We then measured the amount of blood the patients' hearts pumped with each beat (that is, stroke volume). Those with severe CFS had lower stroke volume than less severely ill CFS patients or the healthy controls. If sufficient amounts of blood do not reach the heart—as would be the case with low blood volume—then stroke volume will be low. But stroke volume can also be low if something is wrong with the heart. One of the earliest symptoms of cardiac dysfunction is exertion-related fatigue.

Reducing stroke and heart attacks
Now, if you know anything about the cause of strokes and heart attacks, you realize that enhancing the quality of the blood will have a significant impact on reducing heart attacks and strokes. To my knowledge, there aren't any strong studies measuring this effect yet, but I have no doubt there will be in time. Eating aloe vera is like adding an all-natural non-stick additive to your blood flow. It stops blood cells from clumping together, which is part of what causes a stroke.

Fruit and vegetable consumption has been linked to decreased risk of stroke -- both hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. Each increment of three daily servings of fruits and vegetables equated to a 22% decrease in risk of stroke, including transient ischemic attack (Gillman et al. Journal of the American Medical Association. 1995;273;1113). |

William Morris had just one stroke. Emil Huffgard had three. As a result, both had suffered impairment of their walking. More than twenty years later, both of these men are alive and well. Neither has had any further strokes. The same plant-based nutrition that saved their hearts also saved their brains.
I have mentioned previously that several of my patients have also noted a distinct improvement in their sex lives. And recent research confirms a strong connection between impotence and cardiovascular disease. |

He'd had a severe stroke two years prior. In his mid fifties, Mexican by birth, he headed a mid-sized corporation of about 200 employees at the time of his stroke. Now, he could hardly talk. Stuttering, almost unintelligible, he began to speak haltingly of his pain, "I... It... i-is ... hard...."
The family was Catholic and devout. During the evaluation, I learned that a priest from their archdiocese, who was a gifted healer, had been working regularly with the man. The priest even had a room in their house where he would stay over, but he hadn't been able to help. |

According to virtually all the headlines printed in major media outlets, this study found vitamins E and C to be utterly worthless in preventing cardiovascular disease and stroke. And yet, in reality, the study proved that those women who actually took the vitamins were protected to such a high degree than almost no pharmaceutical on the market can match their success! It's true: A pharmaceutical that reduced stroke risk by 31 percent while introducing no negative side effects would be considered a medical miracle. |

The formation of blood clots is considered to be the main risk factor for heart attack or stroke. Since fat has no clotting ability, this risk stems mainly from the high concentration of protein in the blood. Researchers have discovered that the sulphur-containing amino acid homocysteine (HC) promotes the tiny clots that initiate arterial damage and the catastrophic ones that precipitate most heart attacks and strokes {Ann Clin & Lab Sci 1991; Lancet 1981). Be aware that HC is up to forty times more predictive than cholesterol in assessing cardiovascular disease risk. |

Could underlying heart disease cause CFS? We certainly know that if a heart is damaged either by a heart attack, infection, or having to pump against pressure, as in the case of hypertension, the heart goes through a lengthy process of dealing with the insult. Often, it doesn't completely recover. |

In addition, WHI showed that there was no benefit for stroke prevention. Instead, women who took conventional hormones had a 41% increased risk of stroke compared to women who did not take the hormones. It is even more alarming that a 2,100%) increased risk for pulmonary embolism was observed.
Breast Cancer
Perhaps the greatest downfall of conventional HRT was the finding that it caused an increased risk of breast cancer. The concern with increasing the risk for breast cancer by using conventional hormones has been around for over 25 years. |

At the age of thirty-nine, he had suffered a stroke. A few years later, he had bypass surgery—and then, in rapid succession, three more strokes. He was in dreadful shape, relying on nitroglycerin to get him through days of terribly constricted activity. "Any walking brought on the angina," says Emil. "I could shower, shave, read the paper. And I was pretty good at sitting down." Surgery was out of the question—likely to kill him, the cardiologist explained. After years of agony, the cardiologist told Emil about Dr. Esselstyn, and suggested that he have a talk with me. |

She had a stroke, and after the stroke she started to limp. My friend does Matrix Energetics work so I sent my client, who was limping, to her. Twenty minutes later, my client came out of the room and guess what? She was not limping at all. I asked my client what she [the Matrix friend] had said. She told me, "She was counting my years, I fell back on the floor, I got up, and the pain in one knee is gone and I am not limping."

A report in Science News states that feelings of hopelessness in depression "markedly raise a person's likelihood of suffering a stroke."13 It is reported that depression is equivalent to suffering from high blood pressure, in terms of risk of stroke. I have found that depression is often accompanied by deviations in blood pressure. They form an ensemble.

I probably would believe that I had a stroke and buy into that reality. Conceivably, I could remain like this for the rest of my life." Now that is a scary thought!
I do not mean to imply here that strokes are merely an experience of an altered perceptual reality, and that all you have to do is wake up from the dream into some other parallel world. Sometimes, having no ready reference point for a new experience, someone might take my statements at face value only. That is not my intent here at all. It is just an interesting possibility that I believe is worth considering. |

In the German study, fewer diabetic patients taking Lipitor had heart attacks or died from heart disease, but more of them died from stroke than those who had taken sugar pills. Dr. Robinson argued that the researchers should have looked only at the heart disease data and ignored the slightly higher death rate from stroke. The German scientists were blunt in their reply to Dr. Robinson's suggestion that they selectively report their data so that Pfizer's product, also known as atorvastatin, looked beneficial. |

Reducing salt in the diet has been shown to slightly lower the risk of stroke, high blood pressure, and heart attack.
Reducing salt intake by six grams per day results in an average lowering of the systolic blood pressure by about four mm of mercury in people with high blood pressure. This may not seem like much, but over the entire U.S. population, this slight reduction could reduce the prevalence of heart attacks by 6 percent and the risk of strokes by 15 percent. |

Four out of five diabetic patients eventually will die—not from diabetes itself, but from cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke, or peripheral vascular disease) initiated by the diabetes. Did you know that diabetes is the leading cause of amputations and one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly?2
Diabetes mellitus has reached epidemic proportions. With more than 90 percent of these cases known as type-2 diabetes (formerly known as adult-onset diabetes), we must seriously consider what is going wrong! Type-1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes. |

Sometimes, however, the sequence of events leading to blood clotting is initiated when it isn't needed; in these cases, a blood clot can form along the wall of a blood vessel and increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. Again, it is important to minimize this potential damage with anti-clotting mechanisms. Although the blood makes anti-clotting factors itself, some dietary substances can also reduce the possibility of undesired blood clotting. One of these dietary substances is green tea. |

Interestingly, the FDA just took tegaserod off the market because of an increased risk for heart attack or stroke. IBS support groups are already up in arms. Only time will tell if patient demands will somehow balance the newly discovered risks, allowing the drug to become available again, even if only limitedly.
Although the cause of IBS is not known, researchers do know that movement of food through the intestines is under the control of autonomic nerves to the gut, and serotonin is an important player in that control. |
| However, a number of large studies have found that these newer drugs have a higher rate of potentially lethal side effects, such as heart attack or stroke, than the old fashioned NSAIDs. Two of them—Vioxx and Bextra—have been taken off the market. Although Celebrex is still available, I think its risk for people taking it chronically outweighs any potential benefit over ibuprofen. Whether these toxicities extend to the older class of NSAIDs is currently not known but is a question undergoing research. |

It really wasn't until the late seventies that we began to realize the higher the cholesterol levels, the greater the risk of developing a heart attack or stroke. This was based in large part on the Framingham studies, which followed a large population of patients who lived in Framingham, Massachusetts. Scientists noted in these studies that as the cholesterol levels increased, so did the frequency of heart attacks. |
| If it is your blood vessels, you could have a heart attack or a stroke. If it is your joint space, you could develop arthritis. If it is your brain, you could develop Alzheimer's or Parkinson s disease. After the passing of time, our bodies can look just like the carpet in front of the fireplace: pretty ratty.
Together we have just imagined the "bright" side of oxygen and the life it brings (like the warmth of the fire), but we cannot deny the rest of the story. This is the part many of us have never heard about: the demise that unruly free radicals causes, otherwise known as oxidative stress. |
| Medical professionals speak out and fight to decrease the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. But why don't we talk about helping our patients decrease their risk of suffering or dying from the medications we prescribe?
While our profession essentially ignores this significant cause of death, I find it terribly ironic that physicians continue to discourage their patients from taking supplements on the premise that supplements could be dangerous to their health!
Only a handful of deaths have been reported in the last several years related to supplements. |
