Monsanto had hired a local farmer to grow the Le Broc test plot in hopes of gaining approval for commercial cultivation in France, the first step toward gaining the big-ticket goal of approval for all of Europe. For Monsanto, it has been a tumultuous road.
Three years earlier, in meetings across the French countryside, a grassroots farmers' movement had taken form, expressing alarm at what farmers felt was the potential for genetically modified crops, to alter the landscape that they and their predecessors had nurtured over centuries. |

Most of us have a caloric "set point" of sorts, a level of calories we can consume each day without gaining weight. We tend to gain weight by eating just slightly beyond the caloric set point week after week. For most of us, the solution is to eat enough so that we're no longer hungry, but not so much that we're full. Wansink asserts that we can
Okinawans, like this 88-year-old fisherman, often remind themselves not to overeat. eat about 20 percent more or 20 percent less without really being aware of it. And that 20 percent swing is the difference between losing weight and gaining it. |

Those recovering from physical, sexual, or emotional abuse may find this expressive technique especially helpful for gaining a sense of ease with their own bodies.
Not everyone is ballroom material of course—some of us feel like we have two left feet, but there are still options for gaining the benefit of dance or movement as a form of expressive release. When nobody's watching, put on some music and give yourself permission to move in whatever way you feel like moving. |

Once the drug companies have developed a "new" drug, they patent it and begin clinical trials in the hopes of gaining FDA approval for its use. In order to get approval, they must perform two multicenter randomized placebo, or sugar-pill-controlled, studies demonstrating that their drug is better than nothing. This means that patients get randomly assigned to either the drug or placebo for, say, three months, and neither the doctors nor the patients know what they are on. |

Humans who follow a raw and living food diet often have trouble gaining weight. Why? Because the micronutrients and the bulk of plant fiber activate the ultimate satiation hormones produced by cells in your lower digestive tract. That's right, these plant compounds activate the ultimate "I'm not hungry" hormone switch. This switch can stop a rampaging teenager at an all-you-can-eat buffet.
In the Teardown phase, you learned that the more you consumed animal products from animals that ate green things, the healthier you'd get. |
| Whenever one of my Club members is stuck on a plateau or even gaining weight, I have the person provide a food diary for two weeks, literally writing down everything that goes into his or her mouth. Several foods with hidden sugars or sweet tastes have consistently reared their ugly heads as culprits. Check out "The Dirty Dozen" (see sidebar, opposite) to see if any apply to you. If you cannot budge from a plateau after two weeks and are not being hampered by any of the Dirty Dozen, you're eating too much protein. Halve your portions and weight loss should resume. |
| WHAT IF YOU'RE gaining WEIGHT?
When you started the Teardown phase of Diet Evolution, your main purpose was to shut down the "Store Fat for Winter" genetic program by metaphorically removing the "old paint." As you shed old cells, you lay the groundwork for rebuilding your body with modern materials in the form of new cells. But don't be deceived. The "Store Fat" program is always loaded into your genetic computer. That's why you will avoid all "beige" and "white" foods and consume "brown" food in extreme moderation, if at all, in Phase 1. |
| You can also continue to eat your modest amounts of fruit and "brown" foods if you have added them back, so long as you are not gaining weight. If you are beginning to think that I want you to plateau, you're right. In fact, plateauing is one real cornerstone of the program. If your first plateau happens in the first four weeks of the Teardown phase, keep doing what you're doing. If it hits in the fifth or sixth week, remain in this phase until weight loss resumes.
There are two reasons for this strategy. |
| Cheer up; there is a foolproof way to enjoy these calorie-dense foods without gaining weight: you've got to earn them, as you'll learn in Chapter 11. Meanwhile, during the Teardown phase, // it's white, keep it out of sight; if it's beige, behave; if it's brown, slow down.
Tropical Sugar Bomb*
Ripe bananas contain a starch that is rapidly converted to sugar, unlike green bananas or plantains. Cooked plantains, unfortunately, become sugary. Any tropical fruit, including mangos and papayas, has a much higher sugar content than other fruits and, in general, a sweeter taste. |

CONCLUSION
A New Direction in Healing
IN THIS BOOK we have provided an overview of an emerging paradigm in biology and medicine—one that explores and seeks to engage the quantum processes in the body. Bioenergetics as envisioned and practiced by NES is truly an integrative approach to wellness, seeking as it does to validate the reality that we are more than matter, we are beings of energy and information as well. |
| Such wave-dependent theories are gaining wider acceptance in the physics community as it becomes clear that they can explain many of the paradoxes and mysteries of the quantum Standard Model, such as wave-particle duality, nonlocality, and entanglement. In fact, a recent experiment by physicist Shahriar Afshar in part verifies the hypotheses of Wolff and Cramer. This experiment has rocked the world of physics, and its results are extremely controversial, as discussed in the following section.

I have had many patients in their late twenties or early thirties come into my office complaining that they are gaining a significant amount of weight. What bothers them is the fact that their eating habits and activity level have not changed, but they've put on thirty to forty pounds in the past two or three years. Why are they gaming so much? Typically it is because the patient has developed a resistance to insulin. These patients have begun various diet programs but were not able to lose much weight. |

| Facial acupuncture is gaining popularity, especially among Baby Boomers who want to diminish signs of aging. There are other forces driving demand, too, including consumers who are tired or wary of repeated Botox injections. So, business-savvy acupuncturists are marketing their alternative approach as a holistic solution.
THE PROCEDURE
In facial acupuncture, the practitioner inserts small needles into "pressure points" in the face. According to supporters, this boosts blood flow to the area, producing tighter muscles and a more youthful appearance. |

In Australia a related form of the massage, respiratory mobilisation, is gaining ground.
MOBILISATION MASSAGE AND ASTHMA
Mobilisation massage has been shown to increase the lung and diaphragm function of asthma sufferers, but not everyone can endure the discomfort associated with the shearing action.
Bowen Technique
Tom Bowen was born in Geelong, Victoria and died in 1982. Bowen had little medical training, but like many other people, had discovered the strength of the healing relationship between mind and body. |
| After a period of time, Diane became more assertive and sought counselling, gaining support to help her cope with her difficulties. Diane now suffers fewer asthma attacks, feels stronger in herself and more capable of coping with her husband.
A second example is that of Michelle, a sixteen-year-old girl, who had the very common symptoms of extreme tiredness, irritability, pre-menstrual tension, constipation and asthma with severe wheezing. |
| This is especially so for an asthmatic, because it will take time, perseverance, effort and commitment for you to be successful in gaining relief from your condition.
Health has to be worked on and, like most things in life, good health doesn't come easily.
Just as there are 101 reasons for an asthma attack, there are also 101 ways an asthma attack can be avoided. Many alternative techniques can help you reduce your reliance on orthodox medication, and you should seek out practical help to find the complementary techniques that improve your asthma. |
| As many beginners are unfamiliar with water and are anxious, gaining confidence is an important part of learning to swim enjoyably. A relaxed approach by the instructor reassures the pupil and avoids the possibility of an anxiety-induced attack, which would only defeat the purpose of the exercise.
Once an asthmatic has learned to swim competently, he or she will also have learned the pattern of breathing out long underwater and taking a short breath at the surface between strokes. |

Only today are phytonutrients gaining the recognition they deserve. Even though researchers are actively investigating phytonutrients, some authorities estimate that 99 percent of phytonutrients have yet to be discovered! Fortunately, the phytonutrients in green tea are among those already documented as potent healers.
Because phytonutrients are a formidably large category, scientists divide them into several smaller classes to make them easier to understand. One of these classes is the polyphenols. Polyphenols are present in tea, and in apples, onions, red wine, and many other foods as well. |
| As it becomes increasingly clear that antioxidant enzymes produced in the body and the antioxidant vitamins consumed in the diet cannot completely protect all of the body's cells from oxidative damage, other antioxidants in plants, including the polyphenols found in green tea, are gaining attention. Part of the reason that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables contributes to good health is that these foods contain a .great many unique antioxidants in addition to the variety of vitamins, minerals, and fiber they provide. |

The body is gaining vitality and immunity as it cleans and rebuilds itself.
Complete healing takes time. The body cannot restore everything simultaneously. Some parts, some organs, some muscles are usually more deteriorated than others. We must be prepared for reactions and upsets on the road back to health. If we are doing everything right, these are simply healing corrections. The relapses of illness are natural times of thorough healing when strength and vitality are being rebuilt into our bodies. |

His theory, known as the Barker Hypothesis or the thrifty phenotype hypothesis, has been gaining ground ever since. (Phenotype is the physical expression of your genotype; in other words, if you have one parent with attached earlobes and the other parent with detached earlobes, you will have detached earlobes, because that trait is dominant— detached earlobes would be part of your phenotype. Epigenetic effects influence your phenotype without changing your genotype. |

Obviously, not many people are gaining 50 pounds per year, but a tendency to eat more calories than we need is a problem facing nearly everyone in America as well as every other developed country.
Bit by bit, portion sizes have increased in restaurants, packaged foods, and on our dinner plates. Food companies have long known that people want to get value for their money and simply giving consumers more food is the easiest way to keep people coming back to a restaurant or a food product. | The key to gaining the benefits of these healthy fats is real moderation. All fats contain about 9 calories per gram so none of them should be used liberally. Books promoting fats for weight loss suggest that you can eat any quantity of certain kinds of oils and still lose weight. That's pure foolishness. Striking a balance between the low-fat craze and overzeal-ous use of healthy oils is the key to finding their true benefits.
Good Fats Versus Bad Fats
One of the key determinants of whether a fat is good or bad is its effect on cellular membranes and, as a result, the action of insulin. |
| The key to being able to consume these foods regularly without gaining weight primarily depends on first eating substantial amounts of low caloric-density, volumetric foods to reduce appetite and consistently promote satiety. In this way, you will be able to maintain careful portion control when eating high caloric-density foods and not have to depend on willpower when your appetite is in overdrive.
For example, some of our most successful weight-loss participants have learned to limit themselves to a tiny square of chocolate two or three times per week rather than avoid it altogether. |

Diana, miraculously aware of the flight and death, could now rest appeased.30

The process of gaining an intellectual understanding brought a false illusion of healing. I frequently said to myself, "Now that I have an intellectual (intelligent) understanding of what the problems are within me, I will be cured. I had this belief over and over, but it never did bring about true healing. Instead, it brought about a temporary false sense of confidence that "now I've got the problem nailed down, I will be okay."
The Jungian approach helped only temporarily and then, only slightly. However, each time I came to understand the problem, I truly thought that I would be cured. |
| What Neurosis, and Reliving, Do to the Brain
As a result of four separate brainwave studies we discovered a brain system with better balanced right and left hemispheres after one year of Primal Therapy. gaining access to the deepest levels of brain function allows us to see for the first time in history what resides on each level, and its purpose in the psychic economy. We can see exactly what kind of birth the person underwent and what the trauma was. We can see whether there was touch and holding immediately following birth or not. We don't have to guess or theorize. |
