It is recommended for the elderly, debilitated, immune compromised (people rk who have illnesses that affect their immune systems), asthmatics, and (p chemotherapy patients. Good hand washing is probably the best preventive measure against spreading flu germs.
Herbs: Some herbs with natural viral suppression properties can be taken during the flu season. One that has had some success is larch (found in a Thorne product called Larix®). Elderberry extract can be used in the same way. These herbs can also be used at the onset of flu symptoms. |
| Certain skin illnesses, allergies, and dermatitis cause dry, flaking skin. If you think any of these conditions are the cause of the dry skin, or if you have serious symptoms in addition to dry skin, see your doctor.

Herbs:
• Insufficient yin energy can result in dry skin. Mai Men Dong (ophiopogon tuber) and Gou Ji Zi (wolfberry) can tonify body yin energy, creating nutrients to nourish the skin. To make a decoction, combine 30 g of each berry, both available from Chinese pharmacies or online, in a teapot. Let them steep in boiling water for 20 minutes. |
| Medical doctors undergo extensive training at university and within the hospital system to enable them to diagnose illnesses accurately.
A patient-doctor relationship involves first gathering data, by taking a case history, performing a physical examination, and carrying out any necessary tests, including X-ray, blood, or urine tests. This data is then analyzed and assessed to develop a treatment plan. A doctor follows the patient's progress and alters the plan as necessary. The type of treatment offered often includes pharmaceutical drugs, which require a prescription. |
| They can also be symptomatic of other illnesses such as anemia, psoriasis, and fungal infection, and more serious conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Nutritional deficiencies can cause the condition of your nails to deteriorate, and nails can also be affected by stress. Unsightly nail problems rarely have far-reaching concerns, but nevertheless if you feel that your nails do not look healthy it can indicate a larger problem that requires prompt attention. |
| Bacteria then start to work on any particles of food or other debris present in the mouth, creating an unpleasant smell (morning breath). Many illnesses can also lead to bad breath. Infections in the mouth or throat, including nasal congestion, sinusitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, and swollen adenoids, can all be contributing factors to bad breath. Indigestion caused by acid reflux can also play a role. Other causes of bad breath include smoking, drinking alcohol, or eating certain foods such as onions, garlic, and spicy dishes such as curries. |
| Treating catarrh first involves diagnosing the cause and ruling out any problematic illnesses. It is necessary to assess whether the catarrh is triggered by a viral infection or is an allergic reaction.
Decongestants: Over-the-counter decongestants, such as pseudephedrine, and nasal sprays, such as oxymetazoline (afrin), are effective for immediate, short-term alleviation. They can be used to relieve discomfort while searching for the cause of the discharge, but tend to cause rebound congestion if used for longer than three days. |

In fact, most viral illnesses are little more than an inconvenience that can be treated effectively with bed rest and time. Treatment with an antibiotic has no effect in terms of alleviating the symptoms of these illnesses, yet half of all antibiotics are prescribed for viral illnesses or other disorders on which they have no effect.

Research also reveals that taking vitamin C can lower the severity of disease and reduce the risk of developing many illnesses in the first place. |
| The germ theory served as a crude but elegant formulation that explained dozens of seemingly unrelated illnesses affecting literally every organ system.
Today we are witnessing another medical anomaly—a unique pattern of illness involving chemically exposed people who subsequently report multisystem symptoms and new-onset chemical and food intolerances. These intolerances may be the hallmark for a new disease process, just as fever is a hallmark for infection. |
| Despite these uncertainties, the evidence that our long-term exposure to chemicals could be behind chronic illnesses is strong.
Not only is long-term exposure of toxic chemicals known to, and indeed intentionally used to, damage tissues, but their mere presence has been found to increase the amount of tissue-damaging free radicals in the body. In addition to this, the vast majority of chemicals also appear to be able to interfere with every single one of our major natural hormone systems. This hormonal damage stresses body systems, further increasing the chance of disease development. |
| Not only will it tell you which chemicals are known to trigger or exacerbate certain diseases, it will also tell you how to deal with these diseases once you have developed them, as well as ways in which to protect yourself from these chronic illnesses in the first place.
Whatever your particular reason for being interested in your health, there are some truly amazing health benefits waiting to be discovered when you reduce your chemical toxicity. |
| One study conducted by researchers from the Norwegian Institute of Gene Ecology found that villagers living near a GM maize field in the Philippines have suffered a range of illnesses. Professor Terje Traavik, scientific director at Gen-0k-Norwegian Institute of Gene Ecology, revealed details of a study showing that the villagers suffered fevers, breathing problems, and intestinal and skin ailments. He said blood tests indicated that the symptoms resulted from inhaling mutated maize pollen that had been carried in on the wind. |
| Symptoms can range from mild flu-like illnesses to convulsions, unconsciousness, and death. Since these symptoms usually follow quickly after the poisoning incident, they are relatively well documented and on the whole hard to ignore. And, on a wider scale, these high-dose poisoning episodes account for a staggering 3 million cases of severe pesticide poisoning alone, including 220,000 fatalities worldwide every year. However, it is the more subtle form of long-term "low level" chemical poisoning that we will be concerned with in this book. |

No doubt these are frustrating illnesses for both the physician and the patient. Unfortunately, traditional medicine offers only symptomatic medications: nonsteroidal antiinflammatories, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, and sleeping medication. Physicians also refer the patient to a support group and tell them they just need to learn to live with it.
Let's look at these illnesses in more detail and see what better treatments are available.

Could it result in fewer AIDS-defining illnesses, improved T-cell levels, less medical intervention, improved psychological well-being:1
Elisabeth's caution finally paid off. After six months, the treated group were healthier on every parameter - significantly fewer doctor visits, fewer hospitalizations, fewer days in hospital, fewer new AIDS-defining illnesses and significantly lower severity of disease. |

As a key point of discussion, this only applies to preventable self-inflicted diseases, not to true illnesses that are the result of genetics, predispositions, illnesses or disabilities children are born with or show themselves over time. I am also not talking about diseases caused by viruses or bacteria, which may knock us down for prolonged periods, even though they too may sometimes be best treated by means more holistic and natural than synthetic drugs. |

Magical Uses
Mal aire (bad air), mal viento (bad wind), susto and espanto (fright), mal ojo (evil eye), and brujeria (sorcery) are seen as very common illnesses in Andean society. Causes are sudden changes in body temperature (aire, viento), any kind of shock (susto), negative "humors" (ojo) and spells cast by other people, envy, poisoned food, sorcery (daho), etc. Medical problems caused by outside influences were reported by a wide variety of studies [eg 22-ri-24]. The Western concept of "psychosomatic disorders" probably best describes these illnesses. |

There are thousands of natural remedies promoted for all types of illnesses from allergies to high cholesterol to diabetes to cancer. When it comes to illnesses, maladies and conditions, whether subtle or acute, it is critical that you approach them from a position of strength. Do your research. Find a good health food store with knowledgeable staff. Look for a good herbalist and nutritionist. And above all, as recommended in chapter two, find a physician that you trust, who practices integrative medicine. |

The Western concept of "psychosomatic disorders" probably best describes these illnesses.
Fifty-nine applications fell into the "magical" category, with 39 plant species named to treat these disorders. Mal aire (18 applications), susto (14), and dano (9) were the most common magical illnesses encountered. Treatment in many cases involved the participation of the patient in a cleansing ceremony (limpia). This could either be a relatively simple spraying with perfumes and holy water, or an all-night ceremony involving the healer's curing altar (mesa). |

INDICATIONS AND USAGE
In the middle ages, the drug was used for various illnesses of the respiratory tract, in the form of so-called pectoral teas and as a syrup for severe coughs. Because of its similarity to maiden hair, the drug was used to treat a lack of hair growth and to promote dark hair color.
It is still taken as an infusion in Spain, Belgium and the Canary Islands to treat bronchitis, coughs and whooping cough, and also for painful and excessive menstruation. Efficacy has not been proven. |
| Where large skin injuries or acute skin illnesses, severe feverish or infectious diseases, cardiac insufficiency or hypertonia are present, entire-body baths with the addition of the volatile oil or of extracts from the drug should be carried out only following consultation with a doctor.
DOSAGE

| The study authors also recommend that the FDA establish and maintain a list of current black-box warning medications, as well as illnesses and conditions that may be adversely affected by these drugs.
Another suggestion is for the pharmacist to give the patient the literature that is in the black-box warning before they take the medication, says Dr. B. Jay Brooks, Jr., chairman of hematol-ogy/oncology at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. "That would force another level of safety to be added," he says.

| Can treating depression reduce the risk for heart attack, stroke and other related illnesses? The evidence isn't as strong as we'd like, but some research does suggest that this is true. A recent study of 1,834 patients who had had a heart attack and were depressed found that the risk of death or a second heart attack was approximately 40% lower in the patients who were prescribed an antidepressant.
Among stroke patients, one study conducted in Denmark showed that those who did not take an antidepressant were two to three times more likely to have another stroke within the next year. |
