With Executive Orders, Obama Ends Guantanamo Prison Camp and CIA Interrogation Program

The days of waterboarding by U.S. operatives are over. At least on paper. Today, President Obama signed executive orders aimed at shutting down the Guantanamo Bay prison camp and ending secret CIA interrogation programs that blatantly used techniques of outright torture.

The Bush Administration, of course, insisted it never authorized the use of torture. (Wink wink!) Just give those war prisoners a long duration toilet swirly and we'll make believe it's a bath for their personal hygiene.

The illegal acts of torture authorized by the Bush Administration now make its top ex-officials international war criminals subject to arrest if they dare travel to other countries. So far, none have dared to test that theory by actually leaving the United States.

For his part, Obama has indicated little interest in prosecuting Bush Administration officials for their war crimes. But ending their illegal prison camp operations is at least a step in the right direction. It's a bold move by a new President that sends a strong statement to the world: There's a cleanup crew in the White House now, and we're ending the Bush era of war crimes.

Or, at least that's the optimistic view of the situation. The reality is that unless Obama actually pushes for the arrest and prosecution of the Bush war criminals, he's missing the whole point of justice in the first place. To allow the top Bush criminals to get away with their crimes against the People of the United States of America (not to mention their crimes against foreign nationals) is to indirectly condone their behavior. In order to send a real message that high crimes will not be tolerated in America, Obama needs to have these criminals arrested and brought to trial.

After all, America can't claim to be a lawful and just country when it is harboring international war criminals and refusing to investigate or prosecute them.

I say Obama should keep Guantanamo Bay open for a while and use it to jail Bush Administration war criminals. Hand the prison guards a bunch of broomsticks and digital cameras and see what happens…
