For this reason, we recommend that supplements, typically in the form of vanadyl sulfate, be used cautiously or under your physician's guidance. If you're taking it on your own, dosages of vanadyl sulfate up to 1 mg (1,000 meg) daily should be completely safe. Your physician may recommend 5 to 25 mg daily.

VANADYL SULFATE
Studies have shown that vanadyl sulfate and bis (maltolato) oxova-nadium (BMOV), a trace mineral, promote sugar metabolism that helps lower blood glucose levels. vanadyl sulfate and BMOV may activate insulin receptors and reduce the amount of fatty acids carried in the blood (triglycerides). Small oral doses of vanadyl sulfate and BMOV do not alter insulin sensitivity in nondiabetic people, but it does improve insulin sensitivity in liver and muscle cells in people with type 2 diabetes. |

Take 300-600 mg of alpha lipoic acid a day to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. vanadyl sulfate improves glucose tolerance; take 100-300 mg a day. Take 3 g of fish oils a day to support the nervous system and assist in proper insulin function. B-complex vitamins are involved in glucose metabolism, and should be taken at 50 mg a day. Biotin, taken at 7,000-15,000 meg a day, reduces the changes of diabetic neuropathies. This is a B vitamin so consider the amount included in your B-complex vitamin and adjust the dosage accordingly. |

Magnesium
The American Diabetes Association reports that 25 percent of diabetics are magnesium deficient (although other figures place this much higher), and that supplementing with this mineral can improve blood sugar control. Green vegetables such as spinach are good sources of magnesium, because the center of the chlorophyll molecule (which gives green vegetables their color) contains magnesium. |

Clinical trials have found a significant decrease in insulin requirements in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes after vanadyl sulfate therapy. They have also noted a decrease in cholesterol levels for both IDDM and NIDDM. It has also been found to stimulate glucose uptake and metabolism that leads to glucose normalization. In some cases it helps to restore insulin production in diabetic rats.

| Treated subjects received 50 mg vanadyl sulfate twice daily for 4 weeks, followed by a 4-week placebo phase. Modest improvements in fasting glucose and hepatic insulin resistance followed the treatment period and were sustained throughout the placebo period.73
Halberstam el al provided 100 mg vanadyl sulfate daily for 3 weeks to moderately obese type 2 diabetic and non-diabetic subjects. They observed a decrease in fasting plasma glucose and a significant improvement in insulin sensitivity in the type 2 diabetic subjects; however, no change was observed in the obese non-diabetic subjects. |
| Measurement of fasting plasma glucose and insulin-mediated glucose disposal during pre- and post-treatment periods suggested a beneficial effect of vanadyl sulfate on improving both hepatic and peripheral insulin sensitivity. These effects were sustained for up to 2 weeks after the vanadyl sulfate was discontinued.132

DOSAGE
Studies have used a form of vanadium that's combined with another substance to create vanadyl sulfate, which is an excellent form for absorption. The usual dose used in studies is 300 milligrams per day of vanadyl sulfate. With regard to elemental vanadium, up to 100 micrograms daily is thought to be safe.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
There is not a lot known about the side effects of vanadium and there have not been any long-term human studies to investigate adverse effects. Digestive upset was the main side effect in one human study where vanadyl sulfate was used. |

Vanadyl Sulfate
In the words of my friend the body builder, vanadyl sulfate makes him feel "pumped." Vanadyl mimics the action of the hormone insulin, which regulates the metabolism of carbohydrate and protein, breaking them down into a form that can be utilized by the cells to make energy. Serious body builders swear that within two or three weeks of taking vanadyl sulfate they feel and see a real difference in the size and strength of their muscles. The problem with vanadyl is that it can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, which can be dangerous. |

Small oral doses of vanadyl sulfate and BMOV do not alter insulin sensitivity in nondiabetic people, but it does improve insulin sensitivity in liver and muscle cells in people with type 2 diabetes. Two recent studies showed that after just 3-4 weeks of treatment with vanadyl sulfate (50 milligrams twice daily), people with insulin-resistant type 2 diabetes experienced improved insulin sensitivity. vanadyl sulfate at the dose used was well tolerated and resulted in modest reductions of fasting plasma glucose. |

Vitamins Biotin
In experimental models of type 2 diabetes, biotin lowered post-prandial glucose levels, improved insulin response to a glucose load, and decreased insulin resistance.133 Although biotin has not been evaluated in humans for its effect on insulin resistance, this vitamin has demonstrated an ability to improve glucose metabolism in humans on dialysis and with type 2 diabetes,134 thus warranting future investigation. |

Over a six-week period, a small group of people with type 2 diabetes were given 75—300 mg of vanadyl sulfate per day.238 Only in the groups receiving 150 mg or 300 mg was glucose metabolism improved, fasting blood sugar decreased, and another marker for chronic high blood sugar reduced. At the 300 mg level, total cholesterol decreased, although not without an accompanying reduction in the protective HDL cholesterol. None of the amounts improved insulin sensitivity. |

Although there was no evidence of toxicity after six weeks of vanadyl sulfate supplementation, gastrointestinal side effects were experienced by some of the participants taking 150 mg per day and by all of the participants taking 300 mg per day. The long-term safety of the large amounts of vanadium needed to help people with type 2 diabetes (typically 100 mg per day) remains unknown. Many doctors expect that amounts this high may prove to be unsafe in the long term. |

Available in the form of vanadyl sulfate, the biologically active form of vanadium.
Usual dose is 10 mg. half an hour before working out.
Diabetics should check with their doctor for specific dosage.
Toxicity and Warning Signs of Excess:
Can easily be toxic if taken in synthetic form. (See section 334, "Cautions.")
Personal Advice:
This is not one of the minerals that needs to be supplemented. A good fish dinner will supply you with the vanadium you need.
