Exercise, illness, injury or infection use up glutamine. As much as 15 gm of glutamine a day has been recommended for healing a leaky gut.
NAG (N-Acetyl-Glucosamine) - glutamine is also the precursor molecule for glucosamine production in the body. Glucosamine is essential for making mucin, the protective layer in the intestinal wall. Therefore, NAG is an important adjunctive nutrient in supporting the intestinal lining.
Butyric Acid - This is a naturally-occurring short-chain fatty acid found in butter but also made within your intestine. |

One is glutamine. Be sure not to confuse it with glutamic acid. If you take glutamine with vitamin B6 on an empty stomach—and it's best to take it on an empty stomach—along with thiamine and vitamin B6, it will affect the brain.
Magnesium is also important in brain detoxification; I've yet to see a person who drinks regularly, even beer, who is not deficient in magnesium. I also recommend pantothenic acid, which is vitamin B5, and vitamin C, which should be taken with quercetin, the bioflavonoid. The flavonoids are very powerful oxidants and healing agents. |

Patients receiving active treatment (n=7) were given 30 g of oral glutamine daily for 28 days at the start of radiochemotherapy. Placebo-treated patients (n=6) received a standard amino acid solution. All patient received 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin plus mediastinal irradiation. Blood chemistries, lymphocyte counts, and gut barrier functions were completed before treatment and on days 7, 14, and 28. glutamine prevented a reduction in lymphocyte count on day 7 (p<0.05) but there were no differences between groups on days 14 and 28. |

In fact, this may be how glutamine aids in intestinal healing.6"1 This provides us with an alternative to glutamine for gut healing, since glutamine increases glutamate levels in tissues and can worsen excitotoxicity. In addition, PPARs prevent hypertension and reduce inflammation, the mechanism of the Metabolic Syndrome.
What this means is that DHA is a powerful and extremely safe way to enhance PPARs and so reduce the risk of the Metabolic Syndrome and its complications. |

Glutamine's usefulness as a craving buster was first discovered when it was shown that about 12 grams of glutamine curbed alcohol cravings. Its effect on sugar cravings was acknowledged by a research director at the National Institute of Health as far back as 1986. Atkins routinely used it with his patients to combat the compulsion to eat sugar. Dr. Ron Rosedale explains that glutamine acts as a brain fuel, so it can help elim-

For An Upset Stomach Or Ulcer
Juice:
1/2 head of green cabbage
2 ribs of celery 2 apples
Cabbage is rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C, sulfur, selenium and especially the amino acid glutamine. Studies done by Dr. Garnet Cheney, who at one time headed the Cancer Division of Stanford Medical School, revealed the value of glutamine in healing ulcers. Dr. Cheney administered 1 quart (1 liter) of cabbage/celery/carrot juice a day to 65 ulcer sufferers. Within 3 weeks 63 of the patients were healed and 2 retained only minimal symptoms. |

Resuscitating the gut with key nutrients including glutamine (25 grams) and N-acetyl-cysteine (600 milligrams) restores levels of your own powerful antioxidant glutathione and rebuilds the gut's resilience to the stresses of life, including infection and inflammation. Eating extra whole grains and beans helps too.
YOU Tip: Repopulate. Not the world, but your gut. Lactic acid-producing bacteria can be taken as oral supplements to help repopulate your gut with the good kinds of bacteria. (These bacteria are short lived, so you have to re-dose often. |

One of the key reasons why the biological value of whey protein is so high is that it has the highest concentrations of glutamine and branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) found in nature. These amino acids are critical to cellular health, muscle growth, and protein synthesis.
Although the most popular use of whey protein is by body builders and athletes looking to increase their protein intake, whey protein is also used to support recovery from surgery, prevent the "wasting syndrome" of AIDS, and offset some of the negative effects of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. |

Try taking 1,500 mg daily of glutamine to encourage a healthy intestinal lining. It is also advisable to take a vitamin D3 supplement (cholecalciferol in the amounts of 400-1,000 IU daily). Monitor your vitamin D3 levels, and have bone density scans if applicable. A supplement with calcium, vitamin D3, and vitamin K2 (such as Jarrow Formulas Bone Up™) is advised for bone health. Take 1-2 enzyme lactase tablets before each meal that contains lactose. |
| Nicotinamide (a form of vitamin B3) taken at 2-4 g a day may help protect against bacterial endotoxin, which causes septic shock. glutamine added to parenteral nutrition (nutrients given through the veins when someone cannot take oral nutrition) may protect the intestines and prevent complications from septic shock. If a dose can be tolerated, take 20-30 mg in divided doses. Consult a naturopathic physician about parenteral administration.

The composition of valerian includes sesquiterpenes of the volatile oil (including valeric acid), iridoids (valepotriates), alkaloids, furanofuran lig-nans, and free amino acids such as y-aminobutyric acid (GABA), tyrosine, arginine, and glutamine. Valerian administered to animals shows sedative effects.
Valerian is often combined with passionflower and St.-John's-wort for treating anxiety or sleeplessness. A number of studies in humans have shown that it significantly decreases the time it takes to fall asleep and improves sleep quality when compared to a placebo. |

However, Mathews-Larson does strongly recommend three nutrients for just about everyone: glutamine, for its ability to help with cravings; chromium
(see page 46) for its ability to help with controlling blood sugar and hypoglycemia; and the amino acid taurine (see page 39).
"Everyone is low in taurine," she told me, a statement I tend to agree with. "Without taurine, they can't absorb their magnesium, or most other minerals." She recommends 2,000 to 4,000 mg a day. |

For brain function, the most important ones are tryptophan, tyrosine, GABA, glutamine, and taurine. They are turned into neurotransmitters with the help of cofactors, or chemical helpers: vitamins B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid (folate), B12 (cyanoco-balamin), and C; and the minerals zinc and magnesium. In addition, you need the essential fatty acids that make up about 60 percent of each brain cell. All of these can be supplemented as you'll see later in this chapter.
Then there's glucose required for fuel. |

Green tea contains several amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) including aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, serine, glutamine, tyrosine, threonine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, lysine, arginine, histidine, tryptophan, aspargine, and proline. Besides these common amino acids, green tea contains another amino acid that is unique to it: theanine. Theanine constitutes about half of the total amino acid levels in green tea, and its presence is said to correlate with tea quality. |

While glutamine is the main fuel for the small bowel, the short-chained fatty acids N-butyrate, proprionate, and acetate are the colon's main fuel. Combining N-butyrate and vitamin E succinate has been shown to reduce colon cancer rates dramatically, as well as to improve colon function.
A good source of N-butyrate is oat bran and as a pure supplement called ButyrAid (www.advantagenutrition.com). |

In addition to acting as a antioxidant, glutamine has been shown to:
• strengthen immunity
• cut illness short
• aid in recovery from illness
• rejuvenate muscles weakened by stress and illness
Aging itself is a form of stress—a stress we all inevitably encounter. This makes glutamine supplementation even more critical with age. |

Glutamine
The amino acid glutamine is the principal fuel for the small intestine enterocytes. It is the most abundant amino acid in the bloodstream and is considered to be a "conditionally essential" amino acid.7 glutamine is a tri-peptide (glutamic acid, glycine, and cysteine). This potent intracellular antioxidant has glu-tathione-enhancing effects, which are necessary for liver detoxification.8 glutamine also serves as a precursor molecule for glucosamine synthesis, which is essential for mucin synthesis (the protective mucus layer in the gut).
