Anderson Cancer Center reviewed dozens of studies on resveratrol and concluded that it exhibited anticancer properties against a wide range of tumor cells, including lymphoid and myeloid cancers, multiple myeloma, cancers of the breast, prostate, stomach, colon, pancreas, and thyroid, melanoma, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, ovarian carcinoma, and cervical carcinoma. The researchers concluded that "resveratrol appears to exhibit therapeutic effects against cancer."

Carcinoma of the fundus [uterus] and carcinoma of the cervix," he wrote, "are to some extent exfoliative lesions, in the sense that cells at the free surface of the growth tend to be dislodged and subsequently find their way into the vagina." Healthy cells come in regular shapes and form orderly patterns, but malignant cells are out of control. When looked at under a typical microscope the difference between healthy and cancerous cells is usually unmistakable.
Papanicolaou was not the first to use the microscope to find malignant cells, nor did he claim to have invented the method. |

There are approximately 20 different kinds of lung tumors, but fully one-third of them are of two types—squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma—with about another one-quarter of the small cell (or oat cell) carcinoma type. The names generally indicate what kind of lung cell went haywire—for example, squamous cell carcinoma means a cancer that arose from the cells that line the bronchial tubes (the squamous epithelial cells). Adenocarcinoma refers to a cancer that developed from mucus-producing cells, and so on. |

The possibility that long-term use of anthracene drugs increases the probability of colon carcinoma has not been fully clarified. Recent studies show no connections between the administration of anthracene drugs and the frequency of carcinomas in the colon.
Drug Interactions: Chronic use of aloe can lead to potassium loss, which can affect the actions of cardiac glycosides and antiarrhythmic drugs. There is an increase in the possibility of potassium deficiency when Aloe is used along with thiazide diuretics, licorice and corticosteroids.
Pregnancy: Aloe should not be used during pregnancy. |

As with other forms of breast cancer, Paget's disease of the breast can be classified two ways: either as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which is a very early stage of breast cancer with cancer cells that are confined to the milk ducts, or as invasive ductal carcinoma, a late-stage with cancer that has spread from the ducts into the surrounding breast tissue. |

Carcinogenicity: High intake of cayenne peppers as food has been correlated to an increased risk of gastric carcinoma in one case-control study of 972 persons in Mexico (Lopez-Carrillo et al, 1994). Any consumption of chilies was correlated with an odds ratio of 5.49 for risk of stomach cancer and 17.11 for those who self-rated in the highest tertile of intake. The dose-response curve was inexplicably flat in this study. |

The study did not find an increased risk of invasive ductal or lobular carcinoma in women who had used HRT either less than or more than five years. A slight increased risk of breast cancer was observed in current users and those with less than five years of use; current users with more than five years of use had no increase in risk. These results are the opposite of those seen in the Nurses' Health Study—women who are using HRT for more than five years have the increase in risk. |
| It is possible to treat carcinoma in situ in selected cases, but this is definitely a judgment call and should be considered very carefully after colposcopy, biopsies, and careful follow-up.

| In mild dysplasia, the basal cell layer is thicker, up to one-third the total thickness of the tissue; in moderate dysplasia, they occupy the bottom and into the middle third; in severe dysplasia, they extend to the top third. carcinoma "in situ" is not an invasive malignancy, but rather the extension of the immature basal cells to the very top of the tissue thickness. While it does carry a higher risk of conversion to true cancer, it too is completely treatable.
The possibility of progression to cervical cancer increases with the severity of the dysplasia. |
| Eighty-five percent of the primary vaginal cancers are squamous cell (a particular cell type) carcinoma. The most common symptoms of invasive squamous cell cancer include vaginal bleeding or foul-smelling discharge. Pain is usually a late symptom.
The tragedy of another cancer, cervical cancer, is that it is a preventable disease. It is preceded by a prolonged precancerous state in almost all cases and can be detected at its early precancerous states by annual Pap smears. These earlier states of abnormal cells and cervical dysplasias are easily treatable conditions. |
| My own research study investigating natural treatment methods for cervical atypia, cervical dysplasias, and carcinoma in situ of the cervix used beta-carotene supplementation as one part of a multifactorial supplementation and local treatment protocol. I found a high success rate using this combination protocol. Most of the women were given supplements of 150,000 units of mixed natural carotenes daily for a minimum of three months. |

Silverstein, MD, a Los Angeles physician, describes ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast as a "surgeon's disease." While DCIS represented only 1% of newly diagnosed breast disease decades ago, since the introduction of mammography it may represent 30-40% of the new cases that are treated. [Annals Surgical Oncology 6: 802-10, 1999]
Dr. Silverstein goes on to say that "many patients with DCIS are in a state of terror after having been told that they have breast cancer." But is DCIS really breast cancer? |

Investigators reviewed the treatment of 172 women with ductal carcinoma in situ, all of whom underwent biopsy, with 65% undergoing repeat biopsy. Surgery (lumpectomy) was performed in 18% of these women, radiation in 82%. Of the 172 patients, 15 (8.7%) experienced a recurrence, and only one death was recorded over a 10-year period. [Annals Surgery 231: 235-45, 2000] The question is, was treatment responsible for the high cure rate? We don't know. Treatment may have had no effect. |
| This has given rise to the false notion that ductal carcinoma in situ "maybe a precursor rather than just an ambiguous risk factor for invasive breast cancer," and once that is established in the minds of oncologists, women will forever be over-treated and unduly frightened. [Cancer, April 10 2006 online]
Many women are inappropriately alarmed that they have invasive cancer and are subsequently prescribed radiation and other toxic therapies, when they have noninvasive, non-life threatening growths within their milk ducts, nothing more. |

Several more very large scale examinations of the schizophrenia-cancer relationship have been carried out in the past 20 years. W. |

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is considered to be more dangerous than BCC because it can spread to other parts of the body.
Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It can spread very quickly and, unless caught early, can be very difficult to treat. It develops from cells called melanocytes in the outer layer of the skin. Melanomas usually start in moles or in areas of abnormal-looking skin

Unfortunately, the risk of one type of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) was found to be increased by selenium supplementation. Further research is needed to clarify selenium's role in cancer prevention.
SOURCES OF SELENIUM
Selenium is found in some soils in the United States and Canada. Since vegetables and grains are transported from different areas, people generally receive enough selenium in their diet. Brazil nuts are especially high in selenium, although they do vary in their content. Food sources of selenium can be seen in Graph 13-1. |

Professor James Kirkland reported 47% more cancer treatment-related malignancies in niacin-deficient rats.27 Chemotherapy damages DNA, not only of the cancer cells, but in developing blood cells in the bone marrow, causing new treatment-related cancers, such as leukemia and cancer of the bone marrow. |
