation, which would not be the case in irritable bowel syndrome. |
| A high-fiber diet is highly recommended for both types of inflammatory bowel disease, except when there is an active flare-up, during which you might have to go easy. The problem is that a lot of people associate high fiber with wheat, grains, and cereals, which may be exactly what you don't need. A good idea would be to increase fiber as much as possible from vegetables, seeds, nuts, and even fiber supplements like psyllium husks. (You might want to lightly steam or cook the vegetables if eating them raw is a problem. |
| Several research studies have significant improvement in people with inflammatory bowel disease who were put on probiotics. Vitamin D deficiency is common in people suffering from intestinal malabsorption. The Cedars-Sinai website gives vitamin D supplements a three-star rating (their highest) for Crohn's disease, meaning there is reliable and consistent scientific data showing a health benefit.

COLITIS
DIAGNOSIS
Colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease where a superficial inflammation of the large intestine results in ulceration and bleeding. It is often mistaken for irritable bowel syndrome as the symptoms are similar. It affects men and women equally, and usually starts to manifest itself between the ages of 15 and 40. The condition goes in cycles, with alternating periods of few or no symptoms, followed by periods of frequent stomach pains and diarrhea mixed with blood. |

With regard to inflammatory bowel disease, an extract of the gum resin of Boswellia serrata provided symptomatic improvement in patients with ulcerative colitis in a nonrandomized, open trial (Gupta et al, 1997).
Anti-Asthma Effects: Boswellia was effective in treating asthma in one study (Gupta et al, 1998).
Antifungal Effects: The essential oil extracted from Boswellia serrata was reported to have some in vitro antifungal activity. |
| The primary uses of Boswellia serrata are in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease). precautions and adverse reactions
Possible adverse reactions include retrosternal burning, nausea, abdominal fullness, epigastric pain, anorexia, and dermatitis. Patients with pre-existing gastritis should be advised to use boswellia with caution as these appear to be the most common side effects associated with the use of boswellia.
