One of the most comprehensive sources of EDT information is "Muscle Logic : Escalating Density Training" by Charles Staley, available in bookstores and at Amazon.com. It gives you a solid introduction to escalating density training, simple rules for following EDT, and then provides photos depicting exactly what to do.
To explain where this comes from and how it works, I first have to give you a brief history of Power Factor Training. Peter Sisco and John Little, who wrote the book of the same title, developed power factor training. |
| You'll be both strong and functional, and your leg muscle mass will increase in size because that is a necessary adaptation for increased strength.
The EDT program seems so simple that you might wonder why nobody thought of it before now. Part of the answer is that people who engage in strength training and bodybuilding tend to over-complicate things. They like to have all sorts of cascading systems, numbers of reps and sets, days on and days off, ladders and all kinds of numerical contortions that may not actually lend themselves to the most efficient strength enhancement system. |
| The difficulty with the power factor training system is that it uses a very small range of motion, eventually becoming static contraction training, which has no motion whatsoever. muscle contraction without movement makes it very difficult to understand the concept of work, since nothing is actually moving. In my own experience, I maxed-out and plateaued quickly, unable to see continued gains even though I was pushing a tremendous amount of weight very short distances. |

The heart valve isn't misshapen due to a congenital defect; it is misshapen because the heart is a giant muscle that's sagging out of shape due to a lack of nutritional support.
When you don't have B vitamins and the proper amount of magnesium, zinc and calcium in your body, guess what happens to all the muscles in your body? They all start to sag. The muscles lose their proper shape. This includes the muscles in your heart, biceps, hamstrings, and chest. When the heart valve is misshapen, even in a minor way, things can start to go wrong in your circulatory system. |

The heart is a muscle, and all muscle contractions depend on calcium," he said. "Inadequate calcium means weak muscles—including the heart. Old people often have too little calcium in their bodies. So having extra-hard water may help keep Nicoyans' hearts strong for longer."
Also, calcium is important for bones, he continued, looking at me over his glasses. I could tell he was making a good-natured effort to simplify the explanation. "Our bones are constantly losing mass and building it back up. When we are young, our bones build faster than they deteriorate. |

Another example of normal, aerobic cells of the body turning to anaerobic functioning under adverse conditions is seen with muscle cells. When we exercise so strenuously that the supply of oxygen to our muscles is not sufficient for normal functioning, then our muscle cells switch to anaerobic functioning. This involves utilizing glucose for energy, instead of oxygen, and it results in the production of lactic acid —just as in cancer cells. It is largely this production of lactic acid in the muscles that causes muscle soreness after strenuous exercise. |

Each block is actually a contraction, a tightening, a locking of some muscle or group of muscles. Some group of skeletal muscles, that is, and every skeletal muscle is under voluntary control. The same voluntary muscles you use to move an arm, to chew, to walk, to jump, to make a fist, or to kick—just these same muscles are operating in every body block.
But that means that these blocks are not—indeed, they physically cannot be—involuntary. They do not happen to us. They are and must be something we are actively doing to ourselves. |

Electrical energy is measured with sensitive instruments then 'feedback' to the feedback device so the person can see when his frontalis is relaxed or tense. When you shiver, the increased muscle activity burns the sugar stored in your muscles and creates heat. What happens next is less obvious, but you've felt the effect. Remember the uncomfortable combination of tingling and numbness in your fingers and toes? That's your body's next move.
As soon as the body senses cold, it constricts the thin web of capillaries in your extremities, first your fingers and toes, then farther up your arms and legs. |

And by breaking down muscle mass, your metabolism will be slowed even further. This will accelerate your weight gain efforts and allow you to pack on the pounds almost automatically.
Remember that when you don't use your muscles, your body gets rid of them. That's because your body adapts to the level and intensity of physical exercise you choose to pursue. The quickest way to get rid of the muscles that you don't want is to simply stop using them, and your body will take care of the rest. |
| Avoiding physical exercise has a second effect -- it also causes your body to break down the existing muscle mass that you have today. So to pick up a set of dumbbells two or three days a week and do a few exercises helps maintain that bone density, as well as keep the muscle mass on.
I wrote a book a few years ago called "Lift Weights to Lose Weight," and in the book I said if I had to stop doing one thing in life -- whether I had to give up my yoga or had to give up my cardio -- as you start to age, the one thing that you want to maintain is a little strength training because again, it keeps on muscle mass and as we age, if we start to lose that muscle mass, our metabolism starts slowing down. |

And we now recognize that vitamin D is very important for muscle function, and that people who are vitamin D deficient are prone to have muscle weakness, they're more likely to fall and they're more likely to have bone fractures. We also know that if you're vitamin D deficient, not only does it precipitate and exacerbate osteoporosis in older men and women, but it causes a very subtle and quite devastating bone disease known as osteomalatia. Long story short, osteomalatia is like adult rickets. And what it does is it causes severe bone discomfort, achiness in the bones and also in the muscles. |

I'll assume you already know how important protein is to the body in general, but a quick review: Protein provides the building blocks for hormones and neurotransmitters and antibodies, not to mention being necessary for strong muscles and bones. It is essential for metabolism. Without protein, you would die. (The same is not true of dietary carbohydrate, but that's a whole different story. |

Scientists call the brown fat process nonshivering thermogen-esis, because it's heat creation without muscle movement. Shivering, of course, is only good for a few hours; once you exhaust the blood sugar stores in your muscles and fatigue sets in, it doesn't work anymore. Brown fat, on the other hand, can go on generating heat for as long as it's fed, and unlike most other tissues, it doesn't need insulin to bring sugar into cells.
Nobody's written the Brown Fat Diet Book yet because it requires more than your usual lifestyle change. |

Pumpkin would be a great food just on the basis of its high amount of potassium. But there's much more. One cup of mashed pumpkin contains more than 5,000 meg of beta-carotene, another 853 of alpha-carotene, and more than 3,500 meg of beta-cryptoxanthin, a member of the carotenoid family that seems to reduce the risk of lung and colon cancer. |

As the muscle cells disintegrate, their contents flow into the bloodstream. Mild cases can cause severe pain and muscle weakness. In serious cases, the condition can cause paralysis and death as the kidneys shut down. All statins had been found to cause rhabdomyolysis in rare cases. But some Bayer executives began to worry that the risk for patients taking Baycol was higher than for those taking the other drugs.
The company's drug safety office was soon deluged with injury reports. |

And it seems like it's directed at a large number of health effects, but if you look at the underlying cause of these health problems, it's all free radicals, and so it's really the antioxidant capability of Bioastin to get in and quench free radicals. With rheumatoid arthritis it's an immune rejection of joints, and the first immune response of the body is to generate free radicals to try and kill something bad from the body. |

The symptoms varied by patient and included swelling, coughs, rashes, physical weakness, pneumonia, breathing difficulties, hardening of the skin, mouth ulcers, nausea, shortness of breath, muscle spasms, visual problems, hair loss, difficulty with concentration or memory, and paralysis. The one symptom shared by all was intense debilitating muscle pain (myalgia). The patients' levels of white blood cells, called eosinophils, also skyrocketed, suggesting a severely disrupted immune system. |

Robert Butler recommends exercising the core muscle groups at least twice a week. Balance is also important since falls are a common cause of injuries and death among seniors (in the U.S.A., about one in three adults over age 65 falls each year). Just practicing standing on one foot during the day (maybe when brushing your teeth) would be a small step toward improving your balance.
Yoga, when done properly, will help increase balance. It also strengthens all muscle groups, increases flexibility, is good for your joints, and can lessen lower back pain. |

We didn't talk much about the muscle pain, but people get muscle pain because the nerves firing the other way cause them to spasm, and they just stay tight all the time. They get scar tissue and build up a lot of toxins in there. Anyway, the guaifenesin usually makes them sick for about two months, and then they start feeling better. It seems to be helping the muscle pain. Another thing that's being done, I've had two patients come in, and they were put on chemotherapy for [fibromyalgia] for a year and a half.
Mike: You're kidding me!
Dr. Whitcomb: No.
Mike: Chemotherapy?!
