INDICATIONS AND USAGE
¦ Nervousness and insomnia
¦ Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
Bugleweed is used for mild thyroid hyperfunction associated with disturbances of the autonomic nervous system. It is also used for tension and pain in the breast (mastodynia).
CONTRAINDICATIONS
The drug is contraindicated in hypofunction of the thyroid and thyroid gland enlargement without function disturbance. There should not be any simultaneous administration of thyroid hormone preparations. |

Selenium seems to bind with some of these bad guys, creating inactive complexes and helping to rid the system of them.
The thyroid is dependent on selenium to function properly. Selenium is a component of the enzyme that helps convert T4 (thyroxine), the

TO in less-active thyroid hormone, to the active one, T3 (triiodothyronine). If you're on conventional thyroid medication like Synthroid, which is pure T4, you need selenium to convert it. Deficiencies of selenium, though probably rare in North America, may impair thyroid function. |

Other risk factors include untreated thyroid disease (especially increased thyroid hormone production, or hyperthyroidism) or overuse of thyroid supplements, kidney disease, inflammation, smoking, certain medications, and especially rheumatoid and other inflammatory forms of arthritis. And, of course, lack of weight-bearing stress, which stimulates bones to remodel.
As you learned in our menopause chapter, one of the three estrogen receptors we discussed helps bone formation. |

Since thyroid hormones affect every cell of the body, a deficiency will usually result in a large number of signs and symptoms including low body temperature, intolerance to cold, weight gain or an inability to lose weight, depression, lack of concentration, hair loss, and fatigue. If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to check with your doctor to rule out an underactive thyroid.
Your doctor can conduct a blood test that measures thyroid hormone levels. |

Lab tests confirmed that Sally's estrogen levels and thyroid activity were low. She also had moderately elevated fasting blood sugar (95) and fasting insulin (14 mcIU/ml) levels, suggestive of prediabetes. Although the exercise probably helped to control her blood sugar, all of the energy bars and drinks she consumed most likely boosted her insulin levels.
Treatment included a bioidentical estrogen product and Armour's natural-source thyroid hormone (which contains both of the major thyroid hormones). |

I asked my doctor — a brilliantly talented surgeon who has removed the thyroids of thousands of young women in the Massachusetts area — why I developed a lump on my thyroid (the size of a lemon, it turned out) and why so many other young women are getting them too. Could mine have had anything to do with the fact that I grew up a mile from the largest polluting trash-burning facility in the state? "Hmmm," he replied, giving me a funny look. "Don't know. Nobody has ever asked me that before. We don't know why thyroid lumps happen, they just do." It was the same story with the infertility. |

Also, for low thyroid, it's critical to know that the blood tests are horribly unreliable. If you're tired, achy, have weight gain and you're cold and intolerant, find a holistic doctor to give you a prescription to Armor thyroid. It's all natural and very effective. It can make all the difference in the world in pain and how you feel overall.
Mike: So, when you say watch out for the blood tests, you're saying they can be inaccurate.
Teitelbaum: Yes.
Mike: A lot of people are misdiagnosed with thyroid malfunctions just from blood tests, correct?
Teitelbaum: No. |

Also significant is the finding that hypothyroid cancer patients live longer than normal thyroid patients (mean 14.5 vs. 11.1 months).
It is interesting to note that foods such as soybeans, turnips, cauliflower, rutabagas, cabbage, peaches, peanuts, mustard, broccoli and spinach contain substances called glyco-sinolates which interfere with the absorption of iodine and inhibit normal thyroid gland function. These foods are also reported to protect against cancer. Indole 3-carbinol, a type of glycosinate found commonly in cruciferous vegetables is reported to reduce cancer risk. |

TSH is the trigger from the brain that tells your thyroid gland to make thyroid hormone.) You can also do a prescreen yourself: Every morning, as soon as you wake up and before getting out of bed, put a thermometer under your tongue for three minutes. If your under-the-tongue temperature is less than 98 degrees Fahrenheit, you are likely hypothyroid. Repeat the test every day for two weeks.

Adequate levels of thyroid hormones are necessary in infants for normal development of the central nervous system, in children for normal skeletal growth and maturation, and in adults for normal function of multiple organ and systems. thyroid hormones increase the activity of membrane-bound enzymes, increase heat production, and stimulate oxygen consumption. thyroid hormones also affect tissue growth and maturation, help regulate lipid metabolism, and increase intestinal absorption of carbohydrates. thyroid hormones and dopamine have similar chemical structures, and influence one another. |

In the short term the thyroid hormones can compensate for the sluggish adrenal output, but in time the thyroid gland may also under-produce, leading to thyroid hypo-function. This slows down your metabolic rate - and the slower your metabolism, the more likely you are to put on weight.
Secondly, hormonal glands in the body can be adversely affected by the antibodies that have developed to attack food proteins. Thyroiditis is an example of an auto-immune condition that immune-complexes to food can trigger. |

The weight gain that is often characteristic of menopause may be related to low thyroid as well as to low estrogen. Both hormones tend to decline in women in their early to midfifties. Although research is limited, high levels of insulin are sometimes associated with low thyroid hormone activity, with the combination also encouraging weight gain.

| THE THYROID: THE MASTER GLAND OF METABOLISM
Before we go too much further in discussing metabolism, it is important for you and your doctor to make sure that your thyroid gland is functioning properly. This small gland is just about the same size and shape and is in the same location as a small bow tie. The thyroid gland secretes two hormones that are crucial for regulating metabolism: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). The numbers refer to the number of iodine atoms each molecule of hormone contains. |

Because the thyroid gland regulates virtually every metabolic process in the body, an alteration in its output can have major effects on human functioning. Additionally, some studies suggest thyroid activity affects both the structure of the hippocampus and the enzymes present in the brain that regulate the metabolic rate of neurons, so impaired functioning can lead to mental lethargy, memory loss, depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Once hypothyroidism is detected, doctors can readily treat it with a hormone replacement therapy.

Finally, Witebsky too became convinced: when an antigen from the thyroid gland was introduced into the body, the body's fighter antibodies could mistakenly damage the patient's own cells in devastating blasts of self-sabotage, resulting in thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism. Together, Rose and Witebsky published their findings.

The thyroid gland is best known for its metabolic function affecting weight. Estrogen dominance renders the thyroid hormones dysfunctional, causing your body's metabolism to slow down. The resulting condition is called relative hypothyroidism. In addition, the changes in your body's blood sugar levels—some of which occur naturally with age and some of which are due to a hormone imbalance—are also linked to weight gain. As the body's progesterone production decreases with age and estrogen becomes dominant, your body releases insulin more rapidly and more often. |

| Though relatively rare, there are three other causes you might want to ask your doctor about.
• thyroid problems. Your thyroid controls how fast you use energy. If it produces too little thyroid hormone (a condition called hypothyroidism), you can gain weight. Ask your doctor for a simple blood test if you regularly feel cold and fatigued.
• Heredity. Genetics can play a strong role in weight gain. You could have too little of the hormone that signals you are full, or a speedy metabolism that processes fat a little too efficiently, which means you store it away like a squirrel before winter. |

Also, nutritional researchers have identified that in some cases soy products act as a potent antithyroid agent, suppressing thyroid function and causing or worsening hypothyroidism. Because soy products have the potential to be counterproductive to efforts to eliminate estrogen dominance, we recommend eliminating all soy products and other phytoestrogens from your diet. We have found that most people don't miss soy products and can easily find many enjoyable alternatives. |

Kelp was first used medicinally to treat enlarged thyroid glands. Physicians didn't know why kelp was effective, until it was discovered that it was exceptionally rich in iodine and that enlarged thyroids were caused by iodine deficiency. Because iodine stimulates the thyroid gland, which controls the metabolism, it was noted that those who took iodine lost weight more easily. From these observations, kelp was then used to assist in weight loss. It has been suggested that kelp's positive effects in assisting metabolism may help in lowering cholesterol. |
