Acomplia drug hype reveals mythology of prescription drugs, shortcut philosophy of American culture

So why is acomplia so remarkably popular even before it has been approved by the FDA? The reason it’s popular has nothing whatsoever to do with science or nutrition or health. It has to do with the seductive idea that we as Americans can pursue whatever lifestyles we want and yet have never have to face the consequences for making such decisions.

REPPED: In early clinical trials, acomplia is looking promising. But with only 3,000+ people tested so far, it's far from being approved by the FDA. And even as effective as acomplia appears to be in early tests, much of the hype is overblown: daily walking or cardiovascular exercise results in far more weight loss. So does giving up the consumption of soft drinks or refined carbohydrates like white flour or added sugars. There are far more effective ways to lose weight and keep it off than popping a diet pill. Yet the idea of a diet pill is seductive.

The story goes something like this: If you take this drug, acomplia, you will automatically eat less because your hunger will be turned off. And when you start losing weight, the first place you will lose body fat is your mid-section. The pounds will just melt away. And better yet, your cholesterol will go down and your blood pressure will return to healthy levels. But that's not all. The drug, miraculously, will also help you stop smoking. And if you're addicted to alcohol, it is also said you will stop drinking! But why stop there?
The seduction of acomplia is that it takes over our responsibilities. It allows us to shift control of our lives from our own conscious intentions to a prescription drug handed out to us by doctors. It is in this very mythology that the danger to Americans hides. Not in the drug itself -- it is the mythology that’s dangerous, not the chemical. The seductive qualities of this drug encourage people to release themselves from responsibility. They encourage people to disempower themselves, to shift their power to external influences.
They understand that they have the ability to alter their outcomes by making new decisions, by learning new information and by shaping their lives one day at a time, in a way that serves their long-term goals. If acomplia is approved, will likely be a blockbuster success regardless of whether or not it actually works. It will be a financial success because people are willing to pay almost anything to perpetuate the mythology that prescription drugs can release us from a lifetime of poor decisions. But there's more to this story!
And they have been victimized, they will claim, by this evil drug, acomplia, which has given them some strange side effects. And thus the cycle of playing the victim and demanding external recourse and will continue. This cycle will not end until individuals in America and elsewhere around the world have a reckoning -- that the power to shape their lives and their health outcomes rests entirely within themselves. They are responsible for their health outcome. No one else can take that responsibility for them.
The only reason we are not in perfect health today is because we have given up our power and, instead, put the responsibility for our health on drugs like acomplia that we think can save us from all of the bad decisions and lifestyle mistakes that we continue to make on a daily basis. Reality folks, is that a drug cannot replace good decisions. A chemical cannot reverse decades of being sedentary and refusing to get off your ass and go work out once in a while.

There's also the upcoming acomplia prescription drug, but I'm highly skeptical of the safety of this particular drug. Unlike the PYY nasal spray which is a natural hormone, this acomplia drug is not natural at all. It's not even available yet (still in testing) and yet people are asking for it by name at weight loss centers all over the country. Some people believe this acomplia drug will also help them stop smoking.

There's quite a lot of mythology being built up around this drug, and people are going to shocked, I think, to find that popping a pill won't excuse them from all their unhealthy lifestyle choices. Personally, I'm taking a wait-and-see stance on both acomplia and the PYY nasal spray.

And so far, acomplia looks like the closest solution we've seen yet. The real test, of course, will come when the potential side effects are fully examined. Will the drug be the next Vioxx or Fen-Phen? Unfortunately, we can no longer trust the drug safety review process of the FDA, meaning that even FDA approval is no guarantee that the drug is safe. We'll only know the answer to that question after a few million people start taking the pills. No doubt, obese Americans will be lining up to volunteer as guinea pigs for this one: weight loss with no effort? Sign me up!

The manufacturer, Sanofi-Aventis, is being especially careful to downplay the cosmetic weight-reducing potential of acomplia. Instead, they are highlighting other benefits, such as the improvement of lipid profiles. In three large clinical trials, acomplia resulted in promising metabolic improvements.840,841'842 Good HDL cholesterol rose and bad triglycerides dropped. Insulin efficiency improved and blood sugar levels came down. The positive changes were twice what researchers would have anticipated from weight loss alone.
Acomplia may help people quit smoking. There is even some hope that the compound may help people deal effectively with other drug dependencies, including the most prevalent one, alcohol.843 Whether acomplia lives up to such high expectations remains to be seen. It could take years to assess whether the drug is really safe enough for long-term use. Conclusions Losing excess weight is notoriously difficult, but it can have a profound effect on health. Dropping pounds can help lower blood pressure and get cholesterol under control, as well as alleviating the strain on arthritic joints.

Insulin efficiency improved and blood sugar levels came down. The positive changes were twice what researchers would have anticipated from weight loss alone. Such metabolic effects may be especially beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes. What really has millions of people excited, though, is Acomplia's ability to lower weight. After 1 year on the drug, subjects lost approximately 15 pounds, significantly more than those on placebo.

Finally, I'd like to add that if you're not engaging in regular physical exercise, there's no way you'll lose weight, no matter what supplement you're taking. So don't turn to hoodia, PYY nasal spray or any other diet pills and expect to drop the pounds without getting into a regular exercise routine.
