A substance called d-Limonene, which is found in the oils of citrus fruits, has been shown to promote the detoxification of estrogen. Common citrus fruits are oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, lemons, limes, and tangelos. Research has also found that when male and female lab mice were administered an extract of d-Limonene, they lost weight.

The ones with an odd number of carbons smell predominantly waxy with a citrus character in the background, while those with an even number of atoms smell predominantly citrus-like with a waxy character in the background. By waxy I mean the smell you get when you blow out a candle, and by citruslike I mean orange peel. Now this is decidedly weird! |

Drinking orange juice and eating citrus fruits is fine, and small amounts (around 25 to 50 milligrams) of citrus bioflavonoids in a multivitamin pill are unlikely to do any harm. But avoid foods with added citrus oils and especially avoid taking dietary supplements of citrus bioflavonoids themselves, especially if you are taking tamoxifen.
The dose that is possibly harmful to humans is 280 milligrams per day. Until there is more definitive data in humans, I recommend that people taking tamoxifen avoid taking high-dose supplements of citrus bioflavonoids. |

| Therefore, you might think the addition of more acids, such as citrus fruits, might improve the digestive process. This is not so! The addition of citrus or other acids stops the secretion of the gastric juices necessary for protein digestion. Either the pepsin will not be secreted in the presence of an acid, or the acidic environment will destroy the pepsin. Any acid (say, vinegar or lemon) on a salad, when eaten with a protein meal, stops the production of hydrochloric acid since the pepsin interferes with protein digestion. |

The same is true of citrus. Occasional citrus fruit is fine, but avoid drinking orange juice, which provides a lot of sugars without any fiber.
Guideline 4. Cook with Olive Oil or Macadamia Nut Oil
Here s why: Both olive oil and macadamia nut oil are rich in oleic acid, which is anti-inflammatory. Stress triggers a low-grade inflammatory response, which these oils can help to protect against. They might also ease some of your aches and pains.
Examples: Extra-virgin olive oil has the greatest nutritional value, but other types of olive oil are better for cooking at high temperatures. |

Leaves, Stem, and Root: citrus sinensis is an evergreen tree with rounded crown. The branches are angular when young, then become cylindrical, with a few slender, rather flexible axillary spines. The leaves are acute and rounded below; the petioles are narrowly winged.

Fruit Juices
Many people experience sour stomach and burning indigestion as a result of drinking citrus juices such as grapefruit or orange juice. citrus fruits, as well as tomatoes and spicy foods, cause most of their distress by direct irritation of the tissues of the esophagus and stomach rather than by lowering LES pressure. Surprisingly, acid is not the cause of heartburn from citrus foods, since neutralized orange juice also produces heartburn. |

In the 1970s and 1980s, I appeared in a television ad for citrus fruits. A New York public relations firm for the Florida citrus Commission had earlier interviewed me about fruit, nutrition and health. This interview, unknown to me at the time, was the source of my presence on the ad. I had not seen the ad and I did not get paid for it, but, nonetheless, I was one of the talking heads that helped the Florida citrus Commission build its case for the vitamin C content of oranges. Why did I do the interview? |

The really important message in the epidemiology, which is all we had to go on, was that some vegetables and citrus fruits seemed to be protective against cancer. But those sections of the report were written as though it was the vitamin C in the citrus or the beta-carotene in the vegetables that was responsible for the effect. I kept changing the language to talk about 'foods that contain vitamin C and 'foods that contain carotenes.' Because how do you know it's not one of the other things in the carrots or the broccoli? There are hundreds of carotenes. |

Here are a few of the most effective antiparasitic herbs:
• citrus seed extract. citrus seed extract is highly active against protozoa, bacteria, and yeast, and has long been used in the treatment of parasitic infections. It is not absorbed into the body's tissues, is nontoxic and generally hypoallergenic, and can be administered for up to several months, a length of time which may be required to eliminate giardia and the candidiasis that often accompanies it.
• Artemisia annua. This is an herbal remedy of Chinese origin. |

One exception is citrus juice, which, in excess, can irritate the intestines.
Vitamin C in food has several advantages over synthetic ascorbic acid.
Natural ascorbic acid found in food is also commonly accompanied by bioflavonoids. The white partitions of citrus fruits are rich in bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids have their own powerful antioxidant effects. One of the effects of bioflavonoids is to decrease capillary fragility. Since ascorbic acid slightly increases capillary fragility, this action of the bioflavonoids offsets this tendency. |

Foods that are problematic for heartburn sufferers include citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions and garlic, vinegar, and anything fatty or spicy. Large meals and eating just before bedtime can also cause irritation, as can caffeinated and carbonated drinks. Episodes of heartburn can also be triggered by body position, certain movements, and/or exertion, such as lying down, bending over, or strenuous exercise. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can also contribute to heartburn. These commonly include high blood pressure and heart medications. |

| Getting that much folic acid isn't difficult—you can take a single vitamin pill or you can get it from folate-rich foods, such as leafy green vegetables and citrus fruits, or from folate-fortified foods, including enriched breads and cereals. Fortifying foods with folic acid has been mandated in the US since 1998, in an effort to boost folate intake.
TAKE A MULTIVITAMIN
Other than repeating the message about the importance of folic acid, most public health officials can't figure out what else might persuade women to follow the advice.

OTHER TRICKS
•Chew gum for one hour after a meal. A study from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in New Mexico found that this reduced the amount of time that acid was in contact with the esophagus.
•Suck on lozenges. This stimulates the production of saliva, which bathes the esophageal lining. Some people find that eating sweet pickles also increases saliva. |

Department of Agriculture, the iron- and copper-binding molecules called polyphenols in some foods (particularly grapes, berries, cherries, olives, cocoa, tea and citrus rind) account for most of the antioxidant capacity of fruits and vegetables. [J AOAC Int 83: 950-56, 2000] A plentiful supply of polyphenols (sometimes called bioflavonoids) may not be provided in the best plant food diet or supplement regimen. Interestingly, it was found that a major measure of oxidation was not reduced among vegetarians compared to non-vegetarians. |

He proved that fresh citrus fruit prevented and cured scurvy. By 1795, limes were standard supplements on British ships and scurvy was no longer a problem. British seamen are called "limeys" to this day because of this custom. Captain James Cook sailed to the Hawaiian Islands using sauerkraut for his vitamin C and lost no men to scurvy.
DISCOVERY OF ASCORBIC ACID
Until the early twentieth century, the factor in these foods that prevented scurvy was an unknown antiscorbutic (prevents scurvy) factor. |
