In fact, Kessler says television ads never should have been allowed by the FDA in the first place (the FDA legalized drug ads in late 1997, after Kessler left his position there). Today, the United States is the only industrialized nation in the world to allow drug ads on television.
So how do drug ads lie to viewers? Essentially, they show healthy-looking actors roleplaying a fairy tale. At the beginning of the ad, the actors' lives appear to be in total disarray while they're suffering from some symptom (such as migraine headaches, restless legs, high cholesterol or whatever). |

Susan Linn made the statement in response to the Kaiser Family Foundation's report, "Food for Thought: television Food Advertising to Children in the United States."
"This invaluable report clearly demonstrates the extent to which children are targeted with television commercials for unhealthy food. And, unfortunately, TV ads on television are only the tip of the iceberg. television programs and movies also market unhealthy food to children through extensive brand licensing, promotions at fast food restaurants, and product placement," wrote Linn. |

End the patent protection for medicines, ban television ads, prosecute the criminals running the FDA and end the censorship of nutritional supplements.
I say let's teach America how to heal and end this business of disease. |
| Rather, it is implied by association through a carefully-construction formula of television influence that exerts its power through the messages that are not directly stated.
Beer companies pull the same trick when they show beer drinkers surrounded by sexy young women. The message that gets driven into the subconscious minds of male viewers is that drinking their beer will make them attractive to women. It doesn't have to be stated; it's presented in context, using body language and associative conditioning that the subconscious mind immediately understands. |

These drugs put children in a quiet, receptive state where they can sit in front of the television for hours and soak up all the programming they need," explained Dr. Tennah. "They're miracle drugs. I intend on prescribing them to all my patients."
Share prices for ConPhuzer rose $2.37 on the news of the drug approval by the FDA, and then leaped another $12.62 on the announcement that television Deficiency Disorder had been discovered. |
| Television Deficiency Disorder is a serious condition brought on by a lack of television programming. Victims display excessive intelligence quotients (I.Q.s), an exaggerated sense of self esteem, and "suspiciously high" levels of physical activity that keep them strangely thin. "These victims stray from societal norms," explained Dr. Tennah. "With their heightened cognitive function but lack of exposure to sitcoms, reality shows and shaped news programs, they are unable to interact with normal people in society."

| Back in the United States, parents, schoolteachers and librarians are being urged to help boost the television time of children. They are also warned that reading, exercising, family interaction and play time all interfere with quality television programming, so such activities should be limited, psychiatrists say.
Finally, psychiatrists are also urging all parents to realize that this report is a satire piece, meaning that it is entirely fictitious. |

REPPED: television drug ads engage in such blatant deceptions and exaggerations that even the medical journals are starting to condemn the practice. This week, the Annals of Family Medicine published an analysis of popular drug advertisements that concluded the ads essentially lie to the public about the benefits of pharmaceuticals while utterly ignoring alternative health strategies like dietary or lifestyle changes. |

Television Programming
Let's look at television watching specifically. A study by the American Diabetes Association followed 41,811 men ages 40 to 75 over a ten-year period. A direct association was observed between television watching and risk of developing diabetes. The men who reported sitting in front of a TV more than nineteen hours per week were more than 150 percent more likely to become diabetic than those who watched less than three hours a week. "Bubble gum for the eyes," Steve Allen called it. |

Finally, psychiatrists are also urging all parents to realize that this report is a satire piece, meaning that it is entirely fictitious. It does serve, however, as a metaphor for the incessant disease mongering and "screening & treatment" scams being operated today by drug companies, disease non-profit groups and the psychiatric community. |
| This is how medicine operates today, where virtually every popular health condition from breast cancer to high cholesterol is over-diagnosed, over-treated and over-marketed to a gullible public who are far too easily manipulated by television programming. |

Children now eat more fast foods, they drink more sodas, they spend more time looking at television than they spend in school, 28 hours per week. television promotes junk food, television promotes violence. Children are indoors, not exercising, playing kick the can or riding bicycles. They're not getting full spectrum light that they get from sunlight; they're sitting in shaded rooms.

Patients are educated about disease through television advertisements. (They tell you what's wrong with you! Please don't confuse this form of "education" with "marketing propaganda." The drug companies say their ads are merely educational in nature...)
2. Patients self-diagnose their own symptoms based on what they learned in the television ads.
3. Patients purchase drugs by name by asking their pharmacist for whatever they think they need. No doctor required. No medical exam necessary.
4. Patients self-medicate by taking the drugs they purchased from the pharmacy. |

The radiation emanating from television sets (not to mention the questionable programming) may also have an adverse effect on behavior. In one study, rats were placed in a cage in front of a television set. Although the sound was turned off and all visible light from the screen was shielded by a piece of black cardboard, the rats became hyperactive. This effect could be largely prevented by placing a lead shield over the black cardboard.1
Evidently, X-rays from the television set caused the rats to behave like children with ADHD. |
| Because of the results of this study, I advise parents of children with ADHD to limit their child's time in front of the television set. If children do watch television or play video games, I recommend that they sit as far away from the screen as possible. The amount of radiation exposure is inversely related to the square of the distance from the television set. For example, there is 16 times as much radiation exposure at a distance of 1 foot from the set as there is 4 feet away, and 36 times as much radiation at a distance of 1 foot as there is at 6 feet. |

Reduce TV and video game time to 2 hours daily if possible. Spend more time enjoying nature instead of watching TV.

Unbelievably, this is one of the riskiest devices as it emits an extremely high field of radiation. Throw your electric can opener away and replace it with a handheld opener. |

| Television Habits
Rethink your television viewing habits. Consider that advertisements are intended to separate you from your hard-earned money. Critically view many news and documentary items; they may actually be nothing more than well-disguised infomercials. Consider the young minds in your family. Does the word "brainwashed" frighten you?
Charity Guidelines
Strive to put "teeth" into charitable-giving guidelines. Charities, enjoying the benefits of tax exemption, should be required to direct 75% of charitable donations to the cause that provides the exemption. |
| But, amazingly, most of us seem to find time for television viewing. Recognize that television programming is brought to you not for your viewing pleasure, but to capture you as a marketing target. The celebrities who pitch products are not doing so to make your life better. They get paid to do it. They make their lives better. Take charge. Don't base your purchasing decisions on celebrity endorsements.

Sheldrake points out in one article that if you are watching television you do not assume that the tiny pictures you see on the screen are actually generated by the components of the television set. It has a tuner, which homes in on the correct frequency or channel and allows your TV set to pick up the program. If you damage the components of the set you merely interrupt its ability to receive the field or pattern of information that is carried on the electromagnetic field of the program's signal. |

Watching television for Several Hours
Scientific research has shown that watching television can dramatically increase cholesterol production in the body. Besides being a necessary component of most tissues and hormones in the body, cholesterol also serves as a stress hormone that increases during physical or mental strain. In fact, cholesterol is one of the first hormones transported to the site of an injury to help heal it. |

| They included information on television exposure, limits that were placed on TV viewing, parental involvement, socioeconomic status and ADHD symptoms.
The study found no association between television exposure and symptoms of ADHD. It also found that parental involvement—such as the amount of time the parents spent participating in children's activities that did not involve TV— was not linked to ADHD symptoms.
Stevens says it's important to note that the children in the study who showed ADHD symptoms had not been diagnosed with the disorder. |
