And the zombie-like consumerism depicted in Idiocracy is only a slight exaggeration of the behavior of consumers today who actually guzzle down gallons of gatorade, thinking it's good for them because it contains "electrolytes." (Gatorade is mostly just salt water with artificial coloring additives). Sports drink? Guess again. |

Though men tend to walk around with a shield of bravado and concrete-solid emotions, they sweat over one particular fear more than they sweat in a heavily populated steam room: doctor, rubber glove, bend over. |

Drink a fortified drink like Gatorade" if you are participating in vigorous physical activity, such as a sporting event, or have prolonged fever or diarrhea. Sports drinks can help replenish electrolytes lost by the body in such situations. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which cause dehydration by inducing urination. Eat five to seven servings of fruit and vegetables every day. Most fruits and vegetables contain at least 70-90% water. They can also provide you with important vitamins and minerals. |

As of 2005, more than two hundred products—including gatorade, Diet Pepsi, and Baked Lay's—sported the Smart Spot symbol. But simply labeling a product healthy doesn't make it so. Chips are still full of salt and chemical additives, and have a nutritional profile on a par with diet sodas, which are completely devoid of nutrients and contain artificial sweeteners and other potential health hazards.

Sound science: The objective-sounding way that food companies like to justify their opposition to any policy that would interfere with their bottom line. As in: "We cannot act to remove soda and junk food from schools in the absence of 'sound science.' " But for industry, no amount of science will ever be sufficient.
Stealth marketing: A technique whereby consumers are not aware that they are being marketed to. Children are especially vulnerable, for example, to product placement. |

Ludwig stressed that "kids are not triathletes" and that sports drinks would come in handy only if dehydration were suddenly to become a public health menace. |

Sports drinks like gatorade and Powerade do have fewer calories per ounce than traditional soft drinks. But they are generally in twenty-ounce bottles, while some soft drinks can be purchased in twelve-ounce cans. Substituting a twenty-ounce sports drink for a twelve-ounce soft drink has a small calorie advantage in the case of gatorade, but for Powerade, total calories increase. If children replace twenty-ounce soft drinks with twenty-ounce sports drinks, there is a calorie advantage, but noncaloric beverages and drinks with better nutrition would be preferable. |

Q. When did you regain consciousness, after how many hours ?
A. A couple of hours later I regained consciousness. I was aware that I was inside my body, but I had no control of it, it was shut down. That was a really interesting time for me. |

Recommendation: gatorade Light, as outlined above, will begin to replace sodium losses. Increase your salt intake by salting food a little more heavily and drinking a cup or two of bouillon daily for several days following recovery.
• Diarrhea also causes a loss of potassium, which adds to the weak, breathless, washed-out feeling that lingers after your recovery from such an illness. |

The culprit was the quart of gatorade he habitually drank an hour before every race. Many so-called sports drinks contain a lot of sugar along with the helpful electrolytes. gatorade contains 6 percent sugar. Coke is about 11 percent sugar. The sugar in the drink caused a marked increase in his glucose levels. (Any very sweet food would have the same effect.) After this steep rise in his glucose levels, the six high-intensity minutes he spent crewing had the opposite effect—causing his blood glucose levels to reverse and plummet. End result: pronounced hypoglycemia. |

RECOMMENDATIONS
Ll Take acorus to control vomiting during drug withdrawal. This herb should be used under professional supervision only.
Ll Replace fluids lost by vomiting. Whatever the cause, it is important to take in as much fluid as possible without upsetting the stomach any further. Sip clear fluids such as water, ginger ale, fruit juices, or gatorade. Do not drink much at any one time, and slowly work back to a normal diet. |

| Industry claims that advertising is only effective at moving people toward brands of products they will use anyway: a child might be tugged by General Mills to eat Count Chocula or by Kellogg to want Disney Buzz Blasts, by Pepsi to want gatorade or by Coke to want Powerade. Such advertising, so the industry says, does not compel children to want sugared cereal or soft drinks more than they would otherwise. |

Second glass: 8 ounces of water and V4 teaspoon of baking soda.
Take small sips of each, alternating between the two glasses. Stay out of direct sunlight, rest, and continue to take fluids until you feel better. |
