For example, over 158 million Americans live in areas that exceed smog standards.1 It's estimated that 20% of the U.S. populations drinks water that violates safety standards;2 even worse, EPA safety standards only exist for about 120 pollutants in drinking water, but studies have shown that at least 260 contaminants occur in tap water.3 Some 3,000 chemicals are added to the food supply, and as many as 10,000 chemicals in the form of solvents, emulsifiers, and preservatives are used in food processing and storage. Many of these toxins can remain in the body for years. |

In lieu of setting final standards, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises people to stay out of the sun from 10 am to 4 pm. FDA now stands in direct violation a Congressional mandate requiring the agency to finalize sunscreen safety standards by May 2006, flouting not only Congress but also consumers, who are reliant on sunscreen to protect their health.
84% of sunscreen products harm consumers
As the EWG's research reveals, an incredible 84% of sunscreen products are harmful to consumers. |

The Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act calls on the USDA to update what CSPI says are "disco-era nutrition standards" for school foods (e.g., vending machines, school stores, and a la carte in the cafeteria).
The Act would take the USDA's current standards of limiting the sale of foods of minimal value, currently applicable only to cafeterias during meal times, and extend it to apply throughout the school day and everywhere on school grounds. |

In response to FDA's failure to set enforceable standards for sunscreen, citizens have filed nine class-action, false-advertising lawsuits in California; the Connecticut state Attorney General has petitioned the Agency to set standards; and six Senators have written FDA, urging the Agency to issue sunscreen regulations to protect the public from skin cancer.

Department of Agriculture put into place a set of national standards that must be met in order for a food to be labeled "organic." Those standards apply whether the food was grown in the United States or imported from other countries. It's a huge step in the right direction. Organic food is now defined as follows:
Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. |

Wal-Mart wants to sell you stuff that is cheaper than their competitors, and the only way they can do that is to outsource it from overseas - places like China and Brazil - where worker rights and environmental standards are routinely violated, or else lower standards in the United States and allow industrial-style production to call itself organic.
Mike: Now, this is obviously a very important story for consumers to follow. How can they continue to get updates from you on this story?

The dose was, in fact, about double what a worker in a dry cleaners or tannery might be "safely" exposed to under standards set by both EPA and Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards. For four weeks Gilbert and Pumford monitored the mice. "We had no idea what kind of immune-system alteration we might see," says Gilbert. So they did a whole battery of tests to look at what was happening with some of the cells in the mice that would tell them if there was, indeed, an autoimmune reaction. |

Pharmacopoeia (USP) standards.
These are government guidelines that assure you and me that medications and supplement tablets will be absorbed by our bodies. Pharmaceutical GMPs are worthless if the company does not also follow USP standards for the dissolution of its tablets. Choosing a company that follows the USP guidelines is certainly a step in the right direction.
Sometimes it is quite difficult to find out information about the quality control that various companies use in their manufacturing process. |

And yet the government standards for limitations of pesticides are set by adult standards, which do not take into account the heightened susceptibility of children.
"In order to assess the damage caused by pesticides and other toxic chemicals to the nervous and immune systems in children, every educated person should read a government publication entitled Neurotoxicity: Identifying and Controlling Poisons of the Nervous System. It points out that behavioral problems are one of the earliest signs of chemical toxicity, which is what we are seeing in children today. |

United States Pharmacopoeia
The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) is a publication that serves as the official authority and is used to set public standards and regulations for all prescription and over-the-counter medicines and other health care products manufactured and sold in the United States. Monographs for some dietary supplements and ingredients appear in a separate section of the USP.
The FDA recognizes the USP and National Formulary (NF) as official standards, and they are now published as a single volume (USP-NF). |

To properly identify herbs and correct dosages, various pharmacopoeias have been written and updated over the years. A pharmacopoeia is an official collection of technical information on specific medicinal drugs (both botanical and pharmaceutical).

A company marketing internationally usually has to follow higher standards than those companies who market only in the U.S. Canada, Australia, and Western European countries have the highest standards for the manufacturing of nutritional supplements. Some of these countries will also periodically send officials to perform on-site inspections of these manufacturing plants. It is really nice if the company is able to show you a third-party certification documenting the quality of its manufacturing practices.
Does all of this sound too picky? |

When each patient was admitted to the hospital, personnel graded the patient's health status according to the standards adopted by the Second National Conference on Cerebrovascular Disease. According to those standards, the effects of stroke were slight in twenty-eight of the patients, medium in nine patients, and severe in three. The same grading scale was used to reevaluate the patients' health after four weeks of daily doses of polyphenols extracted from green tea. Following this therapeutic regimen, surprising improvements were observed in the patients. |

For every category, from lipsticks, blushes, mascaras, and eyeshadows to concealers, foundations, cleansers, toners, scrubs, moisturizers, facial masks, AHA products, wrinkle creams, and brushes, I've created specific standards that the products must meet to garner a happy, unhappy, or neutral (meaning unimpressive but not bad) face.
Makeup products are assessed primarily on texture and application using professional tools (brushes). Was it silky-smooth or grainy and hard? |
| Department of Agriculture (USDA), national regulations have been on the books that specify exact standards for determining what precisely is meant when food is labeled "organic," whether it is grown in the United States or imported from other countries. As is stated on the USDA Web site, "Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. |
| FOUNDATIONS WITH SUNSCREENS: Foundations with sunscreens are held to the same standards as all other sunscreens, which means they must have at least an SPF 15 and must list a UVA-protecting ingredient as one of the active ingredients on the label. The only acceptable UVA-protecting ingredients are titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone (also called Parsol 1789 or its technical name butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane), Tinosorb (technical name bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine), and Mexoryl SX (technical name terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid; also known as ecamsule). |
| It is important to read the individual product assessments and criteria so you understand exactly what standards were used to evaluate each particular category.
Skin-care products were evaluated almost entirely by analyzing the ingredient list and comparing the ingredients listed to the claims made about the product. If a toner asserts that it is designed for sensitive skin, it should not contain ingredients that irritate skin. If a moisturizer claims it can hydrate the skin, it should contain ingredients that can do just that. |

Price found groups that ate diets of wild animal flesh to be generally healthier than the agriculturists who relied on cereals and other plant foods; the agriculturists tended to have somewhat higher levels of tooth decay (though still low by our standards). Price noted that many of the peoples he visited particularly prized organ meats, in which he found high levels of fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, and "activator X," a term of his own invention that is probably vitamin K2. |

Weaknesses: Overreliance on jar packaging and redundant moisturizer formulas; many products (even those with few ingredients) containing more than eight preservatives, which increases the potential for irritation; no sunscreens recommended as part of a daily routine; no products to treat blemishes; and, as usual for the cosmetics industry, pricey products that don't have research to support their claims or make them worth the investment; "spa-quality" is a bogus claim because there are no established standards for this market.

By the standards of most official dietary guidelines, the French eat poorly: way too much saturated fat and wine. The Greeks too have their own paradox; defying the recommendation that we get no more than 30 percent of our calories from fats, they get 40 percent, most of it in the form of olive oil. So researchers begin looking for synergies between nutrients: Might the antioxidants in the red wine help metabolize the fats? Perhaps. |
