Viagra Maker Ends Bid for Over-The-Counter Status

After working long and hard on the deal, Viagra maker Pfizer has decided to pull out of the effort, ending its bid to unleash a wave of over-the-counter erections through a change in the drug's classification. Rather than Viagra being offered by prescription only, they wanted anyone to be able to walk into a store and buy it at the cashier. "Gimmie some o' them little blue pills, Jimmy! I need to get an eee-wreck-shun!"
Around 35 million men have taken Viagra, fortunately not all at the same time. Many claim to be suffering from "erectile dysfunction," but others simply wanted to remember what it was like to be 15 years old again with a bone in their pocket.
It's not yet clear whether a new effort from Pfizer will be coming soon, but onlookers say the withdrawal has put the company in an awkward position that may not be as satisfying to investors as they had hoped. With revenues now limp across the pharmaceutical industry, everyone seems to be looking for a way to prop up sagging sales, and it was hoped that an OTC offering would head Pfizer in a new direction, but now it looks as though this reversal will prevent Pfizer from getting a solid grip on the OTC market for some time to come.
