That's the true story of what's happening with meth on the Big Island, but you won't see that emblazoned on a post card from hawaii.
No requirement for honest labeling of mac nuts
Getting back to the details of the mac nut industry, there is currently no law requiring that macadamia nuts be accurately labeled with a country of origin. That is quite interesting, given that there are such laws on things like olive oil and that there is a qualitative difference between macadamia nuts grown in hawaii versus other countries. |
| I regret that I cannot list all the other deserving mac nut farmers in hawaii. There are many others, but that is way beyond the scope of this article. Remember: I get paid nothing to recommend these companies, and I paid for all the travel on my own dime. As this is a non-profit endeavor on my part to cover the mac nut industry, I simply do not have the resources to put together a full consumer guide on every farm that sells mac nuts in hawaii. I just know that quality (and ethics) vary widely. |
| If something doesn't change in hawaii soon, its local farmer mac nut industry could be all but wiped out in a matter of years. Perhaps in as few as two years, you may witness a devastation of the macadamia nut industry, to be replaced by factory farms, massive use of chemical pesticides, labor violations for the workers, and everything else that goes with corporate control of the food supply.
So if you wish to support this industry, I encourage you to buy directly from these farmers. I've already recommended South Kona Macs (www.SouthKonaMacs. |
| As this is a non-profit endeavor on my part to cover the mac nut industry, I simply do not have the resources to put together a full consumer guide on every farm that sells mac nuts in hawaii. I just know that quality (and ethics) vary widely. If you purchase mac nuts from anybody, be sure to ask these questions:
1) Does your farm use Roundup or other chemical herbicides or pesticides? Do not purchase nuts from farms that use such chemicals.
2) What is the maximum temperature your mac nuts are exposed to during drying? (The lower the temperature, the better. |
| I hope to bring you more articles about health products from hawaii, including noni, spirulina, kava kava and even a story about how the war on marijuana has caused an escalation in the use of meth on across the islands. Stay tuned to NewsTarget for more honest, independent reporting on topics like these.
If you know of another good mac nut farm that consumers may want to contact, you may list their URL in the comments section of this article. (Please do! |
| One of the best regions in the world in which to grow macadamia nuts is hawaii, but the industry there is about to be devastated, and in another five years it may not exist at anywhere near the same level it does today. Sadly, thousands of acres of macadamia nut trees, along with the farmers who tend them, could be economically wiped out. Given that macadamia nut trees take about seven years to produce their very first nut and 15 years to reach maturity, this is not an industry that can recover overnight. |

In the study illustrated here, the levels of different cancers affecting Japanese and Japanese immigrants to hawaii were compared with those affecting the ethnic Hawaiian population. For example, while prostate cancer was at the time little-known in Japan, the incidence of this cancer increased by a factor of ten in Japanese immigrants to hawaii, to the point of becoming comparable to the native Hawaiian levels. |

In Walsh's view, the advantage of hawaii is that these islands have high populations of midges (which, as we have seen in Chapter One, are cacao's main pollinators). "There are five kinds of midges and we have them all," he says. Where one can count at the most five mature pods on a tree in other places, in hawaii they get 25; and in hawaii, 1350 trees can be planted per acre, compared with only 200 to 600 elsewhere. The yields are thus fantastic. |

A confounding factor here is that hawaii is closer to the equator and Hawaiian males are likely to have higher vitamin D levels from sun exposure.
An interesting study was recently conducted among Japanese men, 25 who lived in Japan and 25 U.S.-born Japanese men who lived in California, all of whom were undergoing prostate cancer surgery.
It makes more sense that the Asian diet in its totality, along with other environmental factors such as vitamin D, plays a strong role in prostate cancer prevention. For example, soy and green tea work synergistically to inhibit prostate cancer. |

Researchers at the Cancer Research Center at the University of hawaii published a case-controlled, multiethnic (Japanese, Caucasian, Native Hawaiian, Filipino, and Chinese) population study to examine the role of dietary soy, fiber, and related foods and nutrients on the risk of endometrial cancer.26 The diets of 300 women with endometrial cancer were compared with women in the general multiethnic population. The researchers found that high fat intake was positively associated with endometrial cancer, whereas a diet rich in fiber, soy, and other legumes reduced the risk of endometrial cancer. |

Severson, the lead researcher for the Japan-Hawaii Cancer Study, investigated this question by interviewing about eight thousand Japanese men living in hawaii and charting cases of prostate cancer for as long as twenty-one years. During that period, 174 men developed prostate cancer. Only one-tenth of this number of men would have been expected to develop prostate cancer if they had been living in Japan. Clearly, environment, lifestyle, and diet played key roles in raising the risk of prostate cancer. |

Conversely, the high levels of stomach cancer characteristic of native Japanese and caused by infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria, diminished considerably and also began to approach native-born Hawaiian levels. |

When I was in hawaii, I took this Astaxanthin product as an experiment, and then spent three hours under the intense Hawaiian sun with no shirt on. There I was in the intense Hawaiian summer sun that would have burned me to a crisp years ago, doing some boogie boarding exercises and waiting to see if I would have a burn from it. Thanks to the astaxanthin and my other nutritional habits, the only effect I experienced was simply a darkening of the tan and a temporary reddening of the skin that faded in a few hours. No sunburn. |

Twenty-three percent of North American weeds are used as medicinals, while only 7 percent of nonweedy species are used as medicinals (%2 = 795, p = 0.0000). Medicinal plants tend to be weeds. |

Gulbinat and coworkers, for example, studied the incidence of cancer among schizophrenics in Nagasaki, Japan, Aarhus, Denmark, and Honolulu, hawaii, and compared these rates with that of the local general public.44 Interestingly, although cancer incidence was generally much lower among Caucasian schizophrenics, it was elevated in Japanese schizophrenics in both hawaii and Japan. Of particular interest here were the very low relative risks of lung cancer in both Danish males (rr = 0.38) and females (rr = 0.33) during the period 1957 to 1980.

The Japanese men who immigrated to California turned out to have rates of coronary heart disease five times higher than the rates in Japan, while immigrants to hawaii had rates intermediate between those in Japan and California. This heart disease "gradient" could not be explained by diet, Stallones reluctantly agreed (changes in diet in both the Hawaiian and the Californian groups were similar.) But neither could it be explained by Syme's "cultural mobility" hypothesis (after all, both groups had emigrated and experienced dislocation). |

Say you come to hawaii to visit me and we have a Hawaiian luau -- my wife and I are there, and we leave our shoes at the door and they get the mixed up on the way out. I put on her size-five shoe and she puts on my size-twelve shoe -- and we go to the shoe doctor. She says, "My shoes are falling off", and the doc says, "Sounds like maybe it's too big. We'll check the tests." He says, "Honey, it's no problem. It's a size five, and it's in the normal range." -- because sizes four to 13 would be normal for shoe sizes.

To ensure that he was creating chocolate of the highest quality, Walsh engaged the services of Philippe Padovani, then executive chef of the Ritz-Carlton Mauna Lani on Hawaii; Padovani tested all the best chocolates from around the world, and developed an extremely smooth chocolate that had a high concentration of cacao butter and chocolate liquor. So good it proved to be that by 1994 Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate was selling at a price that was nearly two dollars per pound higher than Valrhona. |

But this is not unthinking mass production— Walsh carefully regulates the amount of water each tree gets, to create just enough stress, resulting in the right concentration of flavor.

However, in hawaii, Asians, native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders age 20 years or older are more than twice as likely to have diagnosed diabetes as Caucasians after adjusting for population age differences, and are more susceptible than Caucasians to being overweight. Similarly, in California, Asians are 1.5 times as likely to have diagnosed diabetes as non-Hispanic whites. Other groups in these populations also have increased risk for diabetes.

Why Should I Eat Guava?
Pound for pound, guava is higher in vitamin C than citrus and contains appreciable amounts of vitamin A as well. Guava fruits are also a good source of pectin, a dietary fiber, and rich in potassium and phosphorus. Guava contains an amazing amount of phytochemicals including tannins, phenols, triterpenes, flavonoids, essential oils, saponins, carotenoids, and lectins. |
