Without coq10, you would die in a matter of minutes.
Yet statin drugs, for example, inhibit the production of coq10 by interfering with the normal, healthy function of the liver. So when people try to lower their cholesterol with statin drugs, they often end up with a chronic deficiency of coq10. Many times, sadly, their doctors don't even tell them that they need to supplement coq10, which is one of the most important things a person needs to do when taking statin drugs. |

It is even more helpful to take coq10 if you are on statins (cholesterol-lowering medications), since they decrease the levels of coq10 that may be contributors to liver and muscle abnormalities. Chromium, at 200-400 meg a day, increases HDL and lowers total cholesterol. Taking 400 IU of vitamin E a day helps with inhibiting cholesterol oxidation.

Multiple Sclerosis
My patients with MS have shown that at least 400 mg of grape-seed extract, 200-300 mg of coq10, and even some additional 500 to 1000 mg of vitamin C can be helpful in this disease. I warn my MS patients that it may be more than 6 months before they see any improvement.
Lupus and Crohn's Disease
These patients need about 300 mg of grape-seed extract and 200 mg of coq10 added to the basic supplements. Again, if these patients improve, it's usually after about 6 months.

Mike: And getting back to coq10, the production of coq10 is suppressed by statin drugs, you mentioned.
Dr. Pizzorno: Yes, it is. It's suppressed by stain drugs, and also it's produced in the mitochondria, so as the mitochondria age, it's kind of like a double whammy -- they're being less functional producers of coq10, which means they're more susceptible to cell damage and they just go down quickly.

Nevertheless, the body often cannot make enough for optimal function, and therefore coq10 supplements may be very helpful.
CoQI0 is highly concentrated in heart muscle cells, due to the high energy requirements of this type of cell. Congestive heart failure has been associated with low blood and tissue levels of coq10. The severity of heart failure correlates with the severity of coq10 deficiency. This coq10 deficiency may well be a primary factor in some types of heart muscle dysfunction; in others, it may be a secondary phenomenon. |

Take 60-100 mg of coq10 a day for at least eight weeks. Some studies show that folic acid in a 0.1% solution used as a mouth rinse has reduced gum inflammation and bleeding. Rinse the mouth with 5 ml of solution, available from health food stores, twice a day for one to five minutes for 30-60 days. Zinc stabilizes the gum membrane, increases antioxidant activity, promotes collagen synthesis, inhibits plaque growth, and performs numerous immune activities. Take 15-30 mg of the picolinate form a day. |

I've put my patients with Parkinson's on greens and coq10 and other supplements. Soon they're able to feed themselves. Did we get rid of the Parkinson's? No. But they're able to feed themselves. That counts, too.
It's not been studied, so I don't know how you double blind study changing nutritional habits. And it's a flaw of models. You know, conventional models study a single entity to death and find out everything about it. With a natural model, nobody's ever going to say, "Okay, take this vitamin E, take this coq10, but don't eat them." It's a multi-therapeutic model. |

So What Is coq10, Anyway?
CoQ 10 isn't a vitamin; it actually belongs to a family called ubiquinones, and it's found in most tissues in the body. It's essential for the manufacture of the body's energy molecule, ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Virtually every one of the studies investigating the effect of CoQ 10 on heart muscle function have reported significant and positive results. "If there is just one thing you do to help maintain your heart's health," says Sinatra, "make sure you're taking CoQ 10 daily. |

CoQ10 is said by these researchers to enhance the pumping capacity of the heart and to eliminate the often major side effects associated with conventional heart-failure drugs. Heart-failure patients were said to have a relative deficiency of coq10 in their hearts and to be responsive to daily oral supplements of coq10, which, it is reported, increases the production of energy in heart-muscle cells. Some 91 percent of the patients studied showed improvement within thirty days of beginning coq10 supplementation. Certainly more investigation of this intriguing vitamin-like nutrient is warranted. |

To help educate customers about the healing power of coq10, he offered to send reprints of magazine and newspaper articles describing some of the scientific findings about the nutrient.
This public education effort, of course, would not be tolerated by the FDA Gestapo. So the FDA organized an armed raid comprised of nine FDA agents, 11 U.S. Marshals and eight Oregon state police. With guns drawn, they kicked in the doors to Ken Scott's business and conducted one of the most terror-driven "vitamin" raids in U.S. history. |

Statin drugs, of course, interfere with the production of coq10 at the cellular level, throughout the body. It interferes with the mitochondria in the cells, and as a result, people suddenly have coq10 deficiencies, and they can't manufacture cholesterol the way they used to be able to as well. Suddenly, they are lacking in sex hormones, because sex hormones are manufactured from cholesterol, and now that they are taking statin drugs they can't make cholesterol. So now they have no sex drive left.
Of course, they think this is just an aging problem. |

Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, for example, greatly interfere with Coenzyme Q10 production (a nutrient essential for cellular energy), but instead of being told to take supplemental coq10, many patients suffering from fatigue and exhaustion on statin drugs are simply diagnosed with another disease and given yet another prescription drug to take.
Antidepressant drugs, as another example, interfere with the metabolism of carbohydrates. Most people taking antidepressants are deficient in the B vitamins (especially folic acid). |
