| Are Cheap Vitamins as Potent as Expensive Ones?
Any brand of a single vitamin, such as vitamin C, is usually fine, but the potency varies among brands of multivitamins. Some less expensive brands, such as Wal-Mart's Spring Valley, are well-made, but some supermarket and drugstore brands may not be as reliable.
Name brands that are made by divisions of major pharmaceutical companies usually deliver what they claim.
Examples: Centrum and One-A-Day.

Coming up with a brand naming used to be an afterthought," says Bill Trombetta, a professor of pharmaceutical marketing. "But today, pharmaceutical companies realize that they need to brand drugs as early as they can and build equity in the brand."113 The stakes are so high that drug companies now work with branding agencies to select just the right name ... a name like Zoloft, uplifting and scientific all at the same time. The hard, decisive sounds of the letters X, Z, C, and D are attractive to drug namers. According to James L. |

When I wrote my first book, the United States Government said in effect if I mentioned any product by brand name or wrote where you could obtain any product that I recommended, the books would be confiscated and burned, and I believe I would have most assuredly been arrested and prosecuted under some trumped-up charge of "practicing medicine without a license" or deceiving the public. I have been in court with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission as well as other government regulators regarding these issues. I have decided to put myself in grave danger by writing this book. |

When the depressed actors requested a specific brand, doctors wrote a prescription for that brand 50 percent of the time. When the actors asked for any antidepressant, they were given a prescription three-quarters of the time. And when they didn't even ask for a drug, they were given a prescription one-third of the time.96
There are other creative (read: manipulative) ways to get the brands directly out to the consumers, doctors be damned. |

It is my opinion that if somebody calls me on the phone, or meets me on the street, or sends me an e-mail or writes me a letter and asks me a question about what type of dog food I give my dog, I am free to mention the product by brand name. I believe that if somebody in any form asks me a question about anything, I am free to express my opinion and state what I want to state without fear of reprisal from the Federal Trade Commission.
Imagine how silly it would be to be on the Larry King show and have Larry ask me, "Kevin, what type of bottled water do you drink? |
| The FTC wrote back and said yes I can even though these publications give products by brand name, obviously promote and recommend those products for purchase and give ordering information. So the FTC immediately reversed their position, but the reason was because " Consumer Reports accepts no outside advertising, no free test samples, and has no agenda other than the interests of consumers." It also went on to say that I could sell these Consumer Reports publications that promoted products because "more than 100 testing experts work in seven major technical departments ... |
| If in fact I owned stock in a particular water company and went on Larry King and mentioned that water company by brand name and told people, "Yes, buy XYZ bottled water. It's the best water in the world. It's the water I drink. It's the water I think everyone should drink, etc., etc., etc." If I had a financial interest with the sale of that product, or in the success of that company, then certainly I would be promoting that product, and I have agreed with the Federal Trade Commission that I will not do that. |

Lawson, when twenty-four brands of enteric-coated garlic were analyzed for tablet dissolution using an approved method (USP dissolution method 724A), only one brand released the amount of allicin claimed on the label.16 The second-best brand released only 44 percent of label claim, and 75 percent of the brands released less than 10 percent of label claim. Failure to deliver an effective dosage of allicin will most assuredly lead to failure to lower cholesterol or blood pressure.
Dr. Lawson discovered two major problems with garlic supplements. |

| Searle, the chemical company that held the patent to aspartame, which by the way is the active ingredient under the brand name NutraSweet. Previously, in 1980, the FDA Board of Inquiry comprised of three independent scientists confirmed that aspartame "might induce brain tumors." The FDA actually banned aspartame based on this finding only to have Searle Chairman Donald Rumsfeld (yes, this is the same Donald Rumsfeld who is currently the secretary of defense) come to aspartame's aid. Mr. Rumsfeld used his political connections, pulled some strings and got aspartame approved by the FDA. |

When selecting a fish oil supplement, it is essential to use a brand that you trust. Quality control is an absolute must to ensure that the product is free from heavy metals, especially mercury, damaged fats (lipid peroxides), PCBs, and dioxins and other contaminants. Some brands that we recommend are Natural Factors, Carlson, and Nordic Naturals. These brands are widely available at your local health food store. For children, we particularly like the Carlson brand flavored cod-liver oil or the one made by Nordic Naturals. |

Frito-Lay: Dangerous junk food that contributes to obesity, heart disease, cancer, depression and other serious diseases.
Pepsi-Cola: Toxic beverages that destroy bone mineral density and poison consumers with chemical sweeteners in diet drinks.
Gatorade: Crap sports drinks that contain artificial colors made from petrochemical derivatives.
Tropicana: A low-end fruit juice brand engaged in deceptive labeling for many of its products. |

The availability of generics (which cost far less than branded versions) depends upon the length of time a drug has been on the market. Current laws allow drug makers to hold sole rights to sell a new drug for twenty years, after which generics can be made and sold at much lower prices. |

By changing the brand name from Prozac to Sarafem—packaged in a lavender-colored pill and promoted with images of sunflowers and smart women—Lilly created a brand that better aligned with the personality of the condition for a hand-in-glove fit."35

Those three pass on a more consistent basis than the products being distributed in retail, in fact. This is the rare case where the internet is offering better quality and more honest products than you can buy at retail. Even some of the big retail chains selling hoodia weight loss products are selling counterfeit hoodia gordonii. |

Before Prozac, the brand names of drugs were generally some simplified version of their scientific and generic names. For example: haloperidol (generic name) became Haldol (brand name). Prozac, the scientific name of which is fluoxetine, was the first drug whose public name was specifically created to evoke saleable images and ideas: in this case, the "pro" connoting positivity, and the "zac" the reassurance and exactitude of science. |

The organic milk controversy extends to organic soy milk as well. Horizon Organic's parent company, Dean Foods, also bought out Silk, the leading organic soy milk brand in the United States. Dean Foods has pushed for lower organic standards in the United States and to allow industrial-style production to be called "organic. |

To create the free consumer guide, Adams reviewed pomegranate juice product ingredients, comparing them to the claims implied by the pictures and words on the front labels of such products. Some products made primarily with apple juice show no apples at all on the front label, instead depicting pomegranates and blueberries while claiming "100% Juice!" in big letters. |

Popular peanut butters (hydrogenated oils + sugar)
Peanut butter presents a common grocery shopping pitfall. At first, it appears to be an excellent choice for healthy eating, but a closer inspection of the ingredients label reveals otherwise. Virtually all brand-name peanut butters contain metabolic disrupters: hydrogenated oils and refined sugars. |
