| A number of experiments conducted in test-tube and animal Cancer models have shown that Green tea polyphenols inhibit Cancer by blocking the formation of cancer-causing compounds, such as nitrosamines, suppressing the activation of carcinogens, and detoxifying or trapping cancer-causing agents. The forms of Cancer that appear to be best prevented by Green tea are cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, including cancers of the stomach, small intestine, pancreas, and colon; lung cancer; estrogen-related cancers, including most breast cancers; and prostate Cancer. |
| Although important in fighting all of these cancers, Green tea is especially important in preventing breast and prostate Cancer.
In contrast to green tea's protective effects, population studies seem to indicate that black tea consumption may increase the risk of certain cancers, including Cancer of the rectum, gallbladder, and endometrium.

Cancer. A number of animal studies have shown that the polyphenols in Green tea may offer significant protection against cancers of the pancreas, colon, stomach, lung, and small intestine. It is believed that they do this by blocking the formation of cancer-causing compounds such as nitroamines, suppressing the activation of carcinogens, and detoxifying cancer-causing agents. Other compounds in Green tea provide protection from the effects of repeated exposure to gamma radiation, preventing the development of thyroid Cancer caused by radiation treatment. |
| Colorectal Cancer and food poisoning. Green tea catechins kill many types of foodborne bacteria, especially Clostridium bacteria, which are associated with colon Cancer. Laboratory studies with animals have found that the regular consumption of Green tea catechins prevents the growth of colorectal tumors.
• Diabetes. In people with diabetes, Green tea extracts suppress the formation of the "sticky" blood proteins called glycosylation products, which can cause small blood vessels to thicken and leak. |
| Ll Several herbs can be used to lower the risk of developing liver Cancer. Bitter orange contains monoterpenes, which stop liver tumors before they can get started. Take 1 cup of the tea daily; use 1 teaspoon (2 to 3 grams) per cup. (See TEAS in Part Three.) Green tea prevents liver Cancer development—as long as viral hepatitis is not present—if soy lecithin is also taken. Drink 2 to 5 cups of Green tea a day, or take 250 milligrams of green-tea catechins three times daily. Licorice and Scutellaria can be used together in tea form to help prevent hepatitis C from progressing to liver Cancer. |

| Cirrhosis of the liver and liver Cancer. Researchers have found that, on average, individuals who consumed large amounts of Green tea have lower levels of certain liver enzymes in their blood, which suggests that Green tea may help prevent liver damage. Up to 30 percent of the weight of a Green tea leaf consists of potent antioxidant catechins. These compounds help to protect the linings of red blood cells and liver cells from damage from oxygen free radicals released by toxins and caused by imbalances of micro-nutrients in the bloodstream.

The flavonoids are another group of plant pigments that provide remarkable protection against Cancer, heart disease, and strokes. These compounds are largely responsible for the colors of fruits and flowers. Flavonoids act as powerful antioxidants in providing protection against oxidative and free-radical damage (cellular damage caused by highly reactive toxic molecules). Good dietary sources of flavonoids include citrus fruits, berries, onions, parsley, legumes, Green tea, and red wine. |

But the researchers thought it might get even better for Green tea drinkers. They suspect that heavy drinkers of Green tea might be consuming enough cathechin to, in the words of head researcher Jerzy Jankun, "Reduce... the size of cancers already formed."104 That's right. Green tea may not only prevent Cancer but also shrink tumors. |

| The fact that so many people have been told that Green tea is an effective way to fight and perhaps even prevent Cancer tells us much about how serious mainstream news, the federal government, and most doctors are about really fighting Cancer. Were they that serious, they would be plastering the news on billboards and telling people about it in public service announcements. Instead most Americans remain ignorant of the fact, no doubt developing Cancer and undergoing expensive and unpleasant ordeals to rid them of a disease that could have been prevented for just pennies a day.

Green tea is not only a satisfying beverage but a rich source of polyphenols—compounds that show great promise as potent Cancer fighters. People who regularly drink Green tea have lower rates of stomach, lung, esophageal, pancreatic, and colon Cancer than those who don't. A particularly interesting study showed that even people who smoked but drank Green tea had significantly lower Cancer rates than those who smoked but didn't drink Green tea. |

Recendy, numerous studies have confirmed that compounds in Green tea called polyphenols can protect against Cancer. In fact, when applied to the skin of animals, Green tea polyphenols have been shown to prevent skin tumors from forming after exposure to known carcinogens and excessive sunlight. Skin creams containing Green tea polyphenols are now being sold at natural food stores. In addition to fighting Cancer, Green tea skin care products are very soothing and are especially good for sensitive or irritated skin. |

Cancels out Cancer. If Cancer is a frequent visitor to your family tree, Green tea might be your new best friend. Studies show it fights cancers of the breast, stomach, colon, prostate, and skin. But it doesn't stop there. Green tea can even help chemotherapy patients get the most out of their treatment. Often during chemotherapy, Cancer cells stop responding to the drugs. But a study in Germany showed Green tea could make the resistant Cancer cells start responding again.
Drowns your risk of mouth Cancer. |
| Researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York discovered that Green tea combined with curcumin, from the spice turmeric, creates a cancer-fighting superhero that drastically slows the growth of Cancer cells from a human mouth.
Battles breast Cancer. There's good news for women who regularly drink Green tea. Five or more cups a day could mean you have a better chance of surviving breast Cancer. In addition, if your doctor discovers the Cancer in an early stage, it's less likely to spread to lymph nodes. |
| Asians also drink lots of Green tea, which may protect against several types of Cancer. Green tea contains antioxidants called polyphenols that may be responsible for its cancer-protective effect.
A recent study suggests a combination of these two Asian staples could be the secret. Scientists found that the polyphenol in Green tea did not fight prostate Cancer cells in the laboratory by itself. But when combined with genistein, a substance found in soy, the solution halted the growth of prostate Cancer cells. |

Drowns your risk of mouth Cancer. If slowing down isn't your cup of tea, consider this — slowly drinking and holding Green tea in your mouth for a few seconds at a time keeps high levels of antioxidants in your mouth and throat. Scientists believe this could be why Green tea drinkers get fewer oral and esophageal cancers than other people. What a great reason to relax over a cup. |

Other studies show that compounds in oolong and black tea (which is Green tea that has been baked and fermented) also inhibit Cancer in animals.
You can expect plain old Lipton's and Twining's tea, as well as other common brands of black tea, to possess these anticancer agents. But for the most potent anticancer effect, drink Green tea, usually found in Asian markets and restaurants. It contains the most anticancer substances called catechins. The Japanese have identified one catechin in Green tea as especially potent: epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). |

| Soybean compounds also block formation of one of the world's most dreaded carcinogens—nitrosamines, which can lead to liver Cancer. In fact, soy substances did the job better than vitamin C, which is put into cured meats explicitly to inhibit nitrosamines.
Thumbs Up: TEA: THE ANTICANCER DRINK
Develop an enthusiasm for tea. It has newfound anticancer potential. "It's exciting to discover that black tea, Green tea and oolong tea all have anticancer effects," says Cancer researcher Dr. John Weisburger, of the American Health Foundation. |
| Vegetable chemicals may retard promotion of the Cancer and formation of tumors.
• It also seems smart to drink tea, particularly Green tea, and eat more legumes, although the evidence is less solid.
• If you have been diagnosed with lung Cancer, adding anticancer chemicals to your diet by eating more vegetables, specifically tomatoes, broccoli and those rich in carotenoids such as beta carotene, lycopene and lutein, may help fight the Cancer, prolonging life.
PANCREATIC CANCER: AN ORANGE A DAY? |
| Such a finding makes sense, say researchers, because the allium vegetables possess known anticancer compounds, and have saved many a laboratory animal from death by Cancer. Onions and garlic, for example, contain sulfur-ous compounds that have been tested in labs and found to block Cancer.
Thumbs Up: TEA-TOTALING JAPANESE

In animal models, Green tea was fed to or used topically on mice whose skin Cancer was induced by exposure to ultraviolet radiation B. Continual oral feedings of Green tea was shown to significantly decrease tumor induction. Topical exposure of mice to Green tea was not as effective as the ingestion of the tea. The scientists concluded that Green tea might reduce the induction of skin Cancer in humans from ultraviolet radiation.
Green tea also has offered protection in animal models against lung Cancer and colon Cancer at all stages of Cancer. |
| Drinking four cups of Green tea a day has demonstrated the ability to decrease the initiation and the progression of Cancer. More excitingly, Green tea has demonstrated the ability to regress established papillomas, which are precursors to tumors. However, according to Hasan Mukhtar, a well-known researcher in the field of Green tea polyphenols, "Decaffeinated Green tea is not as effective against skin Cancer as the caffeine rich variety." Green tea may reduce the risk of skin Cancer in people who are exposed to solar ultraviolet radiation. |
| Green tea also has offered protection in animal models against lung Cancer and colon Cancer at all stages of Cancer. The American Institute for Cancer Research has stated that there is convincing evidence that Green tea reduces the risk of stomach Cancer, perhaps due to EGCG.
Eritadenine (e-RIT-uh-de-neen). Eritadenine is a phytochemical isolated from shiitake mushrooms. In a study of Japanese men, participants who ate four ounces of fresh shiitake mushrooms or two ounces of dried shiitake mushrooms had a 10-percent drop in cholesterol within one week. |
| It is believed that EGCG has the ability to inhibit the action of the enzyme urokinase, which enables Cancer cells to invade other cells and metastasize. |
| It protected against lung and stomach Cancer in all three stages of carcinogenesis in a variety of animal studies. Green tea is a potential inhibitor of urokinase—an enzyme that helps cancers to invade cells and spread throughout the body. An intake of four cups of Green tea a day has been shown to inhibit the progression of Cancer.
