Public Citizen Urges FDA to Ban Avandia Following Liver Toxicity Reports

Once again, Public Citizen is doing the job the FDA refuses to do: Ban dangerous drugs that pose a safety threat to the American public. In a petition filed today, Public Citizen is asking the FDA to take Avandia off the market due to liver toxicity linked to several deaths. GlaxoSmithKline, of course, says Avandia is perfectly safe.
From Online.wsj.com: Avandia's safety record has been clouded since an analysis of studies released last year suggested it was linked to an increase in heart attacks. In November the FDA strengthened a black-box warning on Avandia telling doctors the product was linked to a potential increase in heart attack risk. The agency said the drug would remain on the market while a safety assessment continues. FDA officials have said there's been a split within the agency about whether to pull Avandia off the market or allow it to stay on the market with stronger warnings.... more
