Intensity Evaluation in Ocular Exercises
How can we calculate load intensity in ocular isometric exercises—fixing the borders of the visual field—if we cannot vary and/or measure it "by sight"? We do this in ordinary strength exercises when we change the weight on a barbell. We can compare it to the forms of isometric strength increases by any striated bodily muscle.
That is the relationship between contraction duration and the range of movement—but in the case of the eyes, the range of the lever can't be taken into account because the length of the limbs does not exist. |
| This is the result of a chronic isometric contraction of the extrinsic ocular muscles as a part of the general ocular tension caused by attention and problem solving. The problems that are ascribed to using or abusing mental and cognitive processes are the real reason the eye adapts its focal state to a "near" environment by "going negative."
In brief, a myopic person is a person who is too stressed and too concentrated on his mental processes to relax and clear his distance vision by that process. |
| We can compare it to the forms of isometric strength increases by any striated bodily muscle.
That is the relationship between contraction duration and the range of movement—but in the case of the eyes, the range of the lever can't be taken into account because the length of the limbs does not exist. The person who has organic visual problems—cataracts, glaucoma, and/or retinal detachment—should not do these exercises.
Optimal Intensity
To achieve intense contraction—efficient stimulus—focusing is maintained at an extreme level as long as possible, until you feel a slight muscular tiredness. |
| When increasing the strength of the eye's extrinsic muscles, the contractions are of the isometric type, where the resistance is steady and exists even without movement of the visible load. Obviously it is impossible to get a barbell or physical load onto the ocular muscle. In such cases, the resistance is given by the antagonistic muscle, which opposes the movement.
For example, let us review one of your muscular work movements—the one of fixing at a point at the extreme left part of the visual field on a horizontal level. |

Data on active and passive wrist flexion and extension, forearm girth, limb volume, visual analog pain scale, muscle soreness index, isometric strength, concentric and eccentric wrist total work, concentric and eccentric wrist average peak torque, and concentric and eccentric angle of peak torque were collected in the beginning and at the end of the exercise and 20 minutes, 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment. No significant differences were found between the therapy regimens and the control group (Gulick et al, 1996). |
| Associated with the rise in blood pressure were enhanced pressor and heart rate responses to the cold pressor, isometric handgrip, and Valsalva maneuvers (Goldberg et al, 1983). Yohimbine given in moderate doses increases systolic blood pressure in patients with orthostatic hypotension due to primary autonomic failure (Jordan, 1998). Yohimbine-in-duced enhancement of sympathetic tone in patients with neurally mediated syncope improves orthostatic tolerance (Mosqueda-Garcia, 1998). |

The findings from this study show that although it had a slower onset of action, SAMe was as effective as celecoxib in managing symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. The clinical application of SAMe centers on the treatment of depression, pain disorders, and liver toxicity. precautions and adverse reactions
For patients with bipolar disorder, only under strict medical supervision should SAMe be considered (Kagan et al, 1990). |

In the case of isometric contractions (when the muscle is contracting against a steady resistance), and in our case, it is impossible to give you precise suggestions on the factor of contraction intensity.
How can we avoid this merely theoretical factor? How can we be sure that our eyes are always subjected to the load that is suitable to create muscular adaptation? The answer is in perceiving the level of muscular work you are carrying out. |

A final safety note:
Don't confuse isotonic exercise (weight lifting and stretching) with isometric exercise. This latter type of exercise involves pushing against an immovable object, like a wall. During an isometric contraction, the critical flow of blood to the muscles stops, reducing the effectiveness of that exercise. In addition, people commonly hold their breath during an isometric maneuver. This can cause a rise in blood pressure that's not healthy. It's particularly dangerous for people with heart conditions—and many older people are suffering from heart disease but don't know it. |

The Masters of Physical Fitness
We live in an era dominated by weightlifting for strength, but I believe that the true masters of physical fitness over the past one hundred years used a far more effective form of exercise: Isoflexion™ and isometric resistance exercises. Unlike weightlifters who pack on massive muscle bulk, these masters of physical fitness are sculpted like Greek statues and routinely perform amazing acts of strength and flexibility that men twice their size cannot achieve. And yet these individuals train without using weights! |
| Points to Remember: m By maintaining an aerobic isometric conttaction of the upper body muscles (approximately 50 percent of maximum perceived effort), you will discover that it is much easier to contract the thigh (muscles (quadriceps) very powerfully.
¦ Breathe deeply, exhaling while going down and inhaling while coming up.
¦ No need to go deeper than halfway unless you want to. But be careful not to harm the knee joint. |

Thujone exists in two isometric forms—a and p ketone, with most of the toxicity residing in a thujone. Sage oil is the least toxic of this group despite containing 50% thujone, being a mixture of the two isomers. Care is still necessary in its use (Tisserand 1988). Pulegone, a related ketone found in oil of pennyroyal, Mentha pulegium
(Lamiaceae), has similar properties, and the same precautions for its use apply as for thujone-containing oils. |

Include stretching and some isometric exercises with these as warm-ups and on off days perform a minimum of 20 minutes of isometrics and stretching at home. Take one or two rest days each week when you do not exercise. Research has shown that recuperation between exercising is as important to the immune system as the exercise.
The Anti-Stress Benefits of Rest: Rest counters the effects of stress and improves immunity. Herbert Benson, M.D., of the Mind/Body Medical Institute in Boston, and the author of The Relaxation Response (1975), has studied the effects of rest on the body since the 1970s. |

The more important ones are stretching, hanging from the hands or feet, using a rebounder, circling the pelvis, head-and-shoulder stand, isometric exercises, scalp and face exercises (pulling faces, tensing and relaxing scalp muscles), shaking to loosen the body, and slow graceful and rhythmic movements with (or without) music. Hatha yoga exercises are excellent for stretching and massaging the internal organs.
During the day, frequently stretch, tense, circle, or shake your muscles. Select a time of the day or week for a more thorough workout. |

| In some cases you might also be able to combine isometric exercise with isotonic (more on this in a moment). This would give you the benefits of both types of exercise. For example, if you were working on a rebounder, a device that does little for developing upper body strength, you might add isometric exercises involving your arm, chest, and back muscles to get a more rounded workout. You would build upper body muscles while keeping your heart rate fast enough to burn fat and increase endurance.
Isotonic exercise is done by flexing a muscle with constant weight working against it. |

In aerobic exercise we move our bodies freely, as opposed to isometric exercise, in which we push against resistance.
Isometric exercises, such as weight lifting and resistance exercises (including water skiing), do not improve the conditioning of the heart. Rather, these types of exercise may increase strength and perhaps add extra muscle or provide additional bulk to the body. It is aerobic exercise that causes us to breathe deeply, expanding the chest and thereby providing more oxygen to the heart and the rest of the body. |

Avoid high-intensity or isometric exercise that involves a sustained increase in systolic blood pressure (such as heavy weight lifting) if you have diabetes complications involving blood-vessel disease of the eye or kidney.
* Check with your doctor about timing your exercise with meals and medications if you take drugs to control your diabetes. (For example, if you are susceptible to hypoglycemia, a small carbohydrate snack before moderate activity is often sufficient to prevent a risky drop in blood glucose.)

Studies examining the effects of creatine on oxidative energy systems, muscle isokinetic torque and isometric force produced similarly mixed results. Among the few field tests that have been conducted (all related to swim sprints) none detected any effect on athletic performance. Only among studies of cycle ergometer performance was there any superiority of creatine over placebo (11 trials reported improvement, while six others reported no improvement). |

| But stay away from weight-lifting or isometric exercises. In general, a healthy lifestyle and low-fat diet improves blood pressure and function of the heart without drugs. Avoid smoking and second hand smoke. Reduce your stress level. Take a long vacation or quit your high-pressure job. Meditate or take up yoga. Play golf, go jogging daily. Also, garlic, fish oil and aspirin can help prevent second heart attack while lowing blood pressure. An exercise program approved by a doctor will go a long way toward eliminating the need to resort to a drug like this.

Furthermore, impaired cardiac function is not typical of mitral valve prolapse in adults, and the symptoms associated with this condition do not appear to be caused by diminished cardiac function. While the symptoms associated with mitral valve prolapse may respond to magnesium supplementation,61 the role of CoQ10 in the treatment of this disorder is unclear. |
