Although either herb adds a delicious flavor to a variety of foods, most often oregano or marjoram will be combined with garlic, onion, thyme, and basil, as these herbs have quite complementary flavors. QUICK SERVING IDEAS • Fresh oregano is a great garnish for your next slice of pizza. • Sauteed mushrooms and onions are brought to New life with marjoram and oregano. • Adding a few sprigs of fresh oregano or marjoram to a container of olive oil will infuse the oil with the essence of the herb. • Frittatas and omelets are well complemented by fresh oregano and garlic.

These clinical trials make sure that an herb's effects lie in the herb itself rather than in the wishful thinking (either positive or negative) of the researchers. Virtually all herbs have been investigated chemically to make sure they do not contain harmful chemicals. (Herbs that have not been investigated are not recommended in this book.) Companies also systematically test tens of thousands of plants as sources of compounds from which New drugs might be designed. The natural components of herbs can then be understood in the same terms as many manufactured medicines.
An example of an herb with a long onset of action is one of the most commonly used herbs in the United States, psyllium. This herb is used in dozens of over-the-counter products for the relief of constipation. Using psyllium powder results in immediate relief of constipation by increasing the bulk of stool, but at first it may also cause bloating and gas. This is due to the bacterial breakdown of indigestible fibers in the herb. Only over a period of one to three months do New bacteria establish themselves in the colon to digest fibers without releasing gas.
This serves to make the primary active ingredients of the herb more effective. It also helps to prevent the toxic reactions that lead to side effects. As a result, herbal remedies are more likely to correct bodily imbalances without creating additional problems. Sometimes individual herbs themselves can create side effects, but even the highly critical New England Journal of Medicine notes, "Untested herbal remedies are probably harmless. In addition, they seem to be used primarily by people who are healthy and believe the remedies will help them stay that way.
The "epidemic" of herb use is evident not only in North America and Europe, but also in China, Japan, Korea, and Latin America. Around the world, health-care practitioners are increasingly using herbs and other natural therapies alongside modern forms of treatment, with a renewed understanding of the body's own power to heal. The healing art of herbalism grew from hundreds of millions of personal healing experiences over centuries before the advent of scientific technology.
The renewed confidence in herbal medicine has also been made possible by the efforts of well-intentioned practitioners, manufacturers, and government officials who strive to ensure that the promises made on a label of an herb product are met by the product inside the bottle. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that the ingredients listed on a label are to be found in the product and that no medical claims be made for a product that cannot be scientifically substantiated. A growing number of herb product manufacturers today hold themselves to a higher standard.

Tobacco addiction: Ingestion of lobelia herb is of specific benefit. The chemical lobeline, found in lobelia, closely resembles nicotine, and therefore reduces cravings for it. Several times daily and during cravings, drink V4 cup lobelia tea, or take 10-20 drops of the tincture. Regular consumption of oats has been shown to curb the desire for cigarettes.79 This may be due to their sedative properties. Nicotine spreads through all body tissues, damaging them like other powerful drugs; cellular renewal with the pure food and herbal nutrition in the regeneration diets is indicated.

Consider the simple example of an herbal practitioner who gives someone who is ill an herb. The herb quickly and without side effects cures the illness. This same event is repeated again and again. Is this a case in which a health claim can be made, or does there need to be scientific research studies to verify that the herb might work? Does Scientific Research Apply to Adaptogens? The revival of herbal medicine in the United States has created a renewed demand for many herbs. As herbs have become more popular, there has been a backlash from the medical community and media.
Even though the herb industry is often portrayed as unregulated and irresponsible, the vast majorities of the herbs in this category are not available to the public and are not sold in health food or herb stores. Examples of poison herbs include aconite, arnica, datura, and gelsemium. Readers also should be aware that allergic reactions can occur from consuming any food, medicine, or herb. So although some herbs are very safe, a severe allergic response (anaphylaxis) is possible whenever anyone ingests a New substance.

Herbs were the darlings of the media during the mid-1990s, panaceas for what ailed you.
The best way to positively identify any herb is to refer to it by its botanical name (listed in table 1.1). In the Old Testament, there is a line from Ecclesiastes that reads: "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing New under the sun." Plant adaptogens are not new; it is only that these herbs and their uses are New to many of us. We are humbled by the innate power and wisdom of these herbs and grateful to be able to share their story. Table 1.2.

So although some herbs are very safe, a severe allergic response (anaphylaxis) is possible whenever anyone ingests a New substance. Idiosyncratic responses (unique and unexpected reactions to a substance) are also possible, so the first few times someone eats an unfamiliar mushroom, food, or herb, small doses are probably a good idea.

I wanted to follow up on a reader who wrote to your newspaper column regarding the potential liver toxicity of butterbur (Petasites hybridus), an herb that's become popular due to positive efficacy trials in migraine prevention and allergic rhinitis. While the herb is potentially toxic to the liver, it shouldn't be a problem with high-quality products like Petadolex. I do fear that some less honorable companies may latch onto this herb and not take such care with the high-tech extraction process that is necessary to reduce the risk. That might lead to some major liver injury cases.

Boswellia serrata Another herb historically used in the treatment of osteoarthritis is Boswellia serrata, a large branching tree native to India. Boswellia yields an exudative gum resin known as salai guggul. Although salai guggul has been used for centuries, newer preparations concentrated for the active components (bos-wellic acids) are giving better results. Boswellic acid extracts have demonstrated anti-arthritic effects in a variety of animal models.

Goldenseal, a berberine-containing herb, works against a variety of fungi, including Candida. Bloodroot, another herb that contains berberine, has shown action against skin fungi and is also an anti-inflammatory. Other herbs that contain berberine and are recommended for fungal infections include barberry, Oregon grape, and yellowroot. Q Horopito, or pepper tree (Pseudowintera colorata), a shrub native to New Zealand, contains polygodial, an antifungal agent that has been shown to act against bacteria as well.
Kolorex is a patented herbal formula from Forest Herbs Research containing extracts of the New Zealand herb horopito (Pseudowintem colomta) and aniseed. Horopito contains a strong antifungal agent called polygodial. Kolorex has been shown in laboratory experiments to be effective in controlling Candida albicans. Q Olive leaf extract with oleuropein is a powerful healer of microbial infections. Q Pau d'arco (also known as lapacho or taheebo) contains an antibacterial and antifungal agent, although it does have an alkaloid base and a small percentage of people may not benefit from its use.
Caution: Do not use this herb if you have hypoglycemia, high blood pressure, or a heart disorder. Q Echinacea is an immune stimulant, and should be avoided. In fact, it stimulates replication of T cells, which in turn enhances replication of the virus, according to Dr. Tieraona Low Doq, founder of the New Herb Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Caution: Do not take echinacea if you have an autoimmune disorder. Recommendations Q If you test positive for HIV, arrange for repeat testing as soon as you can to rule out the possibility of a false-positive result.

O'Bryan says to drink two to three cups a day of tea made with the herb horsetail, which is rich in the mineral. To make the tea, use 2 teaspoons of dried herb per cup of boiling water. Pour the desired amount of water over the measured amount of herb in a saucepan, boil for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat and steep for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, says Dr. O'Bryan. Be sure to use dried herb, not powdered extract. FOOD: Turn Over a New Leaf Dark green, leafy vegetables such as collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, broccoli, and parsley deliver calcium and magnesium.
CHASTEBERRY: Chases Away Symptoms This herb is believed to have a profound effect hormonally, not only helping to reverse vaginal changes and lowered libido but also relieving many of the symptoms of menopause, says Jason Elias, a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine in New Paltz, New York. It takes about 3 months of daily use to see results. He recommends using the herb in tincture form, following the dosage recommendations on the label. Chasteberry is often available in health food stores under the name vitex.
SIBERIAN GINSENG: An Herbal Energy Booster This herb helps restore energy and cool hot flashes, says Beeley. She recommends taking 200 to 1,000 milligrams in three divided doses throughout the day. Determine the size of the dose according to the severity of your hot flashes. For some menopausal women, Siberian ginseng can cause increased menstrual bleeding, so if you experience this effect, discontinue the herb. SUPPLEMENTS: Three for the Adrenals Worn-out adrenal glands are a common cause of fatigue in menopausal women, says Carolyn Dean, M.D., a physician in New York City.
GOTU KOLA: Encourage Cell Growth The herb gotu kola may help fight age spots by stimulating the growth of New, healthy cells and the production of collagen, the protein that holds skin together, says Brigitte Mars, an herbalist and nutritional consultant in Boulder, Colorado. She recommends daily use of a tincture or capsule form of the herb. Add one dropper of tincture to % cup of water and take three times daily, or take one or two 60-milligram capsules a day.

In this New edition I have not departed from the original philosophy—to describe the structures as a means of explaining a herb's activity in a way that benefits the practice of medical herbalism. I have, however, become rather fascinated by the molecular structures and I hope I can pass some of that enthusiasm on to the reader.
Apart from antimicrobial properties, the traditional hypotensive use for the herb has been verified through demonstration of coronary vasodilatory activity (Zarzuelo et al. 1991). Investigations by Hansen et al. (1996) reveal the presence of a dihydroxyphenyl ethanol fraction with calcium channel antagonist activity, leading to isolation of a New secoiridoid—oleacein. Subsequently oleacein was identified as a potent angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, offering further evidence for hypotensive action.

So as is the case with any unproven remedy, I'd be very cautious about using any herb without identifying all of its ingredients. In summary, if you suffer from migraines, avoid those situations, foods, and beverages that you know from experience will bring on an attack. The most common offenders are tyramine-rich foods such as aged cheese, yeast, and processed and nitrite-containing meats, as well as red wine and beer. Perhaps the best news to emerge from all the recent research in the headache area is the finding that sex often alleviates the pain.

One alternative being offered is so-called herbal Fen Phen, a combination of a thermogenic enhancer (such as the herb ephedra) and the antidepressant Saint John's wort. It makes sense that these herbs would be helpful for losing weight. We know that ephedra can speed up metabolism, which helps the body burn fat faster. In addition, Saint John's wort is reputed to be a natural appetite suppressant. As yet, there are no studies to confirm that these herbs will work well together. Beta-hydroxy Beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) HMB is among the most popular of the New sports supplements.
The word on Saint John's wort is so good that the National Institutes of Health will soon sponsor double-blind clinical trials of this herb. Saint John's wort is nature's cure for depression, but is it also a cure for obesity? A New product called "herbal Phen Fen" is being sold at natural food stores and pharmacies. "Herbal Phen Fen" contains Saint John's wort and ephedra, an herb that is used in antihistamines but that can also increase metabolism.
Kava Kava For 3000 years, residents of the South Pacific have used a beverage made from the herb kava kava, a member of the pepper family, to induce a feeling of well-being and relaxation. That's why I always chuckle when I see kava kava being promoted as the cutting-edge, "new" herb for anxiety—it's only New to us. Just recently scientists verified what Polynesians have known for centuries: kava kava is a natural mood enhancer.
Garlic is a "broad-spectrum" herb that offers numerous benefits. It is a natural antibiotic—in fact, during World War II when penicillin was scarce, the Russian army relied on garlic to prevent infection on the battlefield. Garlic can protect against heart disease by thwarting the formation of blood clots. But there's even more exciting news about the herb known as the "stinking rose." According to researchers at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center, aged garlic can dramatically reduce the growth of human prostate cancer cells in test tube experiments.

Just recently scientists verified what Polynesians have known for centuries: kava kava is a natural mood enhancer. In 1993, scientists discovered that kava kava contains potent compounds, kavalactones, which are natural muscle relaxants that have a pleasant, calming effect on both the body and the mind.
But there's even more exciting news about the herb known as the "stinking rose." According to researchers at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center, aged garlic can dramatically reduce the growth of human prostate cancer cells in test tube experiments. Researchers exposed prostate cancer cells to S-allylmercaptocysteine, a sulfur compound found only in aged, (not fresh) garlic. Prostate cancer cells are sensitive to the male hormone testosterone and particularly to DHT, a potent metabolite of testosterone that can stimulate the growth of prostate tumors.

Some of the main features of this are that manufacturers will be required to provide: • Evidence that the herb has been used traditionally for at least 30 years (15 years' non-EU use will be taken into account). • Bibliographic data on safety with an expert report. • A quality dossier demonstrating manufacture according to principles of good manufacturing practice. The New directive is not a route to licensing for POMs or for traditional herbal medicines that could be licensed by the conventional route.

These are major tranquilizers and are usually reserved for more serious disruptive or aggressive behavior. They are also used to suppress the tics of Tourette's syndrome, even though they can cause a permanent movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia.

This herb is one of the classical and most important in the arsenal of Oriental tonic and health promoting medicinal plants. Astragalus has been in the limelight in recent years as a possible answer for a range of human diseases. It is probably the most hopeful New natural remedy for human AIDS, viral hepatitis, other viral diseases, myasthenia gravis, and, especially, immune restoration of cancer patients. In cancer patients, it is proposed as a treatment to strengthen the cellular immunity, which has been seriously compromised by the disease and/or by chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
