Michael Holick, author of "The UV advantage" and one of the world's most respected authorities on vitamin D and the health benefits of natural sunlight. His work can be found at www.UVadvantage.com. Be sure to print out the vitamin D myths, facts and statistics page summarizing the key points of this interview. Adams: Let me shift gears here and ask you about the controversy side of this. Sadly, I think your book has been attacked with kind of a surprising degree of ferocity. What has happened to you since publishing this book and taking this stand on being a proponent of sun exposure? Dr.
Adams: And it is widespread, wherever I go and talk to people, to groups, I inevitably mention sunlight and vitamin D, and I have not run into a single person yet that is aware of the health benefits of ultraviolet radiation. Not a single one. Dr. Holick: I'm not at all surprised. Like I said, the problem was that over the past 20 years ago the dermatologists have basically been in control of the media regarding the role of sunlight in health. And all they've looked at is the negative effect.

Here, I'd like to focus on the substantial health benefits of aloe vera to let you see just why I'm so excited about the medicinal applications of this miracle plant. Health benefits of aloe vera gel What I'm about to offer here are my own opinion statements about aloe vera's healing benefits. It's interesting that if I were selling aloe vera myself, I could never make these true statements because the FDA would seize my inventory and shut me down for "selling unapproved drugs.

The FDA has attacked and threatened cherry growers for posting scientifically-validated information about the health benefits of cherries on their websites.

It is defined "as a food or parts of food that provide medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease." Subsequently, several other terms (medical food, functional food, and nutritional supplements) were used. A nutraceutical is any nontoxic food extract supplement that has scientifically proven health benefits for both the treatment and prevention of disease (Dillard and German, 2000).

You Don't Have to be Afraid of Cancer Anymore

Plant extract dietary supplements offer health benefits that simply cannot be achieved with foods. While pills do not replace food, food is not always superior to botanical extracts. Cruciferous vegetables and cancer In his treatise on medicine, Cato the Elder (234-149 BC), wrote: "If a cancerous ulcer appears upon the breasts, apply a crushed cabbage leaf and it will make it well." Crushing a cabbage leaf converts it into a potent anti-cancer molecule called indole-3 carbinol.
This may help explain why some fermented foods exhibit health benefits. Dietary supplements are often devalued or belittled while fresh foods are widely promoted. In some instances, herbal extracts are unfairly characterized as potentially toxic. Devotees of dietary supplements often believe pharmaceutical companies may be behind these anti-supplement sentiments. But in fact, as revealed in this report, it is often food companies that exert their influence over researchers and public health authorities to continually disparage dietary supplements.
European J Clinical Nutrition 58:955-65, 2004] Only olive oils with very a high polyphenol content are likely to produce health benefits. [European Journal Nutrition 43:140-7, 2004] While high quality, extra virgin olive oils may contain between 100 and 300 meg of polyphenols per liter of oil, the concentration of these same polyphenols is 300 to 500 times higher in olive water. The olive water can then be dehydrated into a polyphe-nol-rich powder.
Instead of saying that tobacco use overcomes some of the health benefits derived from eating fresh fruits and vegetables and advising men to stop smoking, the study advised men to stop taking dietary supplements. There was no major criticism of the study from public or private health authorities. Physicians all bought into the story. Only health reporter Jack Challem reported that beta carotene supplements create no appreciable risk of lung cancer when people smoke less than 20 cigarettes daily and drink little or no hard alcohol.

If you're growing your own okra, and eating it raw right off the plant, as I do, for example, you're going to experience a lot of health benefits from those live okra pods. But if you're growing your own berries, such as blueberries, you can see even greater health benefits. Research has shown blueberries are even more effective at lowering LDL cholesterol levels than statin drugs. Again, this is something you don't hear very much from doctors, or certainly from the pharmaceutical industry, but it's been proven true -- blueberries are better than statin drugs.

Along with trials evaluating the health benefits of available cancer screening modalities," the authors conclude, "investigations into potential undesirable consequences of cancer screening are also warranted."31 Iatrogenesis is an issue. It is a mistake to assume the safety of a procedure, especially if it is even minimally invasive.32 Any and all screening that uses radiation increases the patient's risk of cancer.33 The 1996 Task Force admits that radiation probably contributed to "a small number" of new cases of cancer.

Two of these isoflavones, genistein and daidzein, act as both antioxidants and estrogens that when consumed in foods may help contribute to reducing the risk of coronary heart disease as well as protecting against breast or prostate cancer as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.
Tomatoes, a featured actor of the health-promoting Mediterranean diet, have demonstrated health benefits, particularly in relation to certain types of cancers as well as heart disease. For those reasons alone these SuperFoods would be critical additions to anyone's diet. Given all these positive attributes, and the fact that these four foods are all widely available and delicious, it's easy to see why anyone would be eager to incorporate them into his or her regular diet.
The health benefits of nonfat or low-fat yogurt, our dairy SuperFood, are considerable. Yogurt has been favorably associated with helping to reduce the risk of the following conditions: certain cancers, allergies, lactose intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, certain kinds of ulcers, diarrhea, and vaginal and urinary tract infections. Obviously, making nonfat or low-fat yogurt a regular part of your diet is a smart decision. But there's even more reason for people trying to lose weight to include yogurt in their diet.
And of course the friendly bacteria, absent in milk, play a role in yogurt's health benefits, particularly those related to healthy digestion. But over and above the other benefits of yogurt, there is now some exciting evidence that people who have a rich supply of calcium in their diets are less likely to gain weight. There's still more research to be done on this subject but one study showed that women with the highest calcium intakes had the lowest risk of obesity and the slowest weight gain as they aged.

What did traditional Japanese culture offer that might account for these health benefits? Marmot's answer was: a close-knit community, that is, a community that provided its members with a great deal of stress-reducing emotional and social support. If Marmot was right, it began to look as if the Japanese lived longer than any other group on the planet not just because they ate a healthy diet but because they, perhaps more systematically than other countries, had developed a culture that had learned to exploit the power of healing ties.

This compound—a member of the cat-echin family—has multiple health benefits, but one of them is that it appears to increase metabolism. Some researchers have theorized that EGCG blocks the action of an enzyme that breaks down noradrenaline; noradrenaline stimulates many metabolic functions including heart rate and the release of energy from fat, so by allowing more of it to stick around, EGCG may actually "boost" your metabolism. And green tea contains a bit of caffeine, which may work synergistically to help get the job done. In one study, done by Abdul Dulloo, Ph.D.
Most of the health benefits of these oils can be attributed to the GLA content. However, the research on evening primrose and PMS has been mixed. Though some studies have shown it to be beneficial for PMS, many have not, though that may be because a great deal of the research used a preparation that contained only 40 mg of GLA. The average 1,000 mg dose of evening primrose oil contains about 100 mg of GLA. My "cocktail" would provide at least 200 mg (if not more) of GLA a day. It may also be true that GLA works best in combination with B6 and magnesium and is not quite as effective on its own.
Apples are a significant source of quercetin, which has quite a resume of health benefits. Quercetin—which was called "the most important flavonoid" by the peer-reviewed journal Nutrition in Cancer—is highly antiinflammatory, making it very useful in helping to calm the symptoms of asthma (and allergies). It's found in onions, apples, berries, tea, red wine, and supplements. In one study published in 2002 in the American Journal of Clinical Michael Murray, N.D., has suggested that because quercetin isn't very soluble in water, it should be taken with bromelain to improve its absorption.
High-quality fish oil supplements are an excellent way to get the many health benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids (see page 299). Other ingredients you may see on the ingredients list in a glucosamine-chondroitin formula may include sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa), grape seed extract, boswellia, and turmeric, all of which have varying degrees of anti-inflammatory action. Exercise for Arthritis You may feel like exercise is out of the question if you have arthritis. Not so.
Krill oil is increasingly being researched for its health benefits (see below), and one of the nicest of those benefits is the effect krill oil has on premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In a double-blind, randomized clinical trial, seventy patients diagnosed with PMS (by the standards of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition, revised) were treated for three months with either krill oil or plain old omega-3 fish oil. The krill oil group had a statistically significant improvement in dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation) as well as in the emotional symptoms of PMS.

Dietary supplements that provide standardized extracts of curcumin are required for any reliable health benefits. Somewhere between 1,500 and 3,600 mg of curcumin per day (only about 2% of turmeric is curcumin) is considered a typical oral dosage. For treatment of tissue in the liver and gastric tract, 3,600 mg has been determined to be an effective oral dose. [Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers Prevention 14: 120-25, 2005] Consumption of other antioxidants, such as vitamin C, N-acetyl cysteine and glutathione, potentiate curcumin.

Strand: I mean, [there are] well-documented health benefits for taking supplements and health benefits that we know of from exercising and eating a healthy diet. If people would just do that, then they wouldn’t have to see me that much. We are starting to see about six or seven types of causes of death in the country, outside of prescription medication, which are really closely tied to our lifestyle. People need to know that heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke -- I mean the list goes on and on -- are really closely related and can be prevented by a healthier lifestyle.

These three classes of phytoestrogens, individually or in combination, are most likely the primary types of plant estrogens that deliver health benefits since other components are not provided in plant food diets in high amounts. Researchers point to numerous population studies which suggest that diets rich in phytoestrogens, particularly soy and unrefined grain products, may be associated with low risk of some cancers, especially sex-hormone related breast and prostate tumors.
