I believe that meat is not necessary for the human diet, except perhaps in the case of pregnant women who need extra iron and protein. In that case, the meat serves as a very high density protein and iron source that cannot be replicated from the plant world (iron from plants is molecularly different than iron from meats). But with prenatal nutrition, it's doubly important to have organic, free-range meat that's not contaminated with pesticides and heavy metals. |

Americans generally get plenty of iron, and supplementation of this nutrient may create an iron overload, which has been associated with increased risk of heart disease in males. There is some concern iron supplementation may actually increase oxidative stress.21
Manganese
Manganese taken in supplementation is very safe, although there are reports of people who develop manganese toxicity from their environment. This is usually seen in those who mine manganese or are exposed to high levels in the environment. These individuals may begin to hallucinate and become very irritable. |

EDTA chelation therapy, performed intravenously, can be used to remove heavy toxic metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, copper, iron, mercury, and aluminum. A special chelating agent, desoxyferramine, works well, specifically as an aluminum-chelating agent.
Homeopathic remedies will also remove aluminum from the body and the brain, according to Dr. Hodes. "Then you have to take orthomolecular nutritional therapy, intravenously or with intramuscular shots, along with oral supplements of all the nutrients."

| This process also happens with several of the heavy toxic metals, such as lead, cadmium, copper, iron, arsenic, mercury and aluminum. These chemicals and heavy metals, by affecting brain chemistry, affect the mind and behavior, so they must be removed. They need to be chelated out. . . . People can develop bizarre behavior and distorted thinking, along with warped perceptions, as a result of these toxic metals. Add to this toxic stew all the insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides that we ingest daily.

| When the sows leave their iron crates after four months of pregnancy, it is only to be driven and dragged into other crates just as small to give birth," according to Matthew Scully, author of the book Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy. "Then it's back to the gestation crate for another four months, and so on, for about eight or nine pregnancies, until they expire from the sheer punishment of it, or are culled as too sick and weak to go on."
And guess what? All this negative energy goes right into the meat that consumers swallow. |

There were specially designed baths filled with water and iron filings, into which projected large iron rods; there were hanging mirrors that were supposed to reflect back and intensify the invisible energy circulating in the room; and there was mysteriously unfamiliar music playing in the background behind a purple curtain. The music, produced by a new invention called the armonica, was not just there to help create a mood; like the iron filings and mirrors, it was supposed to act as a physical aid to the intensification and conduction of the animal magnetism. |

Vegetarians can't get enough iron. Yes, you can—as long as you're also getting enough vitamin C. Plant-derived foods provide plenty of iron. The catch: It's nonheme iron, which isn't as well-absorbed as heme iron, the kind found in meat. You can easily improve the absorption rate by pairing a nonheme iron source with a vitamin C source. At breakfast, for example, have a glass of orange juice (which is rich in vitamin C) with a bowl of hot wheat cereal (which supplies 9 milligrams of nonheme iron, or 50 percent of the Daily Value).

Family factors play an important role, and rates of RLS zoom in frequent blood donors who have an iron deficiency.
How this syndrome is treated depends mostly on how bad it is. But the first thing the doctor will do is check out the body's iron stores by testing ferritin levels. If these are low, he or she is likely to prescribe iron pills. The mainstays of treatment for RLS, though, are also treatments for Parkinson's disease or for epilepsy. Patients with RLS don't have either of these diseases, but the medicines used to treat them also greatly reduce the symptoms of RLS. |

I remember sitting in Nutrition 101 about 20 years ago and learning that vitamin C enhances the body's absorption of iron. If you eat vitamin C-rich foods like citrus fruits and leafy greens and pair them with iron-filled foods like lean meats and fish, you absorb more of the mineral. Chances are you've been doing this unwittingly for years, but thanks to relatively recent scientific findings, researchers are increasingly applying their intellectual muscle to studying this phenomenon of "food synergy. |

The ferruginous chocolate, so beneficial to women who are out of order, or have the green sickness, is prepared by adding to the paste of chocolate iron in the state of filings, oxide or carbonate. The simplest method, and one ptetty much in use, for having ferruginous chocolate in families, consists in dissolving good chocolate used in health in iron water, instead of making it in common water.10

My iron levels were a quarter of what they were ten years before; this is important because high iron levels are a risk factor for diabetes and heart disease. My cholesterol level was down to 185 mg/dl. A separate eye exam found that my intraocular pressure was just 10 in both eyes. All of these improvements showed my health to be normal, although I must remain vigilant because of my risk of redeveloping prediabetes.

Considerable research indicates that high iron levels are strongly associated with the risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.
Although copper is not as problematic as iron, do pay close attention to the zinc-copper ratio. Many people with diabetes have high copper levels relative to zinc. To offset this problem, your multimineral supplement should have at least fifteen times more zinc than copper, unless your doctor has diagnosed you as copper deficient. If you take more than 25 mg of zinc daily, add 500 meg to 1 mg of copper. |

A classic medicinal confection known as yogaraja was made by combining shilajit, prepared iron, iron pyrite, and silver, along with triphala, ginger, black pepper, pippali long pepper, plumbago root, and baberang seeds, with sugar and honey. This formula was used for people with anemia, tuberculosis, hemorrhoids, and weakness.
In Unani-Tibb (Greco-Arabic medicine), shilajit is known as momia or mumijo and is used internally as an antidote for poisons and to treat a wide variety of diseases. The hakims (healers) apply shilajit topically to swellings, arthritic areas, and bruises. |

Lashley became even more liberal with the curling iron, working through one part of the brain to the next, but still it didn't seem to have any effect on the rat's ability to remember. Even when he'd injured the vast majority of the brains of individual rats - and a curling iron caused much more damage to the brain than any clean surgical cut - their motor skills might be impaired, and they might stagger disjointedly along, but the rats always remembered the routine.
Although they represented a failure of sorts, the results appealed to the iconoclast in Lashley. |
