Too Profitable to Cure

Natural animal insulins were highly purified and posed no significant threat of bse. Human insulin that was originally cultured in a beef medium containing components was also highly purified. Neither posed any risk of exposure to bse. Yet the importation of synthetic insulins by Novo and Aventis was unheralded, while the FDA repeatedly reminded individuals of the risks they were taking by importing animal insulins. Hypocrisy? Discrimination? Or just callous disregard for diabetic lives?

In 1996, ten people died in England due to a new strain of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD, the human equivalent of bse), which the British government linked to eating meat from cows infected with bse. CJD has now killed a total of 100 people in Britain.26 Researchers at Yale University suggest the disease is capable of mutating into different forms. They also speculate that CJD/BSE might be more widespread than originally thought. bse first started showing up in England in the mid-eighties. In 1988, the government required that all cattle showing symptoms of bse be destroyed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised that, at a bare minimum, the feeding of ruminants to ruminants had to be outlawed in order to prevent an outbreak of bse. On August 4, 1997, almost a year and a half after the FDA promised a speedy response to the threat of mad cow, new animal feed restrictions took effect. "The United States has no bse," the agency declared, "and the final rule provides the necessary feed controls . . . should bse occur here." The FDA described its new ban as "mammalian-to-ruminant, with exceptions.

Eating the meat of an animal with bse may lead to a disease similar to bse in humans called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, or vCJD. According to the USDA, as of December 1,2003, a total of 153 cases ofvQDhad been reported in the world: 143 in the United Kingdom, 6 in France, and I each in Canada, Ireland, Italy, and the United States. BSE was first reported among cattle in the United Kingdom in 1986 and has been a major concern ever since. The outbreak in the United Kingdom may have started from the feeding of scrapie-contaminated sheep meat-and-bone meal to cattle.

BSE contamination could be totally eliminated in the production cell transfer and purification process. Despite the fact that equal claims for the purity of natural insulins could be made, the FDA continues to use bse scare tactics to prevent importation of natural insulins. Their endorsement of "uncontaminated" synthetic products merely added another layer of protection for the pharmaceuticals. The omission of informing the public about the purity of animal insulins was not an oversight.
These, of course, were guaranteed to be free of bse. The shroud of secrecy called "propriety information and trade secrets" is employed by the pharmaceuticals whenever questions become too pointed. It is well known in the industry that the production of human insulin, which begins with a beef broth cultural component, produces the same bse risk as does natural (animal) insulins. With a 14-or-more-step purification process, animal insulins are both pure and safe. Diabetics and you, the juror, should be concerned that any product derived from animals might carry a disease-causing agent.

Scientific research has linked this practice to the spread of both mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy or bse) and avian bird flu. Manure and animal waste -- This can include cattle manure, swine waste, and poultry waste. It can also contain wood, sand, rocks, dirt, sawdust and other non-food substances. Animal byproducts -- This is often categorized as "animal protein products" and may appear as rendered feathers, hair, skin, hooves, blood, internal organs, intestines, beaks and bones. These may also include dead horses, euthanized cats and dogs, and road kill.

A number of nonprofit organizations, including the Public Citizen, Farm Sanctuary, and Organic Consumers Association, believe that the United States is leaving itself wide open for a bse epidemic. Academics such as Steven Best, PhD, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of Texas, and Michael Greger, MD, agree with this assessment. According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, there should be concern over the animal protein that has been imported from the United Kingdom into the United States between 1998 and December 2000.

Organic farmers stopped the unnatural practice of feeding cows to cows long before the bse epidemic began in the 1980s and are also prohibited from the conventional practice of pouring warble-fly insecticide along the animals' spines, which is also thought to make cattle more susceptible to bse. Only time will tell how big a health problem bse and vCJD will eventually be, and in the meantime the safest option is to eat only organic beef. Hormones—a growing problem Most meat today, whether chicken, beef, pork, or lamb, has received hormone treatment of one kind or another.

It is believed that eating meat products from affected animals can cause a disorder in people called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCID). Both bse and vCID may not cause obvious symptoms for up to twenty years after the original infection and both are always fatal. A three-year study at Harvard University determined that the chances of bse entering the United States and threatening consumers are "extremely low." However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) tests only some 5,000 cows for bse annually.

In addition, the FDA prohibits the use of most mammalian protein, particularly meat, bone meal, and nerve tissue such as brain and spinal cord, in the manufacture of animal feeds given to ruminants because this kind of feeding practice is believed to have initiated and amplified the outbreak of bse in the United Kingdom. To reduce the risk of ingesting beef with bse, we recommend taking the following steps: • Buy beef only from a trusted source, and know the country of origin. As of2004, supermarkets were required to post this information.
Scrapie is a disease of sheep that is related to bse in cattle. In addition, there is strong evidence that the outbreak in cattle was amplified in the United Kingdom by feeding rendered bovine meat-and-bone meal to young calves. BSE has now been reported in cattle throughout Europe, and a third case was reported in Canada in January 2005. In the United States, a single case was reported in December 2003, and wild game, such as deer and elk, have been affected with a similar disease known as chronic wasting disease (CWD).

Described by the microbiologist Professor Richard Lacey as "fake meat," much of what is for sale in supermarkets and butcher's shops contains growth hormones, antibiotics, and pesticide residues and, at worst, could be infected with bse. BSE—is it a serious risk? The infectious agent thought to be responsible for bse is called a prion. It latches on to proteins in the brain, changing them and thereby triggering disease. It is now proven to pass from species to species and into humans.

However, it has not been attributed to the new variant form of CJD, which is what happened when bse broke loose in the United Kingdom. These hunters died of what is classified as the sporadic form of CJD, which occurs in about one in a million people. Government officials feel that these deaths were not caused by the hunters eating meat from the deer or elk they hunted, which might have had CWD. Instead, government officials maintain that the hunters died from a naturally occurring form of CJD.
The FDA had also initiated the testing brains of cattle who might be suspect for bse. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services reported that from May 10, 1990 through December 31, 2001, the veterinary laboratories tested a total of 20,141 brains from cattle in the United States. This includes "neurologically ill cattle found on the farm. Neurologically ill cattle presented at veterinary diagnostic labs or hospitals. Rabies negative cattle. Cattle condemned at slaughter for neurological disease. Non-ambulatory (down/fallen stock.)
On the surface this would seem reassuring, however, the number of cattle brains tested for bse is quite limited compared to the number of cattle slaughtered in any given time period. The Public Citizen, an organization that investigates problems within the government, notes, "In 2000, approximately 2,300 brains were tested out of 35 million cattle slaughtered."18 This is indeed a small percentage tested of the total animals slaughtered. As of July 2001 the National Agriculture Statistics Services estimated that there was a total of 105.8 million head of cattle and calves in the United States.
Detecting and Reporting Mad Cow Disease in the United States Given the situation in Germany, the question begs to be asked: Are the United States and Canada doing an adequate job in insure that bse is not in these countries? In my opinion, no! Both countries are still using the old detection method of sending the brains of suspect cattle to veterinary labs. (The main lab, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories, is located in Ames, Iowa.) According to Arthur Davis, Chief of the Pathobiology Laboratory, "Minimum time after collection of the specimen for results would be 8 days.
If these studies are accurate, what government action is being undertaken to see that the human meat supply is free from bse? What steps are being taken by government agencies to insure that humans are not infected with CJD from eating contaminated meat? I can't help but wonder that if the U.S. and Canadian governments are so lax about the possibility of CJD and mad cow disease existing in North America and thteatening human beings, how could they possibly care what might be in pet food?

Joint efforts of the USDA and the FDA so far seem to have been responsible for keeping bse out of this country. These organizations say that they have a "multiple firewall" system (including feed bans, import controls, and a surveillance program) that can keep it from spreading. While experts say no cows in the United States currently have mad cow disease, a similar disorder known as wasting disease has been found in the wild deer and elk in South Dakota, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and parts of Canada. At the present time, there is no "fix" for bse.

The British deaths were believed to be caused by eating meat from cattle infected with bse. One possible cause of the disease in cattle appears to be the practice of mixing cattle byproducts into stockyard cattle feed. It was the use of infected stockyard renderings (ground parts of animal meat, fat, and bone from leftover byproducts of meat production) in feed mixer that was believed to have triggered the bse epidemic in England. But I Like Meat! Removing red meat from the diet is one definite way to improve your health.

You can also search the USDA site for "bovine spongiform encephalopathy" for information not readily apparent on the bse page. Since beef contains small amounts of oxalates, individuals prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones should limit their consumption of beef. See page 787 for more information. Beef is also a rich source of arginine, an amino acid necessary for replication of certain viruses, including the herpes simplex virus. People who have regular outbreaks of herpes should limit or avoid consumption of beef.
To reduce the risk of ingesting beef with bse, we recommend taking the following steps: • Buy beef only from a trusted source, and know the country of origin. As of2004, supermarkets were required to post this information. Ask how the cattle were raised, where they originated from, and how they were fed. • Consider using organic grass-fed beef rather than industrial beef in order to minimize your exposure to animal by-products through livestock feed. In most supermarkets the beef is usually industrial beef.
The USDA has restricted the importation of live ruminants, such as cows and sheep, and food products from these animals from bse countries since 1989, and from all European countries since 1997 after a second case in the United Kingdom in 1996 and a third in 2001 that spread to other countries in the European Union.
