Aloe vera cures ulcers, ibs, Crohn's disease and Celiac disease Polysaccharides in the aloe vera plant have curative effects on numerous digestive disorders. The Internet is a storehouse of information and testimonials about aloe vera curing ibs, ulcers, Crohn's disease and other disorders of the digestive tract. This is one of the best-known applications of aloe vera gel.
Taking aloe certainly isn't a magic bullet cure, of course. It won't reverse your disease after drinking one glass of aloe vera gel. It needs to be used regularly. |

Although bran has been a popular way to manage Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) for about thirty years, there is no placebo-controlled study of bran in ibs that has shown any convincing beneficial effect. A study, published in 1994, found that while fruit fiber was helpful in ibs, bran only made the situation worse. Far from being a cure for ibs, the researchers found that it was the bran that was actually causing it! Bran also led to bowel disturbances, abdominal distension and pain. There is also a growing skepticism in the U.S. |

A more serious condition not necessarily resulting from ibs is inflammatory bowel disease, which causes ongoing inflammation of the intestines and includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Inflammatory bowel disease affects fewer people and tends to be hereditary.
Notable with ibs is the fact that it is strictly a functional disorder, with no identified structural defects. Though ibs sufferers often seek medical help and rarely require hospitalization, the symptoms can significantly interfere with normal daily activities. |

A subgroup of patients with ibs was distilled from the dyspepsia study group and was monitored for six weeks after the original study had ended. Of the ibs patients, 96 percent rated artichoke leaf extract as better than or at least equal to previous therapies administered for their ibs symptoms.
CURRENT PRACTICAL USES
The history of artichoke is a perfect example of science finally catching up to the longstanding traditional uses of a medicinal plant. |

| In most cases, the triggers and symptoms of ibs can be managed through a combination of dietary and lifestyle improvements along with consistent colon cleansing.
What are the symptoms of ibs?
Abdominal discomfort and bloating are the most commonly reported complaints, but a number of other symptoms are also regularly documented. Some people are chronically constipated and report straining to have a bowel movement. Some people experience diarrhea, which is on the opposite end of the "bowel movement spectrum," and still other people experience alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea. |
| Similarly, the symptoms associated with ibs can cause a person to feel depressed and anxious, so the cycle repeats itself.
Did You Know?
Serotonin is produced and stored within the cells lining the digestive tract. Current research suggests serotonin plays a key role in the motor-sensory and excretory functions of the digestive tract and that damaged receptor sites may contribute to the onset of ibs. In fact, "Serotonin is... a vital link in the brain-gut axis."13 Imbal-anced serotonin levels may therefore lead to increased abdominal discomfort and bowel movement difficulty. |

In both studies, subjects showed a decrease in ibs symptoms and reduced pain."7 ž"L. plantarum appears to help preserve nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, but also increase their content. L. plantarum has also demonstrated the ability to reduce and eliminate potentially pathogenic microorganisms both in vitro and in vivo."8 ž"In a 4-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 60 individuals with ibs, probiotics treatment with L. plantarum reduced intestinal gas significantly. |

Up to 20 percent of people have symptoms of ibs, such as abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, although less than half of them see a doctor for their symptoms. ibs is an elusive ailment, one I call a "trash basket diagnosis" because people who have GI complaints that don't match any specific diagnosis are often told they have the condition. Examples of symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation, gas, nausea, bloating, heartburn, excessive excretion of mucus from the colon, fatigue, some degree of anxiety or depression, and bowel urgency or incontinence. |
| Though ibs sufferers often seek medical help and rarely require hospitalization, the symptoms can significantly interfere with normal daily activities. If you are personally familiar with ibs, then you know very well how much it can put a damper on quality of life. There are many studies that conclude that the constant intake of food additives and the ingestion of pesticides, chemicals, and dyes can cause irritation to the intestinal tract and/or an imbalance of the intestinal microflora, resulting in inflammation or symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. |

| I have found that natural therapies for ibs have a very high success rate in both men and women. I'm confident that the benefits of a holistic approach using a healthful (high-fiber, low-sugar) diet, nutritional supplements that aid digestion (probiotics, enzymes and digestive herbal tonics) and stress-reduction techniques (exercise, prayer and counseling) far exceed the mild benefits of Zelnorm. And, of course, the drug's serious side effects would not be an issue using a natural approach.
In my opinion, Zelnorm is a waste of time and money and not worth the risk. |

This can be seen in the fact that patients with ibs have at least three distinct symptom patterns. A more definitive approach towards diagnosis and classification will lead to a better understanding and management. For example, it is unreasonable to assume that ibs characterized by diarrhoea would necessarily respond to the same treatment as ibs in which constipation predominates, yet many clinical trials make no attempt to evaluate therapy in terms of initial symptoms.
IBS is the most common but yet least understood gastrointestinal disorder. |

My personal "program" consists of digging around in my Garden of Youth and taking long walks. You may prefer meditation, yoga, or some other form of exercise.
A low-fat diet can help control ibs symptoms because fatty foods are hard to digest. Other foods and substances have been linked to ibs as well. |

Restoring Digestive Health
The good news is that if the general detox principles described in this book are used to lower the level of toxins in food, as well as the overall body burden of chemicals, this could help prevent as well as ease the symptoms of many chemically linked digestive system diseases. I now know many people who, just by going on my detox program, have been cured of their ibs. |

In a recent scientific paradigm shift, ibs is now becoming classified as an inflammatory bowel disorder—though whether it is autoimmune in nature and there are autoantibodies involved that attack the body tissue itself has not yet been fully investigated or answered. It is, however, says Mullin, a very good question to ask. |

Interestingly, this drug has the same mechanism of action as alosetron, the selective 5-HT3-receptor antagonist used in treating diarrhea-predominant ibs. So while tropisetron does not appear to be helpful for gastrointestinal pain, it may help widespread pain. If the drug company making this product can convince the FDA of its efficacy, it should become available for use by your doctor.

Dairy and grains appear to be the most common items linked to food sensitivities for those suffering with ibs (and, come to think of it, in the general population as well). These food groups don't necessarily cause classic food allergies, which is why conventional allergists tend to pooh-pooh their impact. That's because conventional allergy tests investigate a particular kind of immune response called IgE immunoglobulins, which will show up as a rash or otherwise make itself obvious almost immediately. |
| For instance, people with ibs showed "remarkable" improvement with the elimination of pineapple, citrus, cantaloupe, bread, pork, and cheese (not necessarily all for the same patient!). In another study of fifty-seven patients with asthma, fruits were the most common triggers and—combined with milk, beef, lamb, pork, fish, and grain products—were by far the most common cause of food-related asthma symptoms.

| What the Research Shows
The August 2005 issue of Phytomedicine published an analysis of sixteen clinical trials that investigated using 180 to 200 mg of enteric-coated peppermint oil in children with ibs or recurrent abdominal pain. Twelve of these trials were placebo controlled. Eight out of the twelve placebo-controlled studies showed statistically significant effects in favor of peppermint oil. The average response rate in terms of "overall success," meaning a reduction in symptoms, was 58 percent. |
