Aspirin has a half-life of less than half an hour, so you may have to take it several times a day. Other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) last longer. For example:
• Ibuprofen (Advil) has a half-life of 2 hours.
• Indomethacin (Indocin) has a half-life of 4 to 5 hours.
• Ketorolac (Orudis) has a half-life of 4 to 10 hours.
• Naproxen (Aleve) has a half-life of 14 hours.
• Nabumetone (Relafen) has a half-life of 26 hours.
But the winner is oxaprozin, an NSAID with a half-life of 58 hours. |

| Andrew Weil, who remains one of the pioneers of integrative medicine, explains that when he went to traditional medical school, he received one hour of training in nutrition across all four years. That is one clock hour, not one credit hour. Just one hour — sixty minutes of nutrition training in four years of medical school!
By comparison, I've spent about 4,000 hours... actually, well over 4,000 hours at this point, studying nutrition and the causes of disease and health. |

Table 19: Interpreting the 5-Hour Glucose Tolerance Test
Normal
No elevation greater than 160 mg %; below 150 mg % at end of first hour; below 120 mg % at end of second hour.
Flat (no hypoglycemia)
No variation more than ± 20 mg % from fasting value (probably due to altered gastrointestinal absorption).
Relative (reactive or
A normal 2 or 3 hour response curve, showing functional) a decrease of 20 mg % from fasting level during hypoglycemia the final two hours. |

By comparison, I've spent about 4,000 hours... actually, well over 4,000 hours at this point, studying nutrition and the causes of disease and health. So it just goes to show you that if you're looking for education in nutrition, medical schools are certainly the wrong place to go. And sadly, our nation's doctors really don't know much about nutrition.
Many doctors unknowingly propagate nutritional myths
Just as sadly, many of them think they do. |

Is it worth $20 an hour? $50 an hour? Or perhaps just $10 per hour? Let's say it's worth just $10 per hour, which means for every repair, you're wasting $40 of your time, plus probably a couple hundred dollars on the repairs itself in terms of parts and labor. Wouldn't you be much better off putting that money into a new car and using that time to be productive and earn money at your job or earn extra revenue if you're running your own business?
Now you might say, "Okay Mike, all of this makes sense. But I don't have the money to buy a new car." I understand the situation. |

Within an hour of ingesting anti-freeze, animals can display symptoms including anxiety, vomiting, depression, and weakness. These are caused by the corrosive chemical destroying the animal's kidneys and entering the blood stream. In six to eighteen hours this can progress to a comatose state and death within another six to eighteen hours. Ethylene glycol is so toxic that even a small amount, which cats may lick off their paws, is fatal. The amount to kill a dog is slightly more. If you suspect that your pet has ingested anti-freeze seek veterinary attention immediately. |

| Two schools offer 1 hour of nutrition education—in 4,000 hours of medical courses. Eleven offer 2 to 10 hours; nine give 11 to 19 hours; three offer 20 to 40 hours, and only one has a complete department of nutrition. For purposes of comparison, let me note that I have taught—and still do teach—basic and advanced nutrition courses at a number of colleges and universities. Those courses require 60 hours of classroom study, and certainly can't be described as qualifying students to assume a position of authority, or to dispense nutritional advice and counsel to the public. |

Relative (reactive or

Probable relative
Same as relative hypoglycemia, except there hypoglycemia is a decrease of 10 to 20 mg % from below fasting level.
Flat (hypoglycemia)
An elevation of 20 mg % or less, followed by a decrease of 20 mg % or more below the fasting level.
Pre-diabetic
A 2-hour response identical to the pre-diabetic, hypoglycemia but showing a hypoglycemic response during the final 3 hours. |

For animals on which DAS was applied topically one hour prior to application of DMBA, a lower incidence of neoplasia was noted over the study period (28 weeks), compared to animals treated with DAS one hour after DMBA administration; in BP-exposed mice, the antitumorigenic potential of DAS was more evident in animals treated one hour after BP exposure, compared to those treated with DAS 1 hour prior to BP.118 In this model system, the activity of y-glutamyl transpeptidase (a marker of cell proliferation and neoplasia) was significantly inhibited by DAS. |

Allow the herbs to steep for as long as half an hour for seeds, two hours for flowers, four hours for leaves, and overnight for roots and barks. Strain out the herbs and enjoy the nutrient-rich brew.
This method is not suggested for licorice root or valerian root, which will taste too medicinal, or for slippery elm bark, which will become too mucilaginous to enjoy.
Decoctions
A decoction is the preferred method of making tea from those roots, barks, and seeds that are woodier and require more energy for their precious constituents, including minerals, to be extracted. |

Many doctors graduating from medical school today have but a single hour of training in nutrition. Just one clock hour—60 minutes. Yet, my training on nutrition and health spans thousands of hours. Thus, if you want to compare the number of actual hours on subjects like nutrition, the knowledge that I obtained through dedicated study far exceeds that of doctors graduating from medical school.
Doctors are experts on many things, but not nutrition. |

Sonata has a much shorter half-life (1 hour) than Ambien (2.5 hours) and Lunesta (6 hours), and is therefore promoted as being associated with less drowsiness the next day. Lunesta is a pure "mirror version" of the same molecule as its parent, zopiclone, and appears to have been developed in a marketing effort to leave behind the negative marketing that was associated with studies of zopiclone (conducted before the latest Z drugs were released), which showed an increase in traffic accidents with its use. |

They would identify the symptom itself -- the water -- as being the disease, and they would try to figure out which chemical would take care of it. |

Ben: Literally 60 minutes.
Mike: Sixty minutes! 60 minutes of training on nutrition. Now, I've spent 5,000 hours studying nutrition, health and the causes of disease. I poured those 5,000 hours into the creation of this Honest Food Guide. That's my background for understanding these cause-and-effect relationships. Your average doctor has spent 60 minutes. That is unbelievable. |

In contrast, I have now spent over 5000 hours conducting investigations, reading books on nutrition and health, and conducting real-world experiments that have taught me a world of useful information about how nutrition really works in the human body. By any honest assessment, then, you might say I have 5000 times the credibility of most MDs when it comes to nutrition. |

Americans spend less than 10 percent of their income on food; they also spend less than a half hour a day preparing meals and little more than an hour enjoying them.* For most people for most of history, gathering and preparing food has been an occupation at the very heart of daily life. Traditionally people have allocated a far greater proportion of their income to food—as they still do in several of the countries where people eat better than we do and as a consequence are healthier than we are.^ Here, then, is one way in which we would do well to go a little native: backward, or

If the lines on your skin are parallel, pink, purplish, or white and don't come and go, you have stretch marks—medically termed striae. They're usually found on the abdomen, buttocks, breasts, thighs, and arms. As their name implies, they're signs of rapid or persistent skin stretching. |

Drink fluids half an hour before, or two hours after meals.
Drink fluids that are neither too hot nor too cold, to reduce stress on the stomach.
Combine foods properly.
Don't overeat at a meal (20% less is a good objective); eat more often, if necessary. Six small meals are easier to digest than three large ones. Chew each mouthful thoroughly before swallowing. Remember that digestion begins in the mouth.
Eat mostly raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, grains, and seeds. Ideally, twice as many vegetables as fruits.
Include a quality protein in each meal (raw vegetable, or nut is best). |
