The book begins with a discussion of the concept of "peak oil" -- a term that indicates we've nearly reached the peak production of fossil fuels for energy. After the peak oil point is reached, oil production will decline and the price of oil will naturally rise.
Kunstler points out that not only has oil likely reached a peak in terms of global production that may have occurred in the last two or three years, but at the same time the demand for oil is sharply rising around the world, especially as nations like China demonstrate an increasing appetite for energy consumption. |

When patients report that they have to use eyedrops frequently and always need to have a drink nearby because of dry mouth, I send them to a cornea specialist who can measure tear production in the eyes (called a Schirmer's test). While dry eyes are a symptom, low tear production is a sign that allows the ophthalmologist to confirm and actually quantify the symptom. If tear production is low, I send patients for a lip biopsy. And if the biopsy is positive, I ask them to see a rheumatologist. The rheumatologist and I can then work together to help the patient feel better. |

Corn prices are already skyrocketing because of the ramp up in ethanol production from corn.
The only people promoting ethanol production from corn are corn farmers, politicians or complete idiots. Some people are all three.
But let's face it: Consumers like to buy products that they think are "green" in some way, even if the green-ness of those products is highly exaggerated or even entirely fictitious. Why? Because it removes their guilt for driving SUVs, eating meat products and spraying pesticides on their lawns. |

One study shown here demonstrates that acemannan increases cells' production of nitric oxide (NO), an anti-cancer chemical strongly associated with the shrinking of cancer tumors. Essentially, the more nitric oxide you produce (to a point), the less cancer you have, and acemannan increases the production of nitric oxide. Although this particular research was focused on chickens, the same effect has also been observed in humans.

They hope to eventually produce 20,000 electric vehicles a year, but for now will have to settle with the 500 currently slated for the first production run. The Ontario, California vehicle manufacturer hopes to expand production to more than 6,000 in 2008.
According to Byron Bliss, Vice-President of Sales, Phoenix Motorcars plans to sell fleets of vehicles to school districts and businesses, government agencies and companies with large groups of outside representatives. |

To understand how plant-based nutrition facilitates nitric oxide production, you need to have a sense of the biochemistry at play. The essential building block for nitric oxide production is a substance called L-arginine, an amino acid that is in rich supply in a variety of plant foods, especially legumes, beans, soy, and nuts. Figure 6 shows, schematically, how L-arginine fits neatly into the enzymatic action of nitric oxide synthase, which then produces nitric oxide from the arginine and oxygen. |

We also know that soy can increase the production and thus the levels of glucagon in the body. Glucagon is a hormone that works to counteract the response of insulin in the body, and these increased glucagon levels may also contribute to soy's ability to help control weight as well as regulate blood sugar. Glucagon also helps slow the production of enzymes that are involved in making more fat cells.44 We know from animal studies that soy protein can reduce body fat accumulation and improve insulin sensitivity. |

NAD marshals electrons into the pathway needed to maximize energy production and metabolism; low levels of NAD adversely affect the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Every cell uses oxygen and glucose to convert ADP (adenine diphosphate) and phosphoric acid into ATP, a molecule that slow-drips energy to power most cellular processes. ADP and ATP are the equivalent of chemical energy storage tanks. Each molecule hoards a tiny supply of energy deep within its phosphorus-oxygen bond. |

The initial production run of the Tesla Roaster sold out in four months, and current reservations for the 2008 model year are on a first-come, first-served basis. Demand right now is high, considering that the company is doing such a small initial production run of the model, with an anticipated delivery date in Fall 2007.
Producing only one-tenth of the pollution of a normal gasoline-powered car, the new Tesla Roadster is six times as energy efficient as the best sports car and produces zero tailpipe emissions. |

When we have too much ADMA, then L-arginine is edged out for a position in nitric oxide synthase, and the production of nitric oxide fails. There is another delicate enzyme with a formidable name—dimethyl arginine dimethyl amino hydrolase, or DDAH—that destroys ADMA, in order to favor production of nitric oxide. But the usual cardiovascular risk factors (high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high homocysteine, insulin resistance, hypertension, and tobacco use) all impair the ability of that delicate enzyme to destroy ADMA. |

In the case of the Amazon rainforest, it means there's less land available to support natural rain forest habitat, which is, of course, important for the oxygen production of the entire planet. So, in a very understandable way, the mass consumption of red meat around this planet actually affects the climate of the planet. Global climate change is one side effects of massive meat consumption.
If we were to switch over to a system of generating artificial meat, then the climate effect of this meat production would be drastically reduced. |

| Within Space—Life
The first effect of the cosmogonic emanations is the framing of the world stage of space; the second is the production of life within the frame: life polarized for self-reproduction under the dual form of the male and female. It is possible to represent the entire process in sexual terms, as a pregnancy and birth. This idea is superbly rendered in another metaphysical genealogy of the Maoris:
From the conception the increase, From the increase the thought, From the thought the remembrance, From the remembrance the consciousness, From the consciousness the desire. |

Vitamins B6 and B5 stimulate the immune system,- a vitamin B6 deficiency is associated with depletion of white blood cells in the thymus, spleen and lymph nodes and lowered antibody production. Combinations of various vitamins with omega 3 and omega 6 oils regulate inflammatory reactions in the body.
Vitamins A and D also improve the digestive system, stimulate bowel function and help rid the body of any build-up of toxic matter. These vitamins are easily absorbed in the form of cod liver oil. |

Glitazones reduce sugar production by the liver and increase the sensitivity of cells to insulin. Side effects include infections, headaches, anemia, fluid retention, weight gain, and, more rarely, liver failure or cardiac events.
The first of these medications was troglitazone (Rezulin). Troglitazone was found to be effective in the prevention of type 2 diabetes in at-risk patients but was associated with high rates of liver toxicity. |

Histamine causes the production of more mucus, and sets off local inflammation of the area.
Remembering the example of the sprained ankle, you know that an inflamed part of the body remains swollen for some time. This is because the white blood cells don't just disperse as quickly as they arrived. They stay in the area and only gradually, over some days, does the swelling subside. This is true of allergic asthma. After an attack the air passages remain inflamed for some days, and recovery is slow. |
| This narrowing can be due to muscle contraction, local inflammation or the production of excess mucus. The result is the same: difficulty in breathing. Wheezing is often heard as the asthmatic person breathes out. The recommendations in this book are aimed at sufferers of bronchial asthma of all kinds.
Another, uncommon, type of asthma is called cardiac asthma. It is a symptom of heart disease, where the heart is not pumping the blood around the body strongly enough to deliver sufficient oxygen to the muscles. |

Pulsatilla: If there is an established history of mucus production and congestion that affects the ears, nose, and/or chest, this remedy is well indicated. The mucus produced is characteristically thick and yellowish-green in color. The affected ears feel constantly stuffed up, with the sensation being mildly relieved only when traveling in a car. The external ear may also become swollen and inflamed, with a sense of pressure as though something were pushing itself out of the ear.
HERBALISM

| Studies show that chamomile may slow allergic reactions, such as those that trigger asthma attacks, by increasing the production of cortisone in the adrenal glands, which reduces lung inflammation and makes breathing easier. Make a tea using some or all of these herbs to help with asthma.

| Anemia can be divided into two types: that triggered by the decreased production of red blood cells and that caused by an increased loss of red blood cells. Red blood cells are manufactured in the bone marrow and have a life expectancy of approximately four months. To produce red blood cells, the body needs, among other things, iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid (one of the B group of vitamins). If one or more of these ingredients is lacking, anemia will develop. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia, particularly among women. |

Other nutrients and trace elements are important: Vitamin E enhances the immune system, while a lack of Vitamin B6 can lower the white blood cells and reduce antibody production.
But are we feeding our immune systems properly? Sadly, the answer seems to be 'No'. A survey into eating habits found that people were eating a wider variety of foods than they did ten years ago, but the nutritional content had not improved. The consequence of poor nutrition in the developed world is a diet-related sickness bill of billions of dollars annually. |

Because of the unique way they act in the body (acting on the angiotensin system rather than increasing urine production), they have been promoted as being superior to the older drugs and as having fewer side effects, and for many years doctors and patients have accepted these claims at face value. However, as I point out in this chapter, later research has not always borne out these claims.
By the 1990s, the three newer classes of drugs had taken over the antihypertensive market. |

Chronic bronchitis may be treated medically using some of the same drugs that are prescribed for asthma, as the aim in both cases is to reduce the production of mucus and increase the flow of air through the bronchi.
CROUP
Croup is most often caused by a virus but can also be the result of certain bacterial infections or a severe allergy. During a croup attack the air passage at the entrance to the larynx narrows. Breathing becomes difficult and is accompanied by a harsh cough. |

It turns out that COX-2 inhibitors block the production of prostacyclin (a member of the family of lipid molecules known as eicosanoids) without affecting synthesis of another compound called thromboxane A-2. This in turn leads to a depression of prostaglandin 1-2, a compound that increases blood pressure as well as the ability of blood to clot, which leads to more heart attacks and strokes.

Phytoplankton are responsible for the production of a major portion of the earth's oxygen as well as the regulation of our atmosphere. Through photosynthesis, phytoplankton utilize chlorophyll and light to release oxygen into water and, in the process, convert huge quantities of carbon dioxide into living matter.5 They also have the ability to convert sunlight, water, and minerals into amino acids, fatty acids, carbohydrates, and vitamins.
Until recently, phytoplankton were thought to be food for water creatures only. |

The loud and largely consistent authority claims, and distinctive styles of knowledge production and practice displayed by contemporary orthodox medicine also renders its differences with other therapeutic systems and practices highly visible. Because biomedicine positions itself as possessing absolute knowledge—knowledge that is true for and of all bodies, everywhere, independent of culture—its proponents tend to resist claims to parity made by other medical systems. |
